Re: Warren’s Conversion

Do you have a bolt that fits it?

Re: Warren’s Conversion

The part definitely came from the Subie. I’m still driving the Vanagon (drove it to Buses by the Bridge in Lake Havasu).?

Here’s the alternator bracket. It’s very similar to the other. I’m still searching for the other bracket’s home.?

Looks like a fuel or vacuum line mounting tab ? I looked at mine and don’t have that one anywhere, assuming you mean subie part not vanagon part?

Re: Warren’s Conversion

Thank you Andy. ?Although they look quite similar, I actually have the alternator bolt bracket. ?So I’m still stumped. ?I’ve looked at many of the photos I took when disassembling it, but I’m at a loss. ?

Re: Warren’s Conversion

The lower bolt ?had red thread locker on it when I pulled it out so I used red again when I reinstalled it. All others got blue.?

Re: Warren’s Conversion

I bought the plug wires a the Subaru dealer. I hope they work okay. They were a bit shorter than the old ones on the engine. They all went on okay but the number 3 was almost too short.?

Re: Warren’s Conversion

Shiney! That lower PS pump bracket bolt stripped out on me after taking the pump off a few times. I don't think they need Loctite. Are those OE Packard plug wires? I found the NGK blue wires worked better than stock IMO.

Re: Warren’s Conversion

I used a black one with the steel mesh. It works alright.

Got my power steering pump and bracket installed this evening.

Re: Warren’s Conversion

My engine is from an automatic but I’m installing it in a manual transmission Vanagon. ?Just by chance I ordered the kit with the oil pump that would accept the timing belt guard, which I needed. ?I found the guard online (OEM) and installed it. ?Since it mounts in a curved configuration it was difficult to establish the gap. ?So I used some thin cardboard bits and pieces from a component box to equal 1.5mm and used those stacked up as a spacer.

I watched the video after I said that so I think you were correct in hind sight at least according to him. I would never get the aftermarket tensioner myself, but the rest of the pulleys are indeed the same as oem.?

I wasn’t aware there are so many types of water pumps, there are also different oil pumps as some don’t have the mounting points for the timing belt ‘guard’ that’s only on manual cars.?

So many things to learn… thanks for the link?

Thank you John. I probably misspoke. I think the video mentioned that the cogged pulley was the most common “pulley” to fail. But of course, when it fails it will likely ruin the timing belt as well.?

Re: Warren’s Conversion

Here’s a link to a good video on the value of an oil catch can. My engine was really dirty inside and out and the intake manifold was filled with carbon-like nastiness so I’m hoping the oil catch can will help keep things cleaner.?

With all due respect the most common failure would be the belt itself, followed by the tensioner, followed by the cogged pulley. And yes why green ? I consider Japan made Aisin oem in my head. At least quality equivalent or like you said the exact same. Water pump for example, seems to be made by them and is top quality. Another item Subaru mechanics will tell you never fails, but never is a long time?

John?

He is asking about the green one in this photo. It is Aisin, which makes the components for Subaru, Toyota, and others. I’m not sure about why it is green?? But I have read (or saw a video) that that toothed pulley is the most common failure point in the timing system on SOHC Subaru engines).?

Re: Warren’s Conversion

I am definitely going to include one of those Evil Energy oil catch cans when I install my engine. Interestingly, on Amazon someone mentions that some of the black ones are inferior (cannot use the steel wool) but that the red one is a better build quality. I don’t have personal experience with one but I’ll order the red one just in case.?

Re: Warren’s Conversion

Mrsubaru1387 on YouTube only uses the Aisin kit because all the components are OEM. As a former Subaru tech he seems to know what he’s doing. ?Now he’s a YouTube guy with 420,000 subscribers. And he’s produced 1,100 videos. I turn to his channel often.?
