Re: Picking an A/C compressor for the '90 2.2 in my '90 vanagon

Yes, it came with the donor motor; who the heck knows how many hours on it.? I had screwed up my upfront condenser by twiddling around, so a donor was supplied for that too, $100.? In hindsight, should have gone for the parallel condenser....better performance...everybody including GoWesty sells them.

Re: Picking an A/C compressor for the '90 2.2 in my '90 vanagon

Do I need one from the early years? Could I get a newer model year compressor/ hoses and have the compressor fit in the mount on the engine I have?
Unless I can see a junk yard compressor work I'm going to plan on buying a new one that the junkyard hoses will fit on.?

Re: Picking an A/C compressor for the '90 2.2 in my '90 vanagon

I would suggest giving outfront motorsports a call.? They can supply a Bracket w/ Adjuster and everything, plus a new A/C pump that takes the typical 0-ring based fittings (not supplied but any A/C repair place should have on hand)
?
there is so many different combinations of brackets and pumps and fittings on Subaru's it's almost not funny.? then add in the fact if you go used, the pump itself may not be good, or will not last long because the system had been open to the environment for too long.

Hey gang.? I found another, much older, listing of subaruvanagon related vendors in our site that had been brought along with our conversion from yahoo to groups.io.
?
Favor to ask you all.? I went through the listing and eliminated about 12 shops that I knew were not in business and did lookups on a few more to get rid of them when Yelp told me they were closed.
Could you take a look at the list below and let me know if you know whether theyre still open and providing subaruvanagon related services?
?
Please reply directly to me.....this is forum housekeeping and not helpful to our members who are looking for help with their conversions.

Thanks,

Picking an A/C compressor for the '90 2.2 in my '90 vanagon

I have a 1990 Vanagon with a 1990 (I think) Subaru 2.2 (I bought it converted).
I'm thinking about hooking up the A/C system and it does not have a compressor on the engine. I need hoses/fittings for the compressor that I don't have so I figured a wrecking yard for those (hoses) and then a new Subaru compressor.
?
My question... Does it matter what year "compressor with hoses still attached" I pick? Is a better year/model better than others? Is there something to avoid?
?
Thanks.

Re: OBD II, OBD I and Subaru Legacy 2.2L engine diagnostics

Hi Terry -
?
The ECU is OBD1 and is from the Subaru donor motor. Not sure where your ECU was installed to but locate it and then the 2 green connectors near it. Plug them in to each other then turn the ignition to ON position and your check engine light will start blinking out the codes if any.
?
First digit in the code is a long flash and the second digit is a short flash. Could be the other way around.
?
Count the flashes and jot them down then refer to the following link for the code meaning.
?
?
Good luck

Re: OBD II, OBD I and Subaru Legacy 2.2L engine diagnostics

Welcome aboard!
If you have a smog legal in California conversion, then you likely have a 2.2 Subaru.
You should look under your bench seat and see if the computer is there, it might have a label on it that will help.
You will have the Subaru ECU. It's very motor-specific, so you'll never see a vanagon ECU with another engine.

Most important question: Do you have a check engine light on the dash?
If Yes, Here is how to check the codes:
https://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/48690-getting-codes-from-ej22/
?
If no CEL, see:
(which is an old thread of me adding it to my van)

Re: New motor

?
This is different than a compression test, which it sounds like you did and got 20 psi in that one cylinder. A leak down test helps pinpoint what is actually wrong with the engine that gives you low compression.
It can help you determine which of the following problems. You are actually facing:
*bad intake valve
*bad exhaust valve
*bad head gasket
*bad rings
* Hole in your piston (why I suggested a scope)
?
I know it is super frustrating to deal with problems like this, but a little bit more investigation will help you spend money in a smart way and get your van back on the road.

From amazon a leak down tester is as low as $30 and will tell you a lot about what is actually going on with your motor.

A borescope is cheap too!

Also, you have to have neighbors/friends/buddys that might have these!
For under $100 you can know exactly what that motor needs.

Hi Terry. ?Just to exercise my limited authority I ask folks to let everyone know what year Vanagon they have and what year/model Suby engine they have installed. ?Helps with the troubleshooting.

That said, if your Subaru engine is pre-1996 you are OBD1. ?Those ECUs codes can be read quite a bit differently than OBD2.

Here’s a page from my site giving you a rundown on how to read codes. ?Hopefully the installing party put an LED inline to allow you to read the codes but all is not lost if they didn’t. ?You just need to put a multimeter on the appropriate line out of the ECU. ?Also….somewhere in my faulty memory I seem to remember that some older ECU’s had an LED inside the ecu but again, take that with a grain of salt.

And here’s a page showing what the codes themselves mean….

Re: SubaruVanagon Parts/Servicing/Installers Database Now Available

Hello,

Having a list like that is a good thing.

There should be something for user feedback. Westy-World (Chico, California) started my conversion in October 2023, and I do not have a delivery date. I don't get status reports unless I make a fuss, and even then it takes a while.
