FS: Lantern Tool Posts and Armstrong/Williams Tool Holders
Lot of two tool posts and five tools. Smaller tool post measures 7/16" in width. Larger toolpost measures 1/2" in width. The five tool holders are Armstrong, Walton, not marked, Armstrong and Williams. The small Armstrong appears to have a broken cutter. The carbide cutter is marked KT-J4071-32 I can message higher resolution pictures if you need to see more details. The entire lot is $75, which includes flat rate priority mail to the lower 48 states. Message me an offer if my pricing seems to be out of range. - Stan

FS: Two Lathe Chucks 1-7/8 x 8tpi - early 10L or 13" 6
Two lathe chucks were included with my recent lathe purchase that don't actually fit my (1968) 10L. They are both 1-7/8 x 8tpi. From my limited research, it appears that this is an uncommon size used on early SB 10L and 13" lathes. Both chucks are by DE Whiton, and neither has a chuck key. They need a good cleaning, but nothing appears broken on either. 5" 3 jaw - the 3 jaw requires a square socket, which is uncommon in my experience (see picture). $125, includes flat rate priority shipping to the lower 48. The 4 jaw is a 6". $125, includes flat rate priority mail shipping to the lower 48. Message me for higher resolution pictures. If my price seems out of range, feel free to email offers or offer constructive feedback. I need a 10L thread dial, so a trade could be possible. If you live in Texas, then a local pickup in Central or North Texas is also possible.

FS: 10" 4 jaw Chuck -2-1/4 x 8tpi 2
Update on 8-13-24: SOLD This was included in a recent lathe purchase, but is too large for my 10L. It would probably be a good fit for a SB 13", which I think is also 2-1/4 x 8tpi. No marking except for Kalamazoo. It looks like it's a Buck casting from the backside, but again, no Mfg marking that I found with limited cleaning. No chuck key. Email me for high resolution pictures. $175 + shipping, but let me know if that seems out of range. Hopefully, I can squeeze it into a priority mail flat rate box for shipping.

StanF SB Heavy 10 Lathe 5
I purchased a new SB 10L lathe yesterday...some history...I've had quite a bit of lathe turnover over the past 25-30 years: 1st: Atlas-Craftsman 12" (~1997) - worked well. Good starter lathe. But the small spindle hole was problematic at the time. 2nd: Logan 11" (~1998-2005) - awesome, tight lathe with 5c collet closer. I have regretted selling it for almost 20 years no lathe from ~2006-2017 - just didn't have the space, need, etc 3rd: Import 9x20 (2017-2024) - It was bought used and was really inexpensive, and it made a few parts. Small footprint and easy to move. Not a joy to use by any means. Did I mention that it was really inexpensive? 4th: 1945 South Bend 9A (2024) - it was disassembled and not running when purchased (it was cheap!) I did a full disassembly and paint. Before: After many hours of work! (I know the mobile base isn't ideal for a lathe, but it works for me! And is great for storing tooling) It's amazing how much smoother and better running a 79 year old SB lathe was compared to the almost new import 9x20. Sadly, I'll probably end up selling my 9A. 5th: (the point of this post!) Purchased yesterday...my 1968 Heavy 10...hopefully, this will kill the regret that I still feel after selling the Logan 11". It came with a bunch of tooling - not all of it fits the 10L. So, I'll sell off the misfits, so I can buy the missing/broken 10L parts that I need. I'm a big fan of 5C collets, and was lucky to get a working setup: Only half of these will work with my 10L: Missing bit...thread dial - the 3d print idea is interesting - thanks Rogan. Sadly, I'm also missing the Steady Rest: Broken 5C collet rack bracket - I can probably repair it. Or find a replacement. Or maybe not even install it - I'm not sure that it is a useful accessory. As far as future plans...I'll probably end up doing a full disassembly, felts, lube and paint. Here's the tailstock to give you an indication of some of the paint condition:

VFD location 9
Esteemed group members, Any suggestions where to put the 3hp VFD for my 14.5" tool room lathe? I'm thinking that attaching it to the wall behind the lathe might be the cleanest install for me instead of figuring out where to mount it on the lathe. Any thoughts? Pros or cons as to where it should be. 220V outlet is surface mounted on the wall near the tailstock end of the lathe. Current plan is to mount the VFD on the wall and near the outlet, run armored cable to the lathe and transition to rigid conduit across the back of the lathe to the junction box where the motor wiring is located. Alternatively, I could mount the VFD to the wall near the headstock end and run surface wiring over to the outlet. Thanks, George H. Meinschein, P.E. Suggestions for quickly setting accurate angles on the compound? 5
I have a 10k (light 10), and I'd like to cut a few machine tapers (e.g. JT33) and I have a keyless chuck I'd like to repair after it's internal taper was messed up by a similarly bad arbor. In any case, I want to cut accurate angles, and I do not have a taper attachment. Tom Lipton has a great video series with a few options, but the best requires using a sine bar that's referencing a surface that's parallel with the compound travel, but the only possible surface on my compound is the machined T-slot for the tool post, and that's (at best) perpendicular (and I have doubts about how accurately it was made wrt the dovetails). Tom's video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krIG_IHLFyA Does anyone here have suggestions for doing this? Some ideas: (A) I could mount a parallel in a tool holder, indicate that to be parallel to the compound travel, *then* mount a sine bar to that reference and indicate the sine bar. That's more work than I'd really like to put in every time I do this, but at least it's non-destructive. (B) I have a mill & surface grinder - I could probably machine a flat on the side of the compound that's parallel with the dovetails. I don't recall how much material there is to remove there, though, and that would probably be on the "front" side, rather than the back (in order to avoid the gib screws), which would make it slightly more difficult to indicate. (C) ??? Maybe there's a casting kit or something for a new compound that has a more functional design? (D) I suppose I could fabricate a new compound, and re-use the screw, nut, and other hardware. (E) Maybe I could place some pin holes in the top of the compound at key locations, then pull the toolpost and set a sine bar + parallel against those... The challenge here I think is ensuring that they are aligned properly, since they're on the opposite side of the casting from the feature I'd need to indicate on the mill (the dovetails?) Anyway, I'd like to see how other folks have solved this. Thanks! --Rogan

FW: Baldor Motor and TECO drive combo for your lathe or other machine 2
To the group: For someone that needs a good variable speed, reversable setup, I am offering a Baldor IDXM7006 inverter duty ? HP motor and TECO Westinghouse L510-101-H1-U Variable Frequency Drive for sale. See attached pictures. The motor is 230/460V 3 phase, frame 56C, “explosion proof”, ball bearing, 1735RPM at 60Hz, made in USA and is used but excellent shape. There are minor scratches and scuffs on the paint, no dings or dents. This was used to run a small pump in a lab. The inverter is 110v input, ? HP, again in excellent condition – I would say it looks new. I do not have the manual, but it is available online from numerous sources on the web. I purchased both of these for my employer, so I know their history of very light use. When they no longer were needed, I was able to save them from the junk pile. I was planning to use the combo in my shop but they have sat for a couple of years, and I need to reclaim some space. I am offering the combo to this group first for a price of $250. I am located in central NJ and would prefer to not have to ship, as the motor weighs 39 lbs, but will ship via UPS if you are willing to pay the actual cost which I think could be around $100 depending on distance. I’ll give first priority to local pickup, but if I get no takers on that in a few days, I will sell to the first person who is willing to pay the shipping. Thanks for looking and very best John
