StanF SB Heavy 10 Lathe
I purchased a new SB 10L lathe yesterday...some history...I've had quite a bit of lathe turnover over the past 25-30 years:
?
1st: Atlas-Craftsman 12" (~1997) - worked well.? Good starter lathe.? But the small spindle hole was problematic at the time.?
?
2nd: Logan 11" (~1998-2005) - awesome, tight lathe with 5c collet closer.? I have regretted selling it for almost 20 years
?
?
no lathe from ~2006-2017 - just didn't have the space, need, etc
?
?
3rd: Import 9x20 (2017-2024) - It was bought used and was really inexpensive, and it made a few parts.? Small footprint and easy to move.? Not a joy to use by any means.? Did I mention that it was really inexpensive?
?
4th: 1945 South Bend 9A (2024) - it was disassembled and not running when purchased (it was cheap!) I did a full disassembly and paint.??
Before:
?
After many hours of work!
(I know the mobile base isn't ideal for a lathe, but it works for me!? And is great for storing tooling) ?It's amazing how much smoother and better running a 79 year old SB lathe was compared to the almost new import 9x20.??Sadly, I'll probably end up selling my 9A.??
?
5th:? (the point of this post!)
Purchased yesterday...my 1968 Heavy 10...hopefully, this will kill the regret that I still feel after selling the Logan 11".??
?
It came with a bunch of tooling - not all of it fits the 10L.? So, I'll sell off the misfits, so I can buy the missing/broken 10L parts that I need.??
I'm a big fan of 5C collets, and was lucky to get a working setup:
?
Only half of these will work with my 10L:
?
Missing bit...thread dial - the 3d print idea is interesting - thanks Rogan.
?
Sadly, I'm also missing the Steady Rest:
?
?
Broken 5C collet rack bracket - I can probably repair it.? Or find a replacement.? Or maybe not even install it - I'm not sure that it is a useful accessory.
?
As far as future plans...I'll probably end up doing a full disassembly, felts, lube and paint.? Here's the tailstock to give you an indication of some of the paint condition:
