Wow! That looks like one heck of a lot of parts. I hope you remember
how it
all goes back together. When I dismantled my QC gearbox, I cleaned
it one
gear-cluster at a time in order to keep things straight. Still had
to do
some sleuthing to put it back together. It's sure going to look
great when
you get it painted.

Are there any places where they used filler for voids in the cast
iron?
Were there any shims under the head stock?
Will you be brushing or spraying?

Yes, keep us posted and good luck.

I totally dismantled my 9" SB and took it to a local engine
rebuild shop
to
have it cleaned.
The use a Caustic Dip tank which is pre heated to about 110 F. All
the
parts
where put in the tank and left overnight. This process will remove
every
oz.
of paint and dirt to a perfect bare metal surface for painting.
See a
picture attached of the tank.

NOTE: If you do this with your lathe DO NOT put the three back
gear cover
pieces in the tank. They are made of aluminum and will devolve.
Also
remove
your brass name plates because the red paint will be gone.

In the first to pics you can see all the parts laid out on the
bench. A
close up shows how clean they are. Total cost was $42.00 to do.

Next I plan to paint the lathe with Armor Rust Paint. I have
picked a dark
green color. Should look nice.

Jim,

Thanks for sharing the pictures with us. Looks like a nice old SB, and yes
I'm sure it could use a thorough cleaning. Let us know what brand/color of
paint you end up using.

All the speeds provided by the pulley combinations and the back-gears ought
to come in handy. What's the bed length on your SB?

I'm looking for a steady rest also, but I think I might try making a steady
and a follower out of aluminum since its easy to machine and I don't have a
mill. Has anybody made steady rest for their 9" SB?

I just got My SB model A back together enough to try out the belt from
McMaster-Carr. The belt seemed real flimsy, but I can stall the motor before
anything slips, and for around $13.00 it can't be beat.

I have changed the title of this group from 9" SB's to include a SB's.
This was due to the requests I have had to include guys who are bigger
than 9" (Or wish they where).

Let welcome them to the group and hope they do not bragg to much about
size.

Also you can also check with any local bearing supply house. They sell

under the name of Felt packing.

Hope this helps.

I did see hard felt (SAE 20S2) on page 3015 of

online catalog. It says its "good for bearing seals, lubrication
wicks and
fluid transfer components." I think I might try a 12" x 12" x 1/8"

for $12.77 if I can't find anything better. Anybody got any

this?

Does anybody know of a source for the thick felt that is used
way-wipers
on
the carriage as well as the felt used as wicks on shafts? I hate
to even
call SBL for a price at this point.

I'm in the process of de-gunking and repairing my SB and I'm
missing a
couple of the way-wipers. One screw was broken off, but
fortunately
there
was enough of a nib sticking out I was able to use a small
nail-set and
a
small hammer to carefully unscrew the broken screw. I'm glad I
didn't
have
to drill and tap!

Felt Wicks

Tom Miller

Paul,
SB is acutally reasonable on the wicks for the shaft and tailstock.
Cost was $3 per foot and a foot is a lot of wick, like would last you
a lifetime. Its a round felt solid rope about 3/16 dia. you cut it
to length and push it into hole then put oil cap back on.

SB Lubricants

Tom Miller

OK latest on my research on oils that match the viscosity etc of SB
rec oils, Types A, B, C and way oil. First the good news/bad news, I
found via a local Shell Oil products dist Vitrea oil, type 22
matching SB Type A, type 32 matching type B and type 68 matching type
C. Unfortuneately it only comes in 55 gal drums. Someone may have a
source for smaller amts, but these Shell Oil products match the SB
specs, too bad they appear to only be available in 55 gal drums.
I did find that MSC, Industrial Supply Co., 1-800-645-7270,
www.mscdirect.com carries 1 gal containers of Velocite no. 10 which
equates to SB Type A as was mentioned in a recent email posting,
price is $10.65/gal. They also have Vectra 2 which matches SB type
C, the most commonly used oil on my 13" lathe for $11.55/gal. Have
not located a source for type B which is used in the quick change
gear box.
