I totally dismantled my 9" SB and took it to a local engine rebuild shop to
have it cleaned.
The use a Caustic Dip tank which is pre heated to about 110 F. All the parts
where put in the tank and left overnight. This process will remove every oz.
of paint and dirt to a perfect bare metal surface for painting. See a
picture attached of the tank.
NOTE: If you do this with your lathe DO NOT put the three back gear cover
pieces in the tank. They are made of aluminum and will devolve. Also remove
your brass name plates because the red paint will be gone.
In the first to pics you can see all the parts laid out on the bench. A
close up shows how clean they are. Total cost was $42.00 to do.
Next I plan to paint the lathe with Armor Rust Paint. I have picked a dark
green color. Should look nice.
I will keep you posted of my progress.
