Trick for Greasing Head and Backgear Shafts on 9" SB Lathe
kestrel@ns.sympatico.ca
If you have tried to grease the Spindle Pulley shaft and Backgear shaft on
your SB, you will find two 1/4" x 20 plugs which you need to remove to fill with grease. There is no grease nipple to attach your grease so it make it very hard to do. I made a grease fitting adapter by drilling a 1/8" hole through a 1/4" x 20 UNC Hex head bolt and silver soldiering a standard grease nipple to the end. If you do not have torches you can drill and tap the grease fitting into the end of the bolt. To use, just remove the grease plugs and screw in your adapter. Pump full of grease and remove. Works Great. See picture of my adapter. Hope this helps. Jim Visit my Genealogy Home Page. Researching: Bennett,Burry,Taylor,White. Other Names: Gibbons,Gibson,Kelly,Randel,Moore. to name a few. |

Wow! That looks like one heck of a lot of parts. I hope you remember how it all goes back together. When I dismantled my QC gearbox, I cleaned it one gear-cluster at a time in order to keep things straight. Still had to do some sleuthing to put it back together. It's sure going to look great when you get it painted. Are there any places where they used filler for voids in the cast iron? Were there any shims under the head stock? Will you be brushing or spraying? Yes, keep us posted and good luck. Paul R. Hvidston Upland, CA ----- Original Message -----

Great I would paint it with Rustolm there industarl stuff they sell.
They mack a paint that is for this kind of stuff.Ho a I can not spell at all.I paint every thing with there red primer. It will stand up very well . I used to be a engine rebuilder and we painted the inside of the engines with the red primer. This is what I would do if I was doing what you are.Brett |

I totally dismantled my 9" SB and took it to a local engine rebuild shop to
have it cleaned. The use a Caustic Dip tank which is pre heated to about 110 F. All the parts where put in the tank and left overnight. This process will remove every oz. of paint and dirt to a perfect bare metal surface for painting. See a picture attached of the tank. NOTE: If you do this with your lathe DO NOT put the three back gear cover pieces in the tank. They are made of aluminum and will devolve. Also remove your brass name plates because the red paint will be gone. In the first to pics you can see all the parts laid out on the bench. A close up shows how clean they are. Total cost was $42.00 to do. Next I plan to paint the lathe with Armor Rust Paint. I have picked a dark green color. Should look nice. I will keep you posted of my progress. Jim,
Thanks for sharing the pictures with us. Looks like a nice old SB, and yes I'm sure it could use a thorough cleaning. Let us know what brand/color of paint you end up using. All the speeds provided by the pulley combinations and the back-gears ought to come in handy. What's the bed length on your SB? I'm looking for a steady rest also, but I think I might try making a steady and a follower out of aluminum since its easy to machine and I don't have a mill. Has anybody made steady rest for their 9" SB? I just got My SB model A back together enough to try out the belt from McMaster-Carr. The belt seemed real flimsy, but I can stall the motor before anything slips, and for around $13.00 it can't be beat. Paul R. Hvidston ACKSYS Engineering Upland, CA |

This is my Model A, 9" Lathe I purchased from Ebay. It cost me $450.00 USD.
Came with 3 Jaw, 4 Jaw, live center, drill chuck. Has Power crossfeed, quick change gearbox and lots of dirt.......... Has optional two speed counter shaft for a total of 12 speeds. All I need now is a Face plate and steady rest. Anyone got a spare ? My plans are to dismantle the lathe and take it to a local engine rebuild shop and have the metal parts put in the engine degreasing tank and then rebuild and paint it back to a like new condition. I will keep you all posted on the progress. Jim Visit my Genealogy Home Page. Researching: Bennett,Burry,Taylor,White. Other Names: Gibbons,Gibson,Kelly,Randel,Moore. to name a few. |
