Re: Insurance and other stuff
Pete, I feel ya! ?We are in Oregon currently building a small (550 sq ft) cottage on my wife's brother's 20 acres. ?My bro-in-law and I are the two main crew, although I must give kudos to Kris, my partner of more than 50 years. She's all in on the construction, fetching tools, nails, schlepping lumber, whatever it takes. ?At 71, 76 and 73 respectively, it's a challenge, but a rewarding one. ?Maybe it's foolish at my age to be hanging out over the gable end about 20' above the ground in order to nail a sub facia in place. ?I guess the many years of sailing and racing where one routinely has to be very physical and stretch one's comfort level have made it somewhat easier at this stage in the journey. ?We will not move here permanently for awhile, still wishing to have a presence in TX. ?But we also understand the heightened risks of living right at the edge of Galveston Bay, so have been trying to find something modest away from the coast. ?And then there's the issue of our beloved Orion, at present on the hard in Toms River, NJ. ?We brought Orion to the Eastern Seaboard in 2017 after sailing her from NJ to TX in 2012 to complete a major refit. ? Since leaving TX, we have led the gypsy life when aboard, usually a week or two every two months in the winter and full summers aboard the last three years. ?The thought of maintaining a boat on the East Coast while living on the West Coast though does not resonate. ?And no way I'm paying $7k to transit the Panama Canal to bring her to the West Coast. ?Beyond that, the best cruising grounds on the left coast are south of the border in Mexico and then Puget Sound and the San Juans and the Canadian coast. The Oregon coast is rugged with nasty inlets and shallow bays. ?Not user friendly. But wait! ?If we can find a reasonable housing compromise in TX, the flights to the East Coast are frequent and inexpensive. ?Therefore, I'm counting on several more years of sailing on Orion, though a sale is certainly more in our conversations these days. Btw, I've had insurance through Progressive since we bought Orion in 2012. ?Kevin Severance in Kemah TX is my agent. ?They have never demanded a survey, although I did one a few years ago to establish a cost basis. ?It's my feeling that Kevin gets more wiggle room due to the volume he brings to Progressive, but I could be wrong. ?It may surprise some, but the Houston/Galveston area has the fourth larges concentration of boats in the country. Re: Surveyor near Kennebunkport Maine
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýSo the same question goes for George Gallup. I need an insurance survey in the fall. He did that for me on Mt Desert in 2020 as well as the pre purchase in 2015.?I¡¯m not getting an answer to email or phone but he appears to still be operating, albeit under a different company name.? His reports are extremely thorough & he knows Sabres.? On Apr 24, 2025, at 7:35?AM, Alan via groups.io <alanpressman@...> wrote:

Agustin, If I am seeing the photo correctly, the bolt in question looks like it's just a connector for two grounds, i.e. the black wires. ?It sits right in front of and in the channel for a weep hole, so the water will always accumulate in that low channel from somewhere else. ?Where, I cannot say. Re: Very Wet Bilge (another leak)
Thank you. There's water weeping in from further aft. It looks like the channel hole(s) is at the boat's center-line and is far back enough that I can only imagine it is from scupper connections or rudder post. It's difficult to follow it any farther from the aft cabin so I will be going into the lazeret at the stern to see what's up. Removing that large cowl around the rudder post to have a look will not be fun.
I'm going to clean up the packing gland and, yes, it is leaking. Repacking is one of the things I'm going to work on. For a 1.25 inch shaft on a Sabre 425 with a W46, would I use 1/4 inch packing? ?
The haulout nearest to Montego Bay is 100 miles east. In the Caribbean, that means straight into the wind all the way and that means motoring for 24hrs. Once I get there (Port Antonio) there will be a travel lift and chocks, but no services, no labor, and no parts. I'm trying very hard to plan something workable and the sooner I can get out of here safely, the better life will be!
?
Thank you for all your help, everyone. It's appreciated and good to know I'm not fully alone with these problems.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýSorry I didn¡¯t answer completely¡ the rest was in my head! ? It is a ground for something. Possibly a ground system, a lightning bond, an SSB, refrigeration etc.Allison Lehman Swiftsure Yachts allison@... Cell: 510.912.5800 Fax: 510.860.4640

Re: Very Wet Bilge (another leak)
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýAugustine, that is a ground. ?Your packing gland should not be green. ?I suspect that is a big source of leakage. It looks like you have had standing water there for a while. ?You should take a bronze brush to the packing gland and clean it up and make sure it isn¡¯t leaking.Allison Lehman Swiftsure Yachts allison@... Jeff, vertical stored vertically.? On the Targas the CNG locker was configured differently.? They're in the aft/port locker, in a near vertical configuration. On Wed, Apr 23, 2025 at 1:01?PM Jeff Bartlett via <Jhbartlett=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: Very Wet Bilge (another leak)
Is the area on the other side of the weep hole, aft of the bolt in your picture, dry? If not, the water may be coming from someplace farther aft.? You would have to look on the outside to see what is attached to the other end of the bolt. It might be a zinc or a ground plate.? Be ready to stop a much faster leak if you try to tighten it, in case it crumbles away or breaks?off. On Wed, Apr 23, 2025 at 12:34?PM Augustin via <classical=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: 34-2 Targa Propane Conversion
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThe 34 after-cabin has a vertical locker. Thus, they are vertical tanks. It made that part of the conversion process easier. Scott On Apr 23, 2025, at 1:01?PM, Jeff Bartlett via groups.io <Jhbartlett@...> wrote:
