I have a set of 6 BN covered hoppers and 1 CN Lifesaver Covered Hopper plus some detail parts and a set of 70 and 100 Ton Smoky Valley Trucks for sale as I'm going to have to move and need to downsize. CN Covered Hopper I'd like to sell for 50$, the other covered hoppers for 35$ each, trucks and parts for 50$. Would be willing to ship the whole set at a discount. I have never taken them out of their boxes.

I probably should just sit on my hands and stand aside for those who had more first-hand experience of what happened before I was in S scale, but my study of the past literature (and owning a Rex Suburban myself) suggests that what you have is the re-run of the Rex by Jack Sudimak as Putt Trains, indicated by the Mashima motor and the nylon worm and gear. I had one of the re-issued 2-6-0's with those modifications, as distinct from the brass worm, fiber gear, and PIttman motor in my other Rex locomotives. As to the trailing truck, I had not known that either Rex nor Culp ever did an Andrews truck; so far as I've been able to learn, the first Andrews was the Northeastern (later Kinsman), and yours doesn't look quite like that. The Rex trailing truck usually had working leaf springs, but I suppose some were made with coil. JGGK

Oriental SW-1 For Sale
Hi, My SW-1 has been in storage for a number of years. It's painted Southern Pacific Tiger Stripe # 1004 I haven't run it for about 15 years except to test it a few days ago. The cap on the stack is missing. The horn came off but is in the box. It has a very old DCC unit that probably needs to be replaced. Rex never made an Andrew¡¯s truck with flexible leaf springs. The early 2-4-4T Suburban kit (my first loco build ar age 14, in 1953) had a Cult leaf-sprung Andrews trailing truck. And the cast wheels were robbed on the back side. (These somewhat large Culp Andrews trucks are nearly dead ringers for the Benner¡¯s Crown trucks found beneath PRR Class H21 quad hopper cars.) A few years later I reworked my Suburban into a true NYC Class D2-a. Main changes: shortening the coal bunker and altering cab appearance. Trucks ... was Restarting...
NASG's Brass Car Committee (Don T., Mike F. and myself) ordered the OMI brass sprung Bettendorf 'T' section trucks as part of the NASG ACF Tank Car Project back in 1986. The committee didn't have much extra money so we were only able to get something like 100 pair. They were gone in a flash. Wish we could have ordered 500! Simon Parent did all the work and 3D manufacture on the Pre-Size trucks. His 'T' section Bettendorf's are also of the sprung variety. All Simon's and Pre-Size trucks go nicely with his kits and also the (sold out) NYC Spec 486 boxcar kit he and I did 4 or 5 years ago. Jim Kindraka On Sun, Apr 27, 2025 at 11:48 AM R. I haven't been very productive lately, sorta in the doldrums. To try and break out, I took the stainless Code 110 wheelsets I bought over the winter and began setting up an assembly line to build some 70 and 100 ton trucks. Extra trucks are always nice to have available, especially when you are in the midst of an interesting model build. I make several of my own brass trucks to help add weight to freight cars and lower the center of gravity. I also like them because the side frames are less apt to shatter when, while you're not looking, they roll off the workbench onto a concrete floor - we've all been there... That said, I'm experimenting using 3D printed Nylon bolsters. They can be made (relatively) inexpensively using the SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) process. Basically, the laser fuses together particles in a plastic powder bed to the shape called for by the 3D file, no support structure necessary. The surface is not smooth so I never use SLS for parts where smooth finishes need to show. It can be dyed black before forming, so no painting is another advantage. Brass bolsters are nice, but they are very unforgiving when it comes to construction form and fit, and tighter when sprung. Being a lazy person, I'd rather not spend a great deal of time filing. I'm finding the SLS-made bolsters fit easier and equalize a bit better. We'll see how they hold up over time. Anyway, that's what I'm up to, a couple photos attached. Jim Kindraka Grand Rapids, MI

Gents..... Every once in a while, a true gem emerges from the bottomless pit of Smiling Ed's train boxes. Today, I have some fond memories of visiting Wally Collins to see his layout and enjoy a fine Italian dinner near his home and also near the NS tracks. A wonderful day and evening to put it mildly. While there, I had the chance to acquire some rare stuff and chose the REX 2-4-4-T since the NYC had one (maybe more?) and I had never seen one before. I was excited..... Wally had his engine "improved" by a machinist in the Midwest somewhere. John Sudimak(sp?) and Ohio seem to ring in my ear, but that could be totally incorrect. Anyway, it has a Mashima can motor, scale wheels and the pilots have been "opened" to fit Kadee S scale couplers. Otherwise, it seems to me to be a perfectly original product from REX. It ran well on Wally's layout. I took it apart with the idea of repainting and installing a decoder. Like many aspirations, that one sat on the workbench for a long time and never got off first base. I did collect photos, decals, the owner's manual and various letters/emails advising me what to do and how to do it. All of this is included since it has no use elsewhere. As usual, if you'd like to have this engine running on your tracks, make your best reasonable offer and see if my ivories show in the moonlight. With some luck, the box will be heading toward you soon. Otherwise, without visible teeth, it remains with me. I must note that nobody has ever complained about my prices. Gentlemen.......... Here is something you really NEED -- not merely "want". Not on every day does a staging yard come up for sale. As the photo shows, this is a modular portable staging yard with these specs: 2' wide for most of the length (extends straight away beyond the left side of the photo). 20' long overall length. 90 degree bend at one end (yard throat, see photo). 4 sections -- each 5' long. 7 S scale tracks for most of the length (except for throat as shown). Elevation is chest high. Elevation can be modified by removing from or adding to the wood legs. Hollow doors with Homosote laminated onto them. Throat area is plywood with Homosote. S scale track could be replaced with N, HO, O or Lionel track. Scale Trains

Reading some business news, Scale Trains said if tariffs against China sometime soon, they will be forced to close their doors. The article mentioned Scale Trains as one of a group of twenty-five, iirc, model railroad companies who are commenting on the effect of the tariffs. As business news, Scale Train said the millions in investment to start up a factory here would mean making their products here as cheaply as China would make American Made even more expensive than with tariffs. Perhaps a final fire sale for us hobbyist? I, of course, have learned over the decades of investing, I cannot foretell the future. Perhaps an agreement will be reached tomorrow. As I have been working on this personal project I am working with my connection to make decals for this model. I will have a sheet of silver to fill thus making a high cost to me for just one set for this project or wait a while for my buddy to fill it with his projects. Howdy Y'all I¡¯m rapidly approaching the end of my 46th year in the hobby business. Year 47 starts in July and I greatly appreciate all of you who have been with me on this interesting journey. After a lot of pondering, I have decided to hang around for another year . . . maybe two. I¡¯ve got too many promised projects that need to be finished to stop now. That¡¯s the good news. More good news is that y¡¯all are keeping me very busy cutting, packing, and shipping product. Extremely appreciated! With over 500 kits in production, I'm still getting most orders out the door within a day or two. And even more good news is as I write this, the glue is drying on the sample builds of two C&O Quinnimont structures in O scale, a logging kit for S scale, and a couple more businesses for Cabin Creek in HO. More parts to proof as I finish the sample builds and instructions to write, but they will be released soon. And CAD work for an On2 Box Car is coming along nicely. Now on to the bad news . . . over the next few months I will be reevaluating the pricing on most of the kits. Many have not had a price increase in well over a decade, some multiple decades, and you know what has happened to costs . . . especially over the last four years. Hate to do it, but things cannot continue as is. And it is past time to evaluate the shipping structure. When I set the $5.00 flat rate back in 2001, it covered a large percentage of the USPS Priority Mail fees for the average shipment. Not even close today. So rather than spring this on you as a ¡®done deal,¡¯ you have been alerted and now have the opportunity to pick up more kits at the current price and shipping levels. My goal is to have the new price structure in place by the end of Summer if not before. On a slightly different subject, I just published my third Fair Winds novel. Getting three military crime fiction books written in just over four years ain¡¯t bad for an old guy. Fair Winds of Doubt takes place in West Virginia and features Commander Colt getting involved with a local murder spree in his hometown. Both the Virginian and Norfolk And Western rail lines are mentioned.
