I can't argue persuasively just from a limited memory of seeing stack light photos over the years—and obviously there were instances of coal burners with them—but my conjecture is that I can't recall any use on roads that DIDN'T also use oil-burners.? Now someone
with better knowledge, or at least a better memory, will surely cite exceptions...
While it is true that a competent fireman kept an eye on the stack as an indicator of fuel efficiency, I suspect an experienced one had a good feel, given the quality of the coal, how the fire was doing even without constant checking the color of the smoke.

开云体育Craig,
I've recently spent many hours watching
older VHS RR fan trips mostly on the 1:1 NG.? Your footage on your

Re: Anyone looking to buy S Scale trains my collection needs to get sold
开云体育Bill,? Coming from a hardened seller of
S equipment I am still feeling your pain as it's the same as
mine!? One seems to need photos, sometimes even when things seem
to be NIB.? I would think the stuff built by the "greats" would do
better displayed to those who still might have a 401?? With our
ranks thinning along with financial uncertainty, the incline is
now into? rugged territory!
I probably still hold 2-3 dozen items
from two owners but I'm not in the mood!?
In the past several years I've cleared
out a HOn3 layout of mostly brass power some wooden scratch
structures, and some machine tools.? It was a 6-8 month trip
mostly uphill.? Re-motored? little C&S steam went quickly
while typical NG buildings sold for peanuts eventually.?
Troxell's S layout was very large even
after the estate sellers got rid of the boxed brass.? This was
well over a year's selling mostly from this list.? What surprised
me was that he had some really old 0 scale that went very well and
sort of high.?
Couple all that with what I've been
selling personally, then Billy Clicks' accumulation was even
larger.? I hope all this stops as these are good friends and I'd
rather have them around talking and walking rather than my
receiving a minor % commission!

Re: Convention Holiday Inn
Bill, I'm not sure where you are getting your misinformation, but please?stop broadcasting it without confirmation. I contacted the hotel this morning, and they confirmed that there are about 70 room?nights left at the convention rate. They also added a few for Tuesday without being asked, but thanks for wasting my time.? Jamie On Mon, Apr 7, 2025 at 8:39?PM Bill Lane via <bill=[email protected]> wrote:

Think I saw some RPC at the old Park Lane Hobby a long time ago.

Re: airslide decals
Thanks. Wonder if NASG has them

In addition to #17, also #20 and #22, perhaps others.
Although no longer published by RPC per se, Ron's Books has since brought out some additional volumes.

John:
It should have been spelled out...? RPC - Railway Prototype Cyclopedia
Stunning volumes jammed with prototype history, construction and photos.? Topics reflected the author's interest and vast expertise.? Ed Hawkins remains a friend and my absolute "go-to" guy for ACF information...? They quit the series in
2017 but Pat Wider has since done two "special" volumes (#'s 35 & 36) on, among other things, '37 AAR boxcars - about 300 pages each!? I've attached an index FYI...

Re: For Sale Overland Alco S-2
开云体育FWIW: All those years ago when I was in scale S, I purchased a like new unpainted scale S OMI S-2. I paid $400.

I say that to let you see that this is likely a very good price. I am surprised it's not double that price.

Good luck in your sale, Bill!

Re: airslide decals
I for one don't know what RPC is.

Re: Yes, the builder’s plate # is correct.
Excessive smoke was always frowned on by railroad management - it wasted coal.? Short slogans to that effect were often stencilled on tender coal bunker doors.? That said, it was also pretty hard to control.? Some railroads decided to give their firemen the tools to work more efficiently - day or night. The Missouri Pacific and Frisco (as well as the NP) experimented with and actually used lignite coal for firing some locomotives.? Lignite is low in BTU's, barely coal by some accounts, and higher in moisture than bituminous coal, making proper firing and keeping up a good head of steam a challenge.? I can see the stack lights being an essential part of those operations.? I just wouldn't want to be the guy called on to climb on top of the boiler to clean the damn thing! ??
