SP Depot at NMRA PCR Convention
5
In the vein of "Show S Scale out there in the world" I entered this depot in the model contest. It is scratch-built, from drawings I made. Parts are laser cut or 3D printed. Some of the detail parts were downloads from Thingiverse, some I created in Fusion 360. One you might be interested in is the woman in the waiting room, which I created in DAZ Studio and then printed. The station agent is also done the same way, but the photo only shows him from the back. -Michael Eldridge

NWSL 1412-4

This spring is truly prefect for replacing missing SHS truck springs. But since I do not do Kadee delay uncoupling I have used it for the 802/802 coupler centering spring for years. It is stiffer than the Kadee centering spring. It keeps cabooses from bouncing at the ends of trains. NWSL has been out of stock for over 2 years, maybe longer. It appears they have them in stock again. 50/pkg 1412-4 Thank You, Bill Lane Modeling the Mighty Pennsy, PRSL & Reading in 1957 in S Scale since 1987 See my finished models at: http://www.lanestrains.com/My_Models.htm Look at what has been made in PRR in S Scale! Clinics at NMRA PCR Convention
My other "spread the word" was that I offered two clinics at the NMRA Pacific Coast Region convention last weekend. These are not S specific, but I always make sure to tell people I model in S Scale. You don't have to be a superstar to present these clinics - you just have to be competent at something that other people might find interesting. It is just another way for me to show that people are modeling in S Scale. Go big
2
Kim I am probably guilty of suggesting the big radius advice. But I have a LOT of locos that need bigger turns. For me bigger is always better. I came }{ close to my EM-1 sideswiping my J1 so that ended it all for me. Big turns with wide spacing so NOTHING will hit anywhere. If you plan like I did that keeps you from tearing down and starting over when you get THAT loco years later that you never thought you would own, and it will not run on your current layout. . http://www.lanestrains.com/My_Layout.htm I am already sure everything I own will run on every inch of track. That was rule #1 to not be broken. Annual group renewal

I got an email from I/O that that we have until April 7th to pay the annual $220 fee. Pieter Roos is the designated wrangler but we cannot expect him to pay it. We should be able to get 11 people to kick in $20.00 each pretty quickly. But let¡¯s hear from Pieter on how he wants this to happen first. Choice of Scales (was My modest S collection

The more surprising in that 00 used 4mm instead of the bizarre 3.5mm. North American TT largely went into decline because HP, its largest manufacturer and biggest booster, stopped making it; I don't think I ever heard why that happened, whether something went wrong for Hal Joyce or something else. It didn't help that one of the best advertisements for that scale was Glyn Lewis's column in RMC which was discontinued (along with Dick Andrews' narrow gage column) when Charles Penn, the publisher, started slashing costs by stiffing writers and going to toilet paper pages. I've always wondered whether that had anything to do with bankrolling his ghost town in Arizona. It was a great publication before that, and one of the reasons I got into TT at the time was because of the column; it took ten or twelve years after Hal Carstens took it over before RMC started recovering its reputation. Postal delays are getting outta hand
15
Over the past 4 weeks, I mailed 2 Priority boxes to the same address near Chicago. The 1st took 8 days, the last one arrived yesterday after 10 days in transit. It spent 5 days sitting in the Indianapolis distribution center. I know the Midwest has had its fair share of storms lately but these delays are ridiculous, especially for "Priority" service. I recently rec'd an order from a modeler located in France. UPS Expedited price is about $1 less than USPS Global Express and they claim a 4 day delivery versus stated 10 days for the mail, which is often longer. If the postal service continues to worsen, UPS will be getting my business again. For those of you sending and receiving items on a regular basis, I'm sure you've seen a NOTICEABLE decline in mail service. BBBB = Beautiful Bare Brass Buckeyes........(savor the flavor)
4
Gentlemen........ Here is what I have for sale from the Buckeye Department. Once these are gone, they are gone forever. Please do not ask me who made them. I can only guess. I did mark down my guess, but don't consider it accurate. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since I bought them. As usual, make your best reasonable offer upfront. If your offer makes me smile, the Buckeye(s) will be yours. If I smirk or frown, they will remain with me. A brief description accompanies each photo. Enjoy......... Email preferred. Phone works. Loizeaux aht SBC // Global daht net 1-650-962-1577 Thanks........"S"miling Ed L. Buckeye #1 is sprung and equalized. I suspect made by SSLS, but not certain. Buckeye #2 is sprung and equalized. Kemtron maybe?? Buckeye #3 is sprung and equalized. Overland for sure. See next two photos. Buckeye #3 continued...... One more photo to go.... Buckeye #3 continued again. Buckeye #4 (note roller bearings) will be sprung and equalized once you build the kit. Here are the parts. You will need to make a bolster and provide wheels. Hint: I have mint NWSL premium solid nickel-silver chemically weathered wheelsets at $3 per axle (25% discount from NWSL price.) Using 3D printing technology to print a bolster would be an interesting project. Buckeye #5 (note roller bearings) has rigid "soft metal" sideframes, but they can be made sprung. Postal delays are getting outta hand and it all goes around!

Back when I was a wee lad my mom was called for jury duty. to bring things up to today! it was a truck that overturned hauling eggs! I would think that suit would have gone from a few hundred (in 50's money) to a Million or more today! Then in high school, a loaded cattle truck was driving on a secondary road during a blizzard and turned over in the ditch. .Several cattle were injured that resulted into a pile of' bovine in this storm-- the entire herd was shot! I do understand the Head of the Postal Service has resigned. Back when my Step-father was the local Postmaster. On a nice Summer evening. It was very common for someone to stop at the house and ask him if he could open up as they had just returned from a vacation trip and their SS check had probably arrived a day or two earlier. So we turned off the mower, got his keys to open up the office--always service with a smile! There is a plumb tree planted in our yard that was delivered late so a damage claim was filed! we planted the tree and after some time it came back, but I assume it should have been destroyed! Small towns and common sense vs Govt rules! In my last batch of BBB shipments all three boxes arrived in good order including one to our Northern neighbors. Bob Werre PhotoTraxx

Puter in a coma!
We had some heavy rain and other storm related things Sunday evening so power was lost twice. My main Mac crashed and hasn't return since that time. So if I owe messages or business things, I don;t know that. I'm now using a Mac I normally use in my train room without accessories right now--So if I owe money--it's in the mail, if you owe me --your late! The I Mac I was using was actually given to me--my repair guy had a contract to update his client. Since I'm such a nice guy he gave me one that he had been in charge of, but the OS couldn't be updated. This had happened before a couple of years ago--it was asleep for several months then I heard Mac's familiar 'gong' sound and life was good till Sunday evening. So I don't know if or when this guy will return--or what words to repeat over the keyboard, or what sagebrush to burn near the screen! So I'm at reduced capacity for the present time! Bob Werre

drill bits?
11
I was changing a few mis. items in a drawer just a few minutes ago. I once bought a box of carbide drill bits from a train-show exhibitor. I think Micro tool people also sell the same thing--really just a bunch of bits (of random sizes!) in a plastic box, but each bit has a fat collar around it. I had thought that collar mount would save a lot of time just in not having to adjust the collet size for each bit change. I once tried to use them but it quickly broke. I don't think I've tried any since, so to the back of the drawer they went! I'm wondering if you gentlemen have used them successfully and how you deal with carbide bits? Bob Werre

Logging Corner I (left side)
4
Gents...... The logging corner is up for sale as a complete intact detailed industry. It is not cheap, but it will save you a TON of time (is time measured by weight?). Well over five years to build all the kits not to mention paying for the kits in the first place. If you want to buy a specific item rather than the entire package, let me know what you want and we can probably come to a mutual agreement. Photos below have short captions, but here are some general comments: Most red structures are built from BTS kits with the name Coon Gap Sawmill (or similar). All buildings are well made with very good craftsmanship -- except for one. The one exception is the main sawmill structure which is truly contest quality with many added details and full interior detailing including lights for the night scene. This is a rare bird indeed. Here are the pix: Exterior view of sawmill building. Looks rather ordinary until you remove the roof and look inside. As you can see from this interior view, the detailing is extensive including all the machinery, logs, planks, boards, workmen, etc. The complete process of converting a tree to sellable boards is conveyed with this model. BTS did a great job. I believe they now have a different sawmill available, but the Coon Gap model is no longer made. Mr. Wade will correct me if I am in error here. -- Ed Loizeaux Los Altos, CA www.nycvd.org
