Des Plaines Gunderson Huskies
Bought this Des Plaines 3 car Gunderson Husky Stack kit from Bill Roberts a while back. Built them over a series of five evenings last week. All were modified to accept metal 33” hi rail wheels from American Models. The metal wheels definitely help with the weight.
I found that the Kadee 802s mounted into the kit provided gear boxes were spot on with the coupler gauge. Painting will wait till warmer weather. Mocked up some containers till I find the right ones to purchase, either kit or RTR. Bill Philadelphia I:64 |

Bill, Are these NOS or still available from DPH? John D ?Bought this Des Plaines 3 car Gunderson Husky Stack kit from Bill Roberts a while back. Built them over a series of five evenings last week. 开云体育Don’t know what “NOS” means. I do not think they are available any more. Others might know better. ?They do seem to have various decals available for them.? Bill On Jan 22, 2025, at 10:16?AM, John Degnan via groups.io <scaler164@...> wrote:

开云体育I am curious how a correct coupler height was achieved with the first release car sand normal sized wheels. I am running custom 26” wheels to lower the cars to correct coupler height. With the built in draft gear there is no way to make any changes. ? ? Thank You, ? See my layout progress at:

开云体育Not sure how to answer you Bill. The plastic wheels in the kit that I bought from Bill Roberts measured to 33”. ?I used 33” wheels from American Models. With your missive in my head I was curious as to what I would find when I worked through the instructions and installed the Kadee couplers in gear box part of the body spacer.? As you can see in the pictures I sent, they work with the gauge on the track at the back of my work desk and work with the other stock on which I have Kadee couplers. I was surprised given what you had commented.? Some blow ups of that test track at the back of my desk attached. Sorry, I do not have an exact pic of the car mated to the gauge. ?There is also a very short snip of two of them connected to my GP-35 with Kadee.? 开云体育If I'm not mistaken, Bill bought my
double stacks a few years back, and these were the original
Jackman/S scale America.? The kit included RB trucks and plastic
wheels.? Unfortunately the parts tree had a rough area where they
were attached.?? They were built with those purpose built RB
trucks which seemed a tad smaller than the Ace versions...aka
before AM/SHS versions.? Later on I asked Ron S.? if he had any of
those left.? He sent me handful of parts from which I made another
pair and a spare, perhaps--I used the enclosed plastic wheels at
first, but replaced them with NWSL metal versions.? I didn't have
any coupler problems.
I'll also mention that the RB trucks
had two versions.? The first ones were made thicker where they
attached to the bolster, the sideframes also didn't equalize.? The
second version had thinner cross sections and equalized.
Initially I did have height problems
with the spine cars.? I owned the sample set AM provided that I
bought later.? Ron B. sent me scale flanged wheels for those--I
was doing a lot of buying, selling, swapping, at that time!

From: Stan Stokrocki via groups.io <sscalerr@...> The kits are from Larry Jackman's S Scale America, prior to Des Plaines' ownership. Microscale did do S scale decals. Stan Stokrocki > > > >> > > > >> I seem to recall that Mr Jackman sold individual unit kits and also three-unit kits.? The latter were intended to be assembled drawbar-connected.? The three wells then would technically be one car for switching and accounting purposes.? The 3-well assemble would have one car number.? This was no doubt based on some?prototype practice, but it obviously never became popular.? I suspect most if not all of these 3-unit cars were separated and?given proper couplers and individual numbers.
?
Like Bill Lane, I am surprised your coupler height came out correct.? I had that coupler height problem with the RTR cars and solved it with 28 inch wheels from AM.
?
Good luck with finding or making containers.? It seems the?Larry Jackman container kits made containers?a ?little short to avoid interference with truck wheels, especially high-rail wheels. ?
?
When you get your containers going, don't put a 20 footer on top of anything else.? The 40-foot and longer containers have no support at?their center for anything else above them.

开云体育I can add that this “3 car kit” does not and did not have draw bars or any indication of making a decision to use draw bars. All cars have 2 trucks and two coupler pockets.? The instructions do however make mention of the “C” car, which would be in the middle, between the A and the B in a modern prototypical 3-well set where the A-C and C-B share a truck for a total of 4 trucks. ?The instructions also mentioned doing away with handbrake on the C car, though it was included in the kit. I chose to model them a three separate cars, not an A-C-B set due to them all having 2 trucks.? Noted about the 20’ on top of the 40’! ?I had that thought in the back of my mind and hadn’t gotten around to researching for sure. Thanks.? The 40’ of container fits perfectly between the extended car side walkways and there is no interference with the AM hi rail wheels. I DID have to make the flange notches slightly bigger on the truck bolster/frame.? Pics of the instructions just for everyone’s elucidation.? Bill H.,
Early on with the Des Plaines and S Scale America Huskies, I found they can carry ONLY lightweight containers (plastic, foamcore, paper or cardboard). Die cast containers, while great as scenery, are too heavy for the frame and bolsters. I have one of these cars that is parked on a spur with nowhere to go (maybe the track owner will receive a storage fee). The frame is permanently bowed and the bolsters are bent. It took only a few hours on a display for the damage to occur. If you plan to use 20 foot containers on the Huskies, use them in pairs, on the bottom with a 40+ foot container on top. Do you have a Reporting Mark selected yet? Dave McBrayer Auburn, CA -- Dave McBrayer Auburn, CA |
Maybe, maybe not. DPH has had some rerun by Microscale.

I suspected as much and was not planning on "heavy" containers unless i would choose to beef up the sides of the cars by sistering in some thicker stock styrene as a possibility.? For the mockups I just used corrugated and foam core with some small 3/8" square tiles glued into the boxes for a little bit of extra weight.
?
No decision on colors or reporting marks yet.? I am not a time/place stickler, at this point I just like to model, whatever.? I tried to order some TTX and BN decals from DPH but their website is not currently taking credit cards, so one needs to call.? I can't paint until warmer weather, when I can get outside.? So still time to decide.

开云体育I was making some new shots, so I
couple of minutes in my
'truck' drawer brought out some of the
SSA/DesPlains Husky type RB trucks.? I had mentioned yesterday the
two types produced.? They are shown in these photos.? Notice one
is the first mostly unequalized version, while the other has a
mounting 'peg' that allows for more equalization movement.? I also
put in a wheel that originally came with them...notice the
roughness of the wheel--not a bad sound if you want emphasis on
flat spots on wheels !? That truck works well with my single
QualiCraft all door boxcar of old--still a great looking car, BTW!

Actually, Bob, I'm pretty sure those are both PRS RB trucks.? Perhaps someone on the list knows the actual story, but when John Verser introduced his ACF kit, it came without trucks (I infer much of the first production run went to G&W in Syracuse).? At some
later point he developed the trucks with integral brake beams.??
I think the other ones came even earlier, but I am not sure.? That indented half shaft to hold the side frame was a common feature of PRS trucks.
