I can add that this ¡°3 car kit¡± does not and did not have draw bars or any indication of making a decision to use draw bars. All cars have 2 trucks and two coupler pockets.?
The instructions do however make mention of the ¡°C¡± car, which would be in the middle, between the A and the B in a modern prototypical 3-well set where the A-C and C-B share a truck for a total of 4 trucks. ?The instructions also mentioned doing away with handbrake on the C car, though it was included in the kit.
I chose to model them a three separate cars, not an A-C-B set due to them all having 2 trucks.?
Noted about the 20¡¯ on top of the 40¡¯! ?I had that thought in the back of my mind and hadn¡¯t gotten around to researching for sure. Thanks.?
The 40¡¯ of container fits perfectly between the extended car side walkways and there is no interference with the AM hi rail wheels. I DID have to make the flange notches slightly bigger on the truck bolster/frame.?
Pics of the instructions just for everyone¡¯s elucidation.?

The kits are from Larry Jackman's S Scale America, prior to Des Plaines' ownership. Microscale did do S scale decals.

I seem to recall that Mr Jackman sold individual unit kits and also three-unit kits.? The latter were intended to be assembled drawbar-connected.? The three wells then would technically be one car for switching and accounting purposes.? The 3-well assemble would have one car number.? This was no doubt based on some?prototype practice, but it obviously never became popular.? I suspect most if not all of these 3-unit cars were separated and?given proper couplers and individual numbers.

Like Bill Lane, I am surprised your coupler height came out correct.? I had that coupler height problem with the RTR cars and solved it with 28 inch wheels from AM.
?
Good luck with finding or making containers.? It seems the?Larry Jackman container kits made containers?a ?little short to avoid interference with truck wheels, especially high-rail wheels. ?
?
When you get your containers going, don't put a 20 footer on top of anything else.? The 40-foot and longer containers have no support at?their center for anything else above them.
