Jace,? Although I wasn't that much in the loop, John and I talked frequently regarding some of his projects.? Some of those projects were in the development of the 2 flat boxcar kits (X29 & CGW) that Desplains/ SSA finally released.? When I was shooting his ad photos of the ACF as well as some of his the 50' (DD) boxcars I would ask him about RB trucks.? He always returned with the Ace versions.? He was reluctant to tool any RBs.?

When I came to the first ever ACF hopper cars, I was handed a test shot for the 3/16's S Magazine intro photo.? That happened at one of the NASG conventions, Pittsburgh perhaps!? I later talked with Walt and he was semi happy to have John buy back what he didn't sell.? I put that test shell in a drawer someplace, over the next few years,I purchased several of the kits and gradually took those excess parts and added nearly all the missing parts and drilled mounting holes in that test shot.? The final result was a multi colored car just like old Johnny Cash's Cadillac car/song!
?
I'll stick with my version that those trucks were original from Jackman and only modified when or shortly after he went belly up! Now however the trucks now sold by SSA are another version all together!

Actually, Bob, I'm pretty sure those are both PRS RB trucks.? Perhaps someone on the list knows the actual story, but when John Verser introduced his ACF kit, it came without trucks (I infer much of the first production run went to G&W in Syracuse).? At some later point he developed the trucks with integral brake beams.??
I think the other ones came even earlier, but I am not sure.? That indented half shaft to hold the side frame was a common feature of PRS trucks.

I was making some new shots, so I couple of minutes in my
'truck' drawer brought out some of the SSA/DesPlains Husky type RB trucks.? I had mentioned yesterday the two types produced.? They are shown in these photos.? Notice one is the first mostly unequalized version, while the other has a mounting 'peg' that allows for more equalization movement.? I also put in a wheel that originally came with them...notice the roughness of the wheel--not a bad sound if you want emphasis on flat spots on wheels !? That truck works well with my single QualiCraft all door boxcar of old--still a great looking car, BTW!

While it reviews an N scale model, this provides some background information on the drawbar connected cars.?

Interesting.? The kit that I put together had the type on the left.

SSA used the truck on the right for the Bethgon coal porters. ?The one the left looks like PRS.

I can add that this ¡°3 car kit¡± does not and did not have draw bars or any indication of making a decision to use draw bars. All cars have 2 trucks and two coupler pockets.

> > > > > > > > > >
That's interesting because the instructions, a copy of which you attach, begins with a parts last that includes part "300-15 Two drawbars."

But it's no big deal,??You're doing what I and many of us would do with this kit??--??making three stand-alone cars.
< < < < < < < < < <
The instructions do however make mention of the ¡°C¡± car, which would be in the middle, between the A and the B in a modern prototypical 3-well set where the A-C and C-B share a truck for a total of 4 trucks. . . . . . . . . .
> > > > > > > > > >
What you are describing there is not a 3-unit draw-bar connected car but rather a 3-unit articulated car. That is an entirely different car with, as you say, a shared truck between units.?? In the real world, I think those are more common than stand-alone cars.??An articulated car with three units will usually have 53 foot wells, and a car with five units will have 40 foot wells.??(If there are any exceptions to that rule, they're rare.)

An S scale double-stack 3-unit articulated car has been promised by Des Plaines Hobbies.??But I wouldn't count on it any time soon.

When you start thinking about containers for these cars. here's a suggestion.??Go to
and download what ever you want in HO.??They are not too expensive.??Put the digital HO files on a thumb drive, take it to Kinkos or any good print shop, and ask to have them printed at 136%.??

The drawbar thing seems to have been a passing fad that wasn't just limited to container cars.

I'm wondering if the drawbar thing proved more difficult for Bad Order Cars?

Oh my, well what a total cock-up that was then on my part!? I never even noticed the drawbars in the parts list.? They were for sure not in the box or identified in the pictures of the parts.? I just followed along with the directions, comparing the parts called out in the written paragraphs to the included pictures and the sprues.
?
The instructions just called for installing couplers into the (6) coupler pockets.
?
C'est la vie.
?
I wonder if there were inconsistencies, back in the day, between the intent of the editing of the paperwork, the actual manufacturing and the packing of the boxes?? I also bought the kit second (at least) hand.? No fault to the seller, Bill!? :-)? I have what I wanted.
?
Thanks,
?
