Re: lineage for CSNY 22-2-02 - four deuces version

Joe - While reading your post I had a severe flashback to being on
the floor of MSG, night 2. That's a great little anecdote. It reminds me of my taper friends at Dead shows, with them frantically flipping tapes and making sure they didn't screw up the connection for the rest of the line connected to the soundboard. |
lineage for CSNY 22-2-02 - four deuces version
Penczak, Joe x23367
thanks for asking and for the kind comment, Dave.
For anyone else who wants to know - the CSNY 2-22-2 show was recorded by yours truly on a Sony Minidisc (MRZ-35) with CoreSound binauaral mics( clipped to either side of my eyeglasses and pointed outward not forward, to get that true spatial-binaural-way-your-ears-hear sound), a -12db attenuator, and a bass roll-off filter from row J on the floor (that's the 10th row behind the ridiculously expensive circle jerk seats - and means dead center - though slightly to the right). The occasional scrackkkkles are not digital problems, but are in fact audience members unwittingly stepping on and crushing the similarly ridiculously expensive plastic cups of champagne that the waiters (I kid you not!) were selling, cups which invariably end up on the floor in the aisle for people to crush. The mini-disc was then transferred to CDR via a Gemini PDM-11 mixer with 8-band graphic equalizer (I merely boosted the sound levels across the board to be just below the red zone, no other tweaking needed or done) to a Phillips stand alone burner. Subsequent copies were made on a pc (because pc blank discs are a lot less than the ridiclously expensive audio blanks). And anecdotally speaking, let me just say that I've recorded about a half dozen shows with this CoreSound mics/attenuator/roll-off filter setup - Dylan at msg last year, Hot Tuna a week later, Phil & Friends a few days after that, King Crimson at the Beacon a few days after that (amazing how many people I've never met on any list have found that partuclar title on my list and arranged for trades...this is NOT a left-handed grovel for more trades - I've given it up for Lent...) And in general, they produce fine audience recordings. And look cool when you're wearing them. But stealth recording remains a crapshoot - at the CSNY show I had to hope that the opening set did not include any unscheduled long jams - it clocked in at 78 minutes or so, and mini-disc blanks come in 80 minute max varieties (though someone has written to me that I could use the mono feature with no noticeable difference in sound and get twice as much recording time - I don't have the cahonas to try that, would you?) And during the intermission, I unplug the mics and filter to save on the batteries - you really can only count on about three hours of non-stop recording time with a brand new set, - as well as hide the gear as the house lights are up, then try to figure out when it's about five minutes before the second set begins so I can reconnect everything. Needless to say, I was off by about four minutes - the house lights dimmed and I had to fumble in the blue glow of a penlight to get hooked up, only to discover seconds before the opening salvo tossed to the crowd by Crosby ("Alright, whatcha been doin'?") that I had the mic plugged into the wrong jack.... But that was mild compared with the frantic moments that passed while Take Me Out To The Ballgame played and I was changing discs - knowing that what followed the 7th inning stretch added to the 2nd set would be way more than 80 minutes. Minidiscs record in much the same manner that pc's record files - the data is held in a buffer until you hit the "save" button, then they are permanently written to the disc. This process takes about 20 seconds on a minidisc - so if you run out of time, it's not like the old analog days where you (with practice) can flip a tape or change to a new one and hit the record/play buttons in about 3 seconds, only losing (if you were wise and lucky) between-song banter. So there I am, buying some peanuts and cracker jack, watching the blinking l.e.d. proclaim "saving...saving...saving..." and finally "saved" (the baseball equivalent would be "going...going...gone") - I take the set two disc out, pop in an empty disc for the rest of the show, wait the 5 seconds that elapse while the player decides whether what I just put in is a blank disc or something I want to listen to, finally hit the record button (which is trickier than you would think - remember they don't call it MINI disc for nuthin'!) and pray that I didn't miss anything...other than the crowd singing and applauding. The result of this fumbling towards ecstasy? As you hear on disc three - it opens with the cell phone ringing - which was not someone in the audience but rather piped over the loud speakers - and then the unmistakeable notes of "Let's Roll"....nothing was missed. phew! Next time- I'm a-gonna ply the camera man with some of those plastic cups of champagne and strawberries for a line-in to his camera...... ...the fox goes looking for a friend |
dear neil...
hey, how ya doin????
when you get to austin, wanna meet down by the river??? stevie ray vaughn statue....? nobody would ever suspect you'd be there and it's on the south shore (south austin pulls harder). u should check out the statue, it's very cool. from that spot, you'd have 3 directions to run and 1 to swim. wouldn't advise swimming in that river tho....nasty current. once when my son was little, was paddlin him around in a canoe and he JUMPED out of the boat and into the river. had to jump in after him...couldn't believe he did that. he jist has a real THING for water, ya know. well, see ya, mira |

Caught it about halfway through and my first reaction was I thoughtI haven't heard AYP? yet, but I'm intrigued by this similarity between Differently and Berlin thing. Mainly because in a lot of ways Berlin has already been recycled as Love And Only Love (especially the verse melody). Which part of Berlin surfaces on Differently? Laura Nyro Grovel (NNC)
Alok Ahuja
A work acquaintance (Carl) has been trying to find some unreleased/live
Laura Nyro music on the web. After some searching, he told me he had been offered this "deal": $15 per disc ("that's because I don't have anything to trade"), PLUS Carl has to send blanks to the highway robber (and possibly even return postage!). (Think of this as Ebenezer's version of a B&P!) Carl is still pondering whether to go for it. I admit, I barely know who Laura Nyro is. And Carl and I aren't close friends. However, he's a good guy, and I'm outraged by the "deal" he's been offered. I'd like to surprise him with a few (2-4) discs. Does anyone have any live or alternate Laura Nyro to trade or B&P? I've got a decent (not huge) list of Richard Thompson, 60s/70s Dylan, the key early 70s Neil things, 1970s Pink Floyd (a guilty pleasure!), plus some nice Van, Los Lobos, Little Feat, Edie Brickell, etc., etc. to trade. I believe Carl has all the official Laura Nyro -- so I'm sure he'd love whatever you Nyro fans think is best. Thanks, Alok |

re Goin Home on Amazon
re"
"Just visiting Amazon.com's free downloads and Goin Home is on their hot list. In similiar news I also got the single in the mail yesterday. Has anyone checked out ebay to see if people are trying to make some $$ on their copy?" I did check ebay the other day and I saw a handful of ads for promo posters and one factory pressed promo CD, in England. I was surprised I didn't see more. The CD was asking for around $15 US I believe. Certainly no one appears to be selliing CDRs of the downloaded songs. Ebay's not been a bad place to be for a Neil fan, I've found some good vinyl for relatively cheap & seen a few good CSNY tix go for less than face. As long as I remember to pass up all those On The Beach "imports". bobzilla77 Bobzilla77 |
ISO: Neil 4/28/99 (alt. source)
jfranzreb
I have the Neil Young solo '99 show on 4/28/99 in Chicago. However,
my copy has 2 people heard agrueing then continuing to curse at each other during the beginning of 'Long May You Run' and continue towards the end of it. If multiple sources do exist, it is likely track #4 on CD #2. Other than this, it is an excellent recording. They don't overpower what is going on, I'd just like something with out them bickering. Does anyone have an alternate source to this that would be willing to trade it off? Thanks, Jeff |
Those Top Five Albums

As always, subject to change. It's truly phenomenal
how specific listening sessions can sweep one away and make one loudly proclaim an album to be the best music in the solar system! Here they are today: Comes a Time After the Goldrush Zuma Harvest Moon Silver and Gold Year of the Horse deserves honorable mention....what with it being the best live album by ANYONE....EVER.... and all....and then there's Rust Never Sleeps....sheez....
