Shack in a bag?
Hello All,
I have being trying to get WSJT-X to work on my RPi4B (4GB). I am using Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS. The rig is a QRP Labs QDX. Everything is 'ok' with Windows but I could really be a ton happier using the Pi or maybe an Inovato Quadra (I am waiting for one to arrive). The Pi is my favourite choice. Using WSJT-X via a plain USB soundcard (audio from a truSDX) everything is (kind of) ok but the QDX/Pi combo is my #1 choice. Does anyone have any ideas? I would love to climb a hill or even do a POTA thing. I am ok at following instructions. TNX, Tryg -- |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello Bob, Which guides have you tried and at what step did you get stuck?? We can try helping you solve a specific issue if you give us one.? As an alternative, I have my guide at which is a cookbook style doc which should get packet working.? If you have questions and/or problems, ask away. --David KI6ZHD On 10/15/2022 10:57 PM, Bob Bennett via

Re: Gpredict cannot connect to Yaesu FT817
Trying to get gpredict and wsjtx to work together. Using the rigctl command above (with a different port # and baud rate) seems to work fine in gpredict. I had read that for rigctl to be used by WSJTX you have to select that as the ¡°rig¡± in the radio config tab. However, it¡¯s a Hamlib/rigctl line and now I¡¯m getting a hamlib protocol error (even though gpredict is working fine, and also choosing FT817 in WSJTX seems to work ¡ but by itself¡gpredict and WSJTX seem to fight with each other if both are running while ¡°FT817¡± is selected in WSJTX). Any thoughts appreciated. Rob KA2CZU |
Re: Gpredict cannot connect to Yaesu FT817
Using N3RDR¡¯s rigctl line, on my rpi 4 and version it¡¯s device 1020 and I have a baud rate of 4800, it worked great.
Followup question: I¡¯m trying to use gpredict to track sat frequencies, but I want to run FT4 using wsjtx or something else. ?Anyone know how to allow one program to control CAT (gpredict) and yet allow transmit/receive control as well? Right now gpredict and wsjtx are ¡°battling¡± for control of the FT-817. I am using an xggcomms digi 2 cable for cat/audio interface to the FT-817. Seems like somehow I should be able to make this work, but I haven¡¯t found the secret sauce yet. Rob KA2CZU |
Jackson County Mississippi Hamfest Nov 11th and 12 2022
This may be of interest to y'all living near Mississippi, otherwise please ignore. Thank you.
?
Greetings y'all:
? The Jackson County Amateur Radio Association (JCARA) is hosting a Hamfest on November 11 (Friday) and 12 (Saturday). ? What is a Hamfest? ? * It is a gathering of amateur radio operators and others (from MS, AL, LA) that enjoy electronics and technology to meet, exchange ideas, and attend forums. ? * It is also an opportunity to buy and sell new and used equipment.? This includes ham radios, CB radios, computers, monitors, coax cables, antenna, connectors, or anything that supports electronics new or old. ? * Provides exposure to local and area businesses. ? This is our once a year fundraiser to support our amateur radio club for next year¡¯s activities (RACES and repeater). For questions or to reserve a table(s) for this year¡¯s Hamfest contact our Treasurer (Jerry, N5MES) at JCARA.Treasurer@.... ? Attached to this email is our Hamfest Flyer. ?

Re: 64-bit OS
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýYep, that¡¯s the whole idea behind having a different card. If I¡¯m in need of the Pi, and a program is only available 32 bit, I¡¯ll still have it easily. This is more just exploratory, and like you say, I have an 8GB Pi4, why not play with it? The three I really use the most are the fldigi suite, WSJT-X, and GridMapper. But there¡¯s plenty that get sporadic use, QSSTV, CQRLog, gpredict, etc.?Thanks, Dan

Re: 64-bit OS
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýSince you have a 8GB Rpi4, you have plenty of RAM so that won't be an issue.? The decision then really comes down to the software that you use.? There is still more 32bit amateur radio software out there than 64bit but most of the modern programs now work as the developers have ensured their programs compile for both 32 and 64bit as well work on ARM.? I say you give it a try and see what you think but I would also advise that for older Raspberry Pi boards with 1GB of RAM (or less) like a 3B+, etc.. stick with the 32bit OS. --David KI6ZHD On 10/11/2022 07:27 PM, Daniel Holmes

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThanks. I haven¡¯t kept up on that project since I typically roll my own, and wasn¡¯t aware he¡¯s got a 64 bit distro. Check out Ham-Pi. Dave Slotter has a 64 bit version with just about every program available compiled as 64 bit in his image.

Re: Unable to reach my Flex radio via my raspberry pi 4B and Tailscale via my network. Wi-Fi connection is fine
That is NOT a good practice.
I see MANY attempts per day trying to hack on my internal devices that aren't detected and stopped by the router firewall.? And I have it set to high security.

One thing I do for home based networks id to configure Windows Firewall to ACCEPT all protocols IN and OUT. Since the LAN is protected by the router, there is little danger of hacking that could occur because of adopting this practice.? »å²¹±¹±ð¡? Also, make sure the Win11 machines have Network Discovery turned ON.? Although it should retain the previous setting, it may have assumed your LAN is not the same one it used to be.? This may be a Windows security issue.? »å²¹±¹±ð¡ On Tue, Oct 11, 2022 at 9:57 AM Bob Watson via <kn4hhptc=[email protected]> wrote:

Try resetting your home router so it has the opportunity to rebuild its routing table.? You may, just as a good practice, restart all your other home or LAN devices at the same time if possible.? Such problems often happen because one device gets turned off and later back on, or stays on while another device gets reset.? Essentially, device1 may have no knowledge that device2 has a different or changed IP (or other networking config parameter such as an authentication token) which expired.? This may or may not be what happened in this case, but surely it was working before, so starting with a clean state will allow all devices to have a new discovery of all other devices.? Good luck. And if this doesn¡¯t fix it, write back because the results are another clue which will prompt other questions.? »å²¹±¹±ð¡ On Sun, Oct 9, 2022 at 8:04 PM Bob Watson via <kn4hhptc=[email protected]> wrote: I have never run into this situation whereby I can only communicate with my Flex 6500 via my Raspberry Pi 4B on my Wi-Fi connection using tailscale.?
