QTR Download
2
In light of my continuing issues with printing through QTR I tried to download an older version to see if that resolves the problem. But, when I select version 2.8.0 and download the file says it cannot be moved because it is still downloading. This message does not go away. Anybody have any idea what is going on?

P800 Issue
8
Thanks to some help on another forum I resolved my printer connection issue yesterday. I was able to print fine for the rest of the day but then today a new issue cropped up. I tried to print using Print Tool and when I select the print command the printer feeds the material and then just runs it all the way through with no image. This is Mac OS 14 and a P800 printer. This is a new issue to me and my searches here do not come up with a result. I have tried reloading Print Tool, rebooting the Mac and the printer, trying different material (paper). Any ideas?

Print Tool doesn't save last settings on P800
Print Tool doesn't save the last setting or load a custom setting on the Quad P800UC. It does work on all my Piezo printers.

Direct to plate
12
Hi all Just joined the group. I am a photographer and a printmaker and recently started working on photogravure. Had my plates made for me up till now but I have now an Epson P900. I have downloaded and installed the QTR and looking forward to making some tests. Does anyone know what the media setting should be for a photogravure plate? Thank you for any assistance/advice you might have. Best Joe

Quad Tone Rip / Quadtone Profiler Pro
Two different products, but discussed in the same group. I have the impression, that this creates confusion among some. Richard, wouldn't it be an idea to create a dedicated group for your products? Sidney

QTR on a PC
Another suggestion: I use QTR on a PC with a P800 printer, which replaced the 3880 and 3800. I use the front feed to avoid “pizza wheel marks” and print my digital negatives on Fixxons for classic cyanotype process. I make my own curves with the Tools>Curves Creation. Each ink has a drop down choice of: Not Used, Gray Ink, Toner, Toner2, Copy curve from and Load Curve. Click on Load Curve and Curve and a Window or Panel opens with a Tab “Point List” then enter these value for a reverse “S” curve. 0;0 3;19 5;21.5 10;24 15;26 20;28 25;30 30;32 35;3440;36.5 45;39 50;41 55;44 60;46 65;48.5 70;50.575;53 80;56.2 85;59 90;63 95;71 97;81 100;100 Now when you put a Density Limit in for an Ink and choose Load Curve and put these values in Curve the reverse “S” curve will reduce to the Density Value, say 60 for screen shot example. So I use Yellow Ink for my main UV blocker ( actually a UV filter, as the MK or PK inks block UV light) and a little LK ink. See Attachments: How to Linearize: Measure a 21 Step Wedge with a Datacolor Spyder or other device to measure Lab values (maybe Density values work too) and use the QTR linearize feature or the Spyder software has a QTR linearize feature. BWmastery’s Richard Boutwell’s website had and excellent Excellent spreadsheet to Linearize but I don’t see it today. All 3 of which I have not used since I purchased in 2017 an early version of QCDN for the PC. The Yellow ink in the 3880 and 3800 may be a better “blocker/filter” so you may reduce to a 50 density or lower depending on tests.

Workflow for QuadTone RIP and PC users making Digital Negatives
2
Hello, I have been using my Epson 3800 to produce digital negatives using fairly conventional lookup table means. I wish to step up my digital negative game and use QuadTone RIP instead, but I'm having trouble getting an idea of what the actual workflow is, and how to proceed. What I am not wanting is "just buy a Mac" comments. I would like to figure this out on my PC, partly as a learning exercise. I purchased a copy of the book, "Kallitype, VanDyke Brown, and Argyrotype", which has some information about using a PC to create digital negatives, but it's disorganized, incomplete, and sends you in circles with examples that are screenshots with no values entered in them. So, I'm a bit stuck. From what I understand, I need to do the following: Create a .qidf ink definition file for my printer and then Linearize the curve(s) so that when I print negative files, they are printed as usable negatives I'm working on step #1. Here's where I'm at: I have installed QuadTone RIP I have selected my printer (Epson 3800) I printed the Calibration Mode image on Pictorico TPS100 I made a cyanotype (my preferred process) of the Calibration Mode transparency to identify what inks block UV best. What I don't know is how to proceed from here. I don't know how to interpret the cyanotype of the Calibration Mode transparency into values for Density and Limit that I enter into the Curve Creation tool. I have a Datacolor SpyderPrint spectrocolorimeter that I've used in the past to create Photoshop lookup tables, and I hope I can use it for these purposes. From what I can glean from the book I mentioned, here are the steps: For each ink I wish to use, find the percentage square that is my DMax - the darkest patch for each ink For each ink I wish to use, halve the percent under the patch that is DMax for that ink Put the values somewhere What I don't know is, where do I enter them? Are they the Density or the limit values? If they're Density, how do I determine the limit values? If they're Limit values, how do I determine the Density values? I've included a poor quality cell-phone picture of the print made from the Calibration Mode transparency I printed (my flatbed scanner is not working well). It looks like I should be using Black (PK in my case), Yellow, Light Black (LK) and then Probably Light Light Black (LLK) and maybe Cyan inks, omitting the light cyan, light magenta, and magenta inks. Am I on the right track? If you are willing to provide advice, correction, or further guidance I'd be very grateful.

Help Needed: i1 Profiler Error with Tricolor Gum Bichromate Calibration
9
Hi everyone, I’m experiencing a persistent issue with my i1 Profiler i1 PRO3 while calibrating my tricolor gum bichromate prints. Here’s a summary of the steps I've taken and the problems I’m facing: 1. Printed Targets: Used Piezography Pro DN curves, printed in magenta. 2. Measurement Setup: - Mode: Single scan (M0, M1, M2, and OBC) - Device Selection: RGB Printer 3. Calibration and Verification: Recalibrated the device, ensured alignment, and used a white backing. 4. Problem: Receiving the error: “Error: Reference colors do not match measured values. Make sure you are scanning row 1 and try again.” - Spot mode works, but measuring the entire row in single scan mode fails. - Tried measuring the first two rows in spot mode and continuing in single scan, but it didn’t work. Additional Information: - Successfully calibrated cyanotype, ziatype, and Malde Ware prints with the same setup. - I am suspecting the textured nature of gum bichromate might be causing the issue? I read about substrate detection, but could not find the option in i1 Profiler. - Attached is a photo of my latest test and the error message. Any suggestions on what might be causing this issue or how to resolve it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Graciana

DTP on P700 - Printer auto selecting incorrect paper settings
3
I bought a P700 about a year ago for DTP photogravures. I have been able to overcome most issues, but I continue to run into a problem with the printer auto selecting incorrect paper types. The only paper type that seems to create good plates is Poster Board - but anytime I change the size of plate, the printer wants to change it something else, usually Fine Art (Thick)... Is there some sort of override that I could change to only allow Poster Board? I print from the "Print-Tool" software and there isn't an option for Poster Board in those settings either, so I typically keep it on auto-select (which is likely part of my problem). Is there a place I can download more paper types for the "Print Tool" software? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

QuadToner Profiler-Pro quit unespectedly while opening measurement data text file.
3
QuadTonerProfiler-Pro quit unespectedly while opening measurement data text file. I'm including the measurement TXT file that I got from the i1Profiler app and i1PRO3 after meassuring the printed inkseparation10.tif. Loading this file crashes QuadTonerProfiler-Pro. After printing inkseparation10.tif with PrintTool, 21 columns and 10 rows (one for each ink) were measured with the i1Profiler, and saved as requested. That file makes tQuadTonerProfiler-Pro quit with an error. But if I measure only black and gray rows, without color inks an M0 scan with 21 columns and 4 rows can be opened in QuadTonerProfiler-Pro without a crash. In QuadTonerProfiler-Pro underCustom Profile Creator/Custom Curve Ceation after selecting the P900 from the dropdown menu all 10 inks show up with correct names. So whats the point to have 10 ink option when the interface only supports eight ink slots. Shall I measure 8 inks only to get a file 21 colums by 8 rows? And if so, which 2 inks shall I leave out? Thank you for your help! Ernesto Morales

Target Generator application has only 8 inks and names vary. Is there a guide to setup the program to print the target for the P900? Using enclosed original inks (10) in positive.

I have recently installed QuadToneRIP to my PC. When I add a tif file I get a message saying that tif file is not supported. Jpegs work ok though. Is there a solution to this? Cheers, Paul

Yes, another ICC profile in QTR question....
10
After having successfully completed a manual profiling of a non-coated paper for inkjet with K3 inks, I thought I'd turn my attention to proofing the output in LRCC. I was reading through past messages on the topic and found one from Roy that I thought would answer my question. I made a text file with one row for every density value of a 21-step target printed with the QTR profile. I then dragged the file over the QTR-Create_ICC app, and it created what looked like an ICC profile. Turns out this grayscale profile is not even visible within LRCC. I then tried the same with the RGB version of the app. This time LRCC sees it, I can select it while soft proofing, but the preview on a calibrated display (LaCie 526) looks nothing like the printout! In fact it looks much closer to the soft proof using an XRite generated profile of the same paper, which prints out very poorly by the way..I did read the document "Embedding Photoshop Curves in ICCs" by Paul Roark, but I'm not sure this is what I need, and even less sure that I actually understand the document (sorry Paul, my limitations not yours). So, I'd like to create an ICC profile that could help in pre-visualizing the print (soft proofing) in LRCC. any ides are welcome...Thanks. oark Paul Roark

Can I print black and white with only 8 of the 9 ink channels of a 3800?
3
I have given up trying to get my new to me 3800 printing on all ink channels.. The yellow appears to be dead. I have taken it apart several times. Cleared the yellow ink line, changed the yellow damper and even put a tube on the yellow feed tip of the print head and let ink jet cleaner sit in the tube hoping gravity would at least help the fluid reach and solvate the yellow head. No darn luck. Soooo, can I forget the yellow ink channel and use the other 8 inks and develop appropriate QTR B&W profiles? BTW I am making my B&W inks up using Paul Roark's recipes. Thank you Mark

Epson P5370
11
Dear All, Is the final verdict that profiles good for the P900 might work with the P5370 and the P5370 is usable with QTR? VLM=LM VM=M V PK MK CY LTCY GY LTGY Y Or can one of the QTR drivers currently in the files work for it like the InstallP5000.command though the inks are below, different? K C LC M LM Y LK LLK OR GR Richard, will you be adding the 5370 to QCDN? I have a P900 VDB (MAC) profile attached that is quite effective if someone wants to test it with the P5370 if that in fact is possible. Chris

Where does Digital BW The Print live now?

Hi, Slightly OT, with apologies. I used to subscribe to the Digital BW The Print mailing list aeons ago, but searches have turned up nothing. Does it still exist since Yahoo Groups folded? I’d like to ask questions that are more about my printer (P800) than QTR, although I do use QTR. thanks Richard richardsmallfield.com instagram.com/richard.smallfield instagram.com/tiny.pog View/Reply Online (#18949) | Reply To Group | Reply To Sender | Mute This Topic | New Topic Your Subscription | Contact Group Owner | Unsubscribe [rwsmallfield@...] _._,_._,_ -- http://richardsmallfield.com https://www.instagram.com/richard.smallfield
