Re: Whirring Noise - And the winner is!
Adam,
If you remember, my tube went out last summer. I tried to do it myself but found it very difficult without a lift. The problem is that the rear end must come out, and to do this you need to support the car in the air, with the axle free to role away. I could not find a secure way to this without worrying about the car falling off the stands. For me it was worth paying the $900.00 or so to have it done. If you decide this is a better option, Denny Akers at Akers Foreign Auto in Seattle, does great work. I highly recommend him. They did mine in a day. They also replaced the front and rear bearings and serviced the trany at the same time, which I also recommend. Rob Fossett |
Whirring Noise - And the winner is!
ADAM BIRNBAUM
Okay everyone,
I posted on sunday that my '88 S4 A/T had picked up a whirring noise. I'm going to get it verified with the local porsche shop tomorrow, but I think Geoff Taylor may be a winner. Of his many suggestions, he stated torque tube bearings. I just got done running the car with the front end in the air. Crawled underneath, and I swear the noise is coming from the torque tube. There is definitely a weird resonance thing going on under there. At first it sounded like it was coming from the bell housing, then the transaxle, then above the cats. I'd heard that drive train noises could be elusive, but man this is flat out weird. So, my local brethren, I'm all ears on torque tube replacement cost estimates. I would really like to take this on myself (really), but am not sure if I'm quite up to the task. I'll post tomorrow after I get the news from the experts. -Adam Birnbaum |

the upcoming Virginia City Hillclimb, etc. The Devek day came up, and to quote "great minds think alike" Marc... Anyhow, they were thinking about sponsoring something at Thunderhill or one of the other tracks in the area. So we are all on the same page. They will be posting something on Rennlist 928 soon with an event calender. I volunteered to do the homework for the track day, so let's see what Marc and Susan come up with for an event schedual. I would think if we do a day at Thunderhill, dinner would not be happening. Marc said he would want to tech cars before we track them, meaning he would be at Thunderhill, too, and I am sure he would like to get some track time in the White car as well. So as things work out, I will be posting updates. In the mean time, anyone interested, let me know. Susan will probably do some shirts, etc. Bye for now. Actually, had the 928 on a trip down to one of my sites yesterday (Longview)and it performed perfectly. Just love those early morning drives down the I-5 No traffic and averaging 80 and 90 mph. Only a few cops around and they seem more interested in getting thier morning coffee... This car is so smoooth at high speeds its unbelievable. On a side note, filling up at the local chevron down there (I can't believe premium is 15 cents cheaper down there ($1.70/gal) than here in Seattle ($1.85 and up/gal)) I noticed a sign that said race fuel. Upon closer inspection it was Sunoco race fuel 100 octane WOW.... they had leaded (110 octane)-off road use only and unleaded (100 octane). Didn't think they could legally sell leaded gas these days?? Thought about putting some unleaded in but at about $4.10 per gallon I thought not. Maybe just for the drag day :-0.. Re: timing belt
Hi Adam and Michael,
I think I can figure out what happened. Seems Michaels address was bounding on this mail list too, so did a bit of checking and realized that his email domain was incorrect in our records. I corrected it when I did the first mailing (back when gauging interest in Pac NW events) and then it appears that this correction got "lost". When I set up the new PACNW list I used his old domain and hence the bounce. Figured out what had happened and changed it. Funny thing, seems a lot of MSN email accounts have this problem i.e username@... rather than the correct username@.... Anyway, I did not see the original post so send it back out to the list and Im sure we will comment. ;-). More Devek Day
Hi again
I checked the website at Thunderhill Racetrack. They indeed have an "open test" day on the Friday before Devek Day. I have done a couple of days at Thunderhill with my Motorcycle roadrace buddies, and it is an awesome track! Wide, smooth pavement, great sight-lines, wide-open run-offs, and a really super staff. On prior trackdays there, our group got special rates at a really nice motel/resturant in Willows, about 15mins from the track, and I am sure we could do that again. Great resturant and bar also. It costs $175 for the day at the track. They have flaggers, ambulance, food, and fuel. I will look further into it, if there is interest. I also mentioned the idea to Susan Thomas to see if they wanted to 'officially' sanction the (maybe) event, or thought it was a good idea. We will see.We might also want to open it to other Rennlisters if everyone thinks that might be good. We could probably get the whole track, if there are enough of us, or otherwise just sign up early to assure us all a spot and run with whoever else is testing that day. The weekend has a private school on Sat. and a MC day on Sunday, so we probably would not have to deal with a bunch of racers tuning for an event the following day. So that is what we can do, if there is enough interest. Could leave here Thursday, meet in Willows for dinner, track -it Friday and go on down to Belmont, or whatever. Looks do-able and it would really be fun. If anyone is interested, let me know fairly soon so there is some time to organize stuff and maybe get it out to the other 928ers that might be interested, or even to other friends or whatever the group(if there is one) decides. Look out, Adam. Here comes the next shark promoter. Hey, we could have t-shirts with our nicknames on them..wait, that has been done.. Don DSQ Hanson |
Devek Day
Hi all
A few weeks back some interest was expressed in going to Devek day this August. How bout trying to make a rendezvous, or caravaning, or trying to otherwise get together for something in conjunction with this event? Just an idea that crossed this feeble brain. It usually takes me two days to get there(lotsa cops on I-5, and on 97, so maybe we could all overnite at the same town or something, unless everyone plans on doing the long days drive. Maybe....haven't looked into this really, yet, stop in Willows, California on Friday and get a day at Thunderhill. Friday is their normal "open test and tune" day, I'll look into it, if anyone is interested. Willows is about 4 hours from Deveks. Don Hanson |

Hey Michael,
I'm sorry I don't recall receiving your email. Was this some time ago? I took your email address off my address book sometime ago because my emails to you weren't going through. If you have a new address, send it to me so I can update you on my list. The belt probably needs to be tensioned at a minimum, or replaced. If you don't have any record of the T-belt service, I'd have it replaced along with the water pump. It's a literal time bomb ticking in your engine if the belt goes on you. Not trying to be critical, just want some clarification. The first year for the S4 was 1987. Does your 86.5 (S3) have an S4 engine? The 85 and 86's came with a 32 valve motor, but it is different than the S4 engine. Just curious. Its good to hear from you again Michael. -Adam ---------- From: blueheartmusic <blueheartmusic@...> To: Adam Birnbaum <adamb777@...> Cc: PacNW928@... Re: A day with ProFormance
Adam Birnbaum
Hi Calvin,
I take mine to Larson's. I think I'm the only person on the planet that has had good experiences with them. We will see what happens this next time around, it looks like they have a new service manager. When I had them do work in the past (t-belt/pump, ABS fix, alignment, tranny scheduled service) I made them put in writing that I would be notified if they went more than 10% over quote. I also talked personally with the mechanic before and after any work was done. I think communication is the most important thing. I've heard of others getting dinged by all the local shops, and its mostly when the car is left and there is no talk about what happens if the shop goes over estimate. By law they are supposed to let you know if they more than 10% over, but after the repairs are done, what are going to do, have them remove the parts? Lloyd mentioned Leif at Autoworks Northwest. He has an excellent reputation, but is known for taking awhile to complete work because of his thoroughness and the high demand for his work. He did the pre-purchase inspection on my shark and would be my first choice if I lived in Seattle. When and if Larson's does me wrong, I will seek Leif out. I'm glad to see that you'll be coming out to the drags. If you decide to run your car, let me know. -Adam ---------- From: mmayn43508@... that again( originally bought the car there). The 9o I have i bought atpark place, 27,800 miles real clean and to much premium, but once you have oneyou have to have another, it wqas well documented and alot of the cars are on3rd an 4th owners and pretty trashed, anyway see ya at SIR |
