Whirring Noise - And the winner is!

ADAM BIRNBAUM

Okay everyone,

I posted on sunday that my '88 S4 A/T had picked up a whirring noise. I'm
going to get it verified with the local porsche shop tomorrow, but I think
Geoff Taylor may be a winner. Of his many suggestions, he stated torque
tube bearings. I just got done running the car with the front end in the
air. Crawled underneath, and I swear the noise is coming from the torque
tube. There is definitely a weird resonance thing going on under there. At
first it sounded like it was coming from the bell housing, then the
transaxle, then above the cats. I'd heard that drive train noises could be
elusive, but man this is flat out weird.

So, my local brethren, I'm all ears on torque tube replacement cost
estimates. I would really like to take this on myself (really), but am not
sure if I'm quite up to the task.

I'll post tomorrow after I get the news from the experts.
