Re: Tethering

I just tried a micro usb to the laptop with the tether option in LR. It was only the USB 2.0 port but it worked. Had to hold the cable just right to maintain ?connection at the camera. I am looking at the tetherpro cable with the right angle connector. I may order the cable with the USB-C connector for the laptop side.?

It was good to see something work without a lot of configuration settings having to be made.

The 810 does not have Wi-Fi capability so I am likely looking at a wired option unless there are ?workable options that won’t break the bank so to speak.

What are the experiences of the group with this tethering??
Any recommendations or should I stick to frequent breaks and import the card from the camera?

My workflow is borderline psychotic. ?I wish that was a joke.

1. Import photos into Lightroom Catalog (2010 Mac Pro)
2. Import photos from Lightroom Catalog into Capture One (2021 MacBook Pro)
3. Review, select and adjust photos in Capture One (2021 MacBook Pro)
a. If needed edit in Photoshop
(1) If needed process in Silver Efex Pro
(2) If needed process in Exposure x7
b. If needed process in Exposure x7
4. Import edited photos into Lightroom Catalog (2010 Mac Pro)
5. Export photos (either from Lightroom or Capture One, depending on how I’m using the photos).

For a year now, I’ve been planning to get a good disk storage unit hooked up to the MacBook Pro and move the data over. ?For now I’m mainly using the Mac Pro as a NAS device, and for running software that won’t work on the MacBook Pro.

For Lightroom specifically, I do my organization as Jon has described. ?Prior to upgrading to the MacBook, and upgrading Capture One, I’d been doing most of my work in Lightroom.

If your wish to have a look around & decide if it would be of use, then please feel free to either “Google” the Ephotozine” web directly or maybe follow it via my profile page and have a look at some of my images too?

Re: Zane's workflow

Hi, Zane.

As long as your workflow is only "borderline,"? I think you're in good company.

I'm not nearly as organized / structured as you are. The vast majority of my files are on a very aging Dell XPS desktop with additional drives added internally and in a Sabrent "toaster." A year or so ago, I bought an M1 MacBook Pro, pretty much entry level, to replace an older Dell XPS laptop as a traveler. In principal, all photos get copied from the cameras onto the old Dell desktop, then imported into Lightroom, at which time I eliminate the worst. Problem #1 is that I keep too many. Could you elaborate on your comment that you're using your Mac Pro as a NAS?? A NAS is on my horizon, but my horizon keeps moving.

I always appreciate your thoughts and observations.

Lightroom is 100% non-destructive.? So any changes that? you make are stored in an xmp file along side of the raw file so long as you enable the xmp files, otherwise, it is stored in the catalog.? Either way it is non-destructive.?

As I understand it, Lightroom just saves adjustments in a small file. When you export it then it creates an image file with the adjustments made. This way you can still have the original image for adjustments down the road.?

Others with more experience may correct me.

Flickr can be free or a paid membership.? You get much more storage with paid.? Personally I have been paid for several years, but don’t use it much.

No I’m not on Flickr, I’m not sure if I should be?? Is it free? ?

I’m not at all sure about ephotozine, I’ve not long joined!? The only thing I can think of is to add the URL of my Profile to your favourites.? Maybe easier if I join Flickr ???

What can you and the group tell me about Flickr, please?

Yes Zane, I had forgotten about the file storage, thus that only compounds the issue.

We have very limited file storage. ?When I moved the group over from Yahoo Groups, that used most of the storage that a “Free” group has. ?To move the group, we had to have one year of paid “Premium”, and after that year was up, we shifted down to the “Free” tier. ?Attachments count against the file storage available. ?That coupled with the fact that you have more control with choosing your own site to share photos, are two very valid reasons to not allow attachments. ?Furthermore, I have to agree with Kelly’s reasoning.

?

Most of us have a way to upload photos to the web. ?I use Flickr, Smug-Mug, and occasionally my own web server. ?Personally the solution I recommend to people is Flickr.

Who is the owner as I agree that a list devoted to Nikon should really be sharing images, unless there is a reason not to.

Based on Scott Ditzel’s comment in another thread, I suspect that both of us need to invest in a ring flash, and that would likely give better results than a focusing rail. ?I’m definitely curious about using a ring flash with my “new” 105mm f/2.8G VR Macro.

?

I’m not sure what modern books might give the information, but books like the old “Nikon F Nikkormat Handbook of Photography”, give a lot of info and tables for tubes, and other devices for Macro. ?I believe this includes info on the DOF. ?With the transition to digital, I’ve not really seen that sort of info published anywhere, or perhaps I’m not looking in the right locations.

Thanks Zane.

In researching more and after my recent experience with the macro tubes, I believe I need to invest in a focusing rail as my next step. I’m just amazed at the super shallow depth of field with the 50mm at f/16 with the 36mm tube.?

I have way more tripods than any sane person should.? There are reasons for what I have.? When I was first getting serious with a D300, I picked up the Gitzo G2220 cheap, as it was a display unit (I was looking at Manfrotto tripods when my wife pointed it out).? It made a world of difference.? Everything else has been purchased used, for a fraction of their value, except the Bogen which was given to me.

?

Gitzo G2220 — This one can’t handle a heavy camera/lens, as the legs start to spread, but it’s great for Macro work.? This was my first real tripod (as opposed to using a vintage travel tripod from my Mom’s Yashica 44LM). The legs can be put at basically any angle.

Gitzo G340 — This is now my “general use” tripod, it’s a pain to pack, but I really love this tripod, it can handle just about anything I shoot with.

Gitzo G410 — For 11x14 Camera

Gitzo G1155T — For my Leica M10P

?

A little Bogen tripod for my Rolleiflex.

?

Majestic — No clue on the model, the guy I deal with the most at my favorite local camera store, happened to see me walking out of a competitors store with it, and commented that it could be used to hold up a small car.? I’m not convinced he was joking. It has a Majestic head on it, with a plate for Large Format cameras.? It can easily handle my 11x14 camera.? I’ve taken it out in the field with my 8x10, and that requires a baby stroller to move it and the camera.? The 11x14 can be moved easily in a wagon with the Gitzo G410. ?

?

?

If I’m using Tubes, I’m going to be using a focusing rail.

?

Another option I have, is to use my Nikon D800 on a 4x5 monorail camera, with G-Claron lenses.? This is the option I’m likely to go for extreme Macro’s.? This is actually why I’ve kept the Majestic tripod.? It’s a good base for this type of photography.

While my current tripod allows for the legs to be splayed out, it still may not be able to get down close enough to the subject.? I am thinking I may need an arm on a ball head with a second ball head for the camera to accommodate what I am trying to accomplish. Would replacing the current pan/tilt head with a ball head with an extension arm that has a ball head for the camera be a viable option?

My current tripod is a Slik 300 DX, while not a high dollar tripod it is much sturdier than many of the sub $100 tripods out there. What have others worked with?

Granted someday I’ll need to sink a chunk into one of the better tripods and ball heads.
