call book import not working

When I try to import the FCC database into the callbook, it locks
the computer up. I've tryed it 3 different times and it locked up at
3 different stages of the import.

Success reading freq and mode with Icom

Problem solved -- already!

A HUGE thanks to David Whaley, NT9E, who replied with the suggestion that the problem probably was with the Comm port settings more than with the settings within ACLog itself. Sure enough... I went to Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Ports > COM1 > Port Settings and set it for 19200 BPS, Data bits = 8, Parity = None, Stop bits = 1, and Flow control = None.

Then I went to the ACLog Rig Interface Setup window, set it for Comm Port 1, 19.2 K, Parity = None, Data bits = 8, Stop bits = 1, Connection power = DTR, and Polling rate = 100 ms (any speed works, I think). In the string to read frequency and string to read mode I made sure that the 3rd character was "58", which is the code for the 706MKIIG (the manual for the radio shows the code), and KAZOWIE! Everything worked!

Thanks again, David.

Hello Chuck. Had the same problem with my 706mk 2.
If I remember right I used 4800 N81 with 50 (IC756) in both strings and RTS.
Some of the other Icom codes also worked but fell apart on 50mhz or no mode
reading. I will check again when I get to the home qth.
73, Jim N2NRD.
P.S. I also set the polling rate at .5sec and the radio on "auto baud
detect."

Greetings to the group.
I'm a long-time user of ACLog who has just purchased the cable to connect
my rig so I can read the frequency and mode directly into the log. I've
tried everything I can think of and so far am unsuccessful; I could sure use
some suggestions.

The setup: PC is an older model IBM ThinkPad laptop Pentium II running
Windows XP Professional. Rig is Icom IC706MarkIIG. I have the cable from
W1GEE and it is connected to the serial port of the PC and the remote jack
on the back of the 706.

In the Interface Setup window of ACLog, I have set to Comm Port 1, 19.2
baud (the rig is also set to 19.2), connection power to DTR (I've also tried
RTS). I've set the string to read frequency to "FE FE 58 E0 03 FD" and the
string to read the mode to "FE FE 58 E0 04 FD" (values come from the 706's
manual). Having no idea what the other values should be, I've tried them
all, I think.

The response is always "No Response" in the Frequency window, either "No
Response" or nothing at all in the Mode window, and a running string of
garbage, which changes as I change the tuning dial on the rig, in the
"Unprocessed data returned" window.

Does any other Icom owner have any hints for me?

Thanks,
Chuck, K9PLX

Steven Blary

Chuck,

My radio and manual is packed away at the moment -- I'm operating portable this
evening during the IOTA contest from Hutchinson Island NA-141. So I can't look
up the specifics at the moment. However if my memory is correct all of those
settings seem fine. the actual values of the string data may be off however
the radio ID - 58 seems right. I would confirm that setting in the radio's
menus to be sure but I believe that 58 is the 706's default (I think AClog
defaults to 56) DTR was the proper setting for me as well.

Hopefully you will have it resolved by tomarrow however if you don't let me
know and I'll confirm my settings ...

Good Luck and 73's
Steve Blary, N1XC

P.S. Listen for me on 20 meters SSB for the IOTA contest I should be on the
air by 6pm eastern.

Re: Can't get ACLog to read freq & mode

Hi Ed,

So far, the same Icom string selection has worked with all Icom
rigs. I haven't had a report specifically on the 736 but it should
work. Just select Icom from the rig options.

Chuck, I did some digging through my notes and found a report of
working settings for the IC 706 MK II G with my software.

The settings are:

Baud rate: 19.2K
Parity: None
Data Bits: 8
Stop Bits: 1
Power Selected: DTR (that will depend on your interface)

I hope this helps. Please let me know how you make out.

Thanks for your e-mail.? I have had good reports from other IC706 MarkIIG users so I'm sure it is just a matter of getting the com settings right.? If any Icom users have the specifics for Chuck I'd sure appreciate it if you could pass them along.

antenna tuner.

As a suggestion, Scott it would be nice to have a tune button or
keyboard key (~ perhaps)for tune/touch-up purposes with boatanchor
transmitters or antenna tuners.

Help!

w1ech

I need help with my N3FJP Sweepstakes program. I have not used the
software before.

I recently received the CD, got my password, and loaded it.
It worked fine.

However, for some reason, I recently misplaced the shortcut on my
desktop and thought I had deleted the software, so I tried to REload
it!

That's when the trouble started. I found that I could open the
software and begin playing with it, until I tried to enter a call
worked, and then the CHECK in the second window. I would immediately
get "INVALID SECTION" in the large window below that and nothing else
would function.

I have tried several times to remove the software and reload it, but
must be doing something wrong.

Is there an instruction sheet for the CD?

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Thanks!

Re: CW Parallel Port Schematics

Scott and users:
I have already been using the serial port version (without upgrades)
for several months and it worked very well on the serial port.
When I got the laptop home finally and started to use it with the base
rig, instead of my qrp rigs (Sierra and Norcal 40a) I had to have a
way to use the keyboard for CW too; since I use the serial port
at the house for my external keyboard.
I am using the keyboard as it is easier to enter all my data into the
AC Logger. I also have a mouse hooked up externally and that
facilitates the moving of the cursor faster than using the little button
on my laptop.
So, when this revision for the parallel port came out it was a good
idea to change. I am making up a connector and will report on
the use of that with the serial port in use too.
I work about 99% CW anyway. I get on SSB rarely and then to
work a rare DX station who does not work CW. I work the MARS
nets on SSB and have to have a mike only for those two reasons.
I also have learned in several contests that I can use my paddles
(Mercury) with the rig at the same time I have the keyboard hooked
up to the rig to transmitt CW both ways. That is a good idea for
those of you who have QRP rigs too. Add a plug input for the
paddles as well as the one for the connection to the laptop or
PC so that you can use both for the generation of CW. I rarely use
the keyboard cept for the contests. It is a major help and saves
time and frustration. I also have found that using the keyboard
function with the laptop eliminates the use of a memory keyer
and that is one less thing to put in my backpack to take on the hikes
and trips with the tent and all. It makes it lighter a bit and makes
more room for a couple more snacks.
Thanks again Scott for the new revision and looking forward to the
changes in the upgrade so I can log faster on the AC Logger program.

p.s. a word of advice, make sure you check the polarity of the 2n2222
when you wire it up so that you don't fry it when you apply power and
try to transmitt. OR, keep an extra on hand for the replacement. It is
a very easy mod to make and certainly a lot cheaper to make than to
buy from the people making them. Rad Shack has the parts and it is
very inexpensive to make. Have fun soldering!

Re: CW Parallel Port Schematics

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the good report.

The problem has been for those of us who want to send CW and use the rig interface features with one serial port in our machines. With the CW parallel port upgrade you can send CW via the parallel port and use the rig interface or packet DX spotting features via the serial port at the same time.

CW Parallel Port Schematics

Hi All,

Huel, K4DRQ was kind enough to send along some links he found to build a parallel interface for CW keying:

Several words of caution. The code for the parallel port CW keying enhancement was designed for and tested by using the W1GEE parallel interface (available on my website for anyone who doesn't want to build their own). The W1GEE interface uses pin 17 to send CW and pin 1 for ground. I don't know if the above schematics will need any modification to work properly or not. If you feel adventerous and give either/both of the above schematics a try, please let me know how they work out. I'm looking forward to your comments and feedback.

Hi All,

I wanted to let you know that I have added the following enhancements to
all of the N3FJP Software contesting programs:

- Option for CW keying by the parallel port (in addition to the already
existing serial port)
- ESC key terminates CW (ESC will still clear your fields when CW is not
being transmitted)
- Improved CW timing performance
- CW WPM speed can be specified
- CW word spacing is user modifiable
- CW text being sent displays on the main form
- Addition of prosigns
- Program retrieves system time for UTC offset on startup
- Addition of a utility to send on-the-air code practice
- Items on main list can be copied to the Windows clipboard
- Graph background color can be changed from black to white

In addition, the programs are now uploaded as self-extracting executable
files. That means that you don’t have to unzip the downloaded file
(although you can if you want to). Just double click the exe file using
Windows Explorer and setup will begin automatically. As always, the new
versions are free to registered users.

I will probably wait to send this announcement to the larger
"announcements only" list until Amateur Contact Log is ready, but I wanted
to give you a heads-up and the opportunity for testing and feedback before
we get into the fall contesting season. Please download the new versions,
give them a whirl and let me know what you think. In addition to the
performance upgrades, all of the above enhancements will also be included in
ACLog 2.4 when it is ready.

As always, thanks for your great suggestions, kind thoughts and spreading
the word about my software. I really appreciate it.
