Re: mach 4 and ess - motor tuning
i did all that and rebooted several times will try again right now still the same. there are no buttons to click and i clicked everywhere. i looked everywhere in config for something missing but could not find it. i am going to go over the ess manual one more time and see if i left out a step

the problem is that i printed out the 51 pages of instructions
because i like to keep the shop machine offline.
i went through every step necessary for a basic configuration? i
did not bother with custom stuff yet but looked at the
possibilities
i found a video that addresses the keyboard? and hotkeys
so my only problem is that i can not set the motor steps speed
etc. the entry boxes are greyed out no matter what i do with
checkboxes

The motor tuning page requires that you not only check the enabled motors in the right column, but you also have to click on the Motor0, or whatever, so that it highlights blue, and then the parameter blocks will be editable and the graph will function for that motor.

I’d check my install for you and see if I can figure out where you are going wrong, but my electric has been out since last night around 5:30, and the machine is not on a generator circuit. ? It is a little confusing since you need to set up both pins and signals separately in ESS config, and also need to set things up in Mach4 config. It always takes me a minute or two to figure out what’s up when I need to change or check something in the setup. ?

The turning was uneventful, but when I used the Turn Cycles screen to generate code for the first M14 thread, and tried to run it, it hung up on the G76 line just as the Internal thread had been doing earlier! Then, I realized that I had accidentally generated code for an Internal thread, but, this time, it was different, as the actual Spindle Speed display on the screen was very intermittent, usually staying at “0”, but occasionally flashing the actual measured RPM. This didn’t happen with the installation that I originally reported this problem on. ? So, I thought maybe my lathe Spindle Speed sensor had gotten damaged or something. At this point, I set the machine back to in/min mode, and started the spindle up, and the on-screen Spindle Speed display worked perfectly. Going back into the threading cycle, and in/rev mode, the display was wonky again. ? Then, I remembered that the release notes for the ESS v257 plugin had mentioned something about a new check box to tell the ESS whether or not to report the spindle speed. I found that check box in the ESS setup, and unchecked it. Testing showed the same problem still remained. ? I then looked at the Spindle setting on the ESS setup page, and changed it from PWM to “OB”. ? That did it, the threading cycle now works, whether ID or OD threading. ? I still have the smaller problem of the spindle making the CLUNK when it gets turned on again while it is already on. I went into config and disabled the Spindle ON, Spindle FWD and Spindle REV pins in Mach4. This stuff was all in there because I never disabled it when I went to my Modbus controlled s[pindle. Alas, this made no difference, I still get the Clunk… ? ? ? ? They are working on a coil winder screen and have the first part of it done.
They did a bunch of testing and could not make your issue happen. We have just started working back at the office where we have all the hardware for testing. We are getting the machines ready for release testing now and one of the things that will be tested is your issue. We are doing the best we can in this screwy time.

I need to be at my desk for a bit later today and I am more than
happy to go over this with you.and get it setup. I know you have
been doing this for a long time and I know you shouldn't have any
trouble. I would like to know if we can do anything to make it
better.

Re: help with customizations ?
Funny, you said sticky keys was “some stupid windows "feature" that no one wants”. ? Huh. ? “No, no, some of my best friends are…” ? I’d rather Microsoft focus on that rather than cater to the handful of dumb-arses trying to run CNC on Windows.? Imagine going to a major CNC manufacturer and asking for a Win10 version, the look they’d give you would be implying that your IQ just managed to crawl out of the freezer. ? There are plenty of cheap dedicated CNC controls these days, buy one and get on with life.? I did.? (Smoothieware boards for the 3D printer, laser, mill & lathe if anyone cares.) ? I gave up on Mach after a discussion with the developers who didn’t understand why installing into C:\Mach4 wasn’t the brightest of ideas; that showed they didn’t really get how Windows works. ? My Mill, lathe and CNC router table are all still running M3 on
XP machines. I can't say I've ever had a hiccup of any kind. Then
again as an electronics design engineer to begin with, all my
wiring , controller layouts and etc are well built, shielded, and
I know precisely how every I/O, pinout, software stub etc works.
I'm sure these older boxes will croak sooner or later and will
have to seriously consider M4 at some point. I'm hoping i can skip
a gen and next update of my toys will be M5.?? :-)
I spent 35+ years in a previous life as a factory manufacturing
and Test automation systems design engineer, so building up a Mach
controlled infrastructure was dirt simple for me. Mod'ed screen
layouts, adding macros behind extra screen buttons, and most of
all., extra screen prompts to control the biggest error
mechanism... that analog computer between the operators eye balls
and the keyboard.?? :-)
The evolution of Windows over the years has indeed wrecked havoc
on many situations. As some mentioned, think how much work
corporate insistence on updating (to retain support) their Win
environment effects 100's of automated robotic factory and office
systems and procedures.
These days I work mostly with massive high performance computers.
AI and machine learning. It has only fortified my understanding
that computers are DUMB machines. There is no such thing as AI.
It's just a different decision tree flow. Computers are only as
smart as the programmer that taught them. AI is also even showing
effects of human bigotry and racism. (learning models grab the
most common idioms of the day) you can see the 'loss of
discretion' in most any google search in the results returned???
the loss of human compassion for one another.
Why do they update windows? They need a product to sell. ...can't
stay in business it you're not selling something to support
expansion. Why all the updates?? Fixing the bugs and flat
programming errors from the original releases. Still blows my mind
today...software is the only product in the world you buy but
don't own. If it doesn't work you can't return it, and you're not
allowed to fix it yourself.
why add the features back? in-situ users are not the bulk of the
sales. The younger generations using computers suck up on all the
bells and whistles and just view it as 'that's the way it is' and
'it'll get fixed soon enough' mentality.
sorry... stepping down of the soap box ....

Subject: [MachCNC] mach 4 and ess
I spent hours trying to get mach4 to work with ess. Boy is the configuration a confusing mess.
two things i just can't get to work but i am sure there will be others once i test my lube control and other things.
i think i can live without my customizations at least for a while but i just wanted to see if mach4 is really any better and worth the effort.
I CAN NOT GET MOTOR TUNING TO WORK. i have all pins assigned etc and i can run a test gcode but the steps are totally wrong and need to be changed. in the appropriate place (something like config control motors) i have the familiar motor tuning screen similar to mach3. however the steps speed and accel are greyed out and i can not enter anything. by default all motor checkboxes were checked and i unchecked and checked until i was exhausted. nothing i could do would let me enter the values.
also i can not find anywhere where hotkeys are assigned. i found a tutorial you tube by a woman who sounds very authoritative so i think i might have found the answer but i have viasat internet and videos are blurry pixels at anything other than high res which means i have to wait weeks for vids to load. this is why i seriously shy away from youtube.
we are in the list for starlink and hope to get it soon so we will be in the 20th or is that 21st century like everyone else.
with all the fabulous improvements WTF can't there be a downloadable pdf worth shit? i have a great manual for mach3 and did not have many problems installing or using it other than a few here and there and the bugs which have prompted me to try mach4.
so maybe hotkeys and other kule keyboard stuff will be explained buy the very confident sounding woman if i live long enough to download the high res video
however trying to find out why motor tuning is greyed out could take me into the next century trying to find the answer.

Learn to use Regedit.
You can script things and then create desktop shortcuts to blow

Re: help with customizations ?
i am all in favor of support of the greatest variety of users. i
forget what microsoft call it but features for people with
different needs get my full support. just don't make them the
default. "handicapped" people are more resourceful than non
"handicapped" people (by necessity) and can certainly find what
they need if these features are made available to them
I have been making machines for blind people to use because the
company i work for hires "handicapped" people. I find it very
rewarding to get to understand the perspective and needs of a
person that are very different from mine. My last project was a
bobbin winding machine that talks. It is still being used by
sighted people but I will soon get feedback as to whether I did a
good job or not.
To me, the joy of being a human being is that we are all
different and can enjoy and benefit from these differences.

Re: help with customizations ?
i sure understand, i am an old guy programming since the 70s.
other than a little C forced by programming arduinos, i have not
learned much in the last 10 years. i have written literally
hundreds of programs that i fortunately and just by plain luck
relied on a system that supported all the fucking changes foisted
on us by microsoft. i share these programs mainly with fellow
music collectors of a particular type. i have done (don't laugh)
virtually all of my programming in Perl which has an amazing
number of open source packages. i use a tool that packages my perl
scripts along with the perl interpreter into an exe that will run
on virtually any PC. support is gone but all my programs still
work and if i keep the old IDE working (it works on win 10 64 bit)
and don't try to update anything it all still works. when it stops
i will have to abandon support for 99% of my "customers" microsoft
has threatened to stop allowing these exes to run but hasn't if
they do there will always be perl (it is still used extensively on
servers for all sorts of utility functions) but users will have to
do a lot more work than running an exe.
my programs still run on xp through win 10, just by luck.
i will die before i write a cloud app but i am doing some wifi
web shit because people want to control my arduino programs from
their phone?
once i got mach3 "working" i never updated anything windows
drivers etc unless forced to.
if the bit breaking is really just because smart key or whatever
the fuck it is i will probably not switch to mach4 although
learning how to get if sort of working might be useful when win 11
doesn't support mach3 anymore :) i am rapidly losing my ability to
program because i am dealing with stage 4 cancer and some heavy
duty drugs that really mess with my attention. that is why i asked
for help with customizations. things that used to be real easy are
a challenge now but i refuse to take to the couch and give up. i
always joked that i would write a boot time program that if i
could not pass the test would shoot me in the head. might be time
to take that seriously.
my machine computers are offline and stripped to the core. every
unnecessary (that is more difficult to figure out with win 10)
service is disabled and there is nothing at all in startup. still
apply a lot of the suggestions in the old mach3 guide as to how to
set up your computer.

I have the same problem since I fitted ESS a month or two ago to my Mach3 setup. It happens when I use the high speed jog (Shift Up,Down, Left, Right,PgUp, PgDn). So far it has only happened on the X axis. I thought it might be something like a buffer over-run since it only seemed to happen when I was doing a longish jog. I reduced the repeat key speed on my keyboard to the lowest setting but it still happens on occasion. Thankfully so far no damage has been done since EStop and the limit switches still operate and it normally happens when I'm setting things up when the cutter is raised above the work. I've dug around a bit on the Internet to see if someone else has the same problem, but no luck so far.

What is too high and what if any are the implications of a lower kernel speed?

Is it possible that you have the Kernel speed HZ set to high?

the most annoying thing is that when jogging with the keyboard i use small steps with a single click of the hotkey for an axis and use shift to do a fast move. not very often but occasionally the machine just runs totallyout of control in the jog direction and breaks a carbide bit. i have changed keyboards and am pretty sure it is not a sticky key. will try yet another one.
Jim.
