My Mill, lathe and CNC router table are all still running M3 on
XP machines. I can't say I've ever had a hiccup of any kind. Then
again as an electronics design engineer to begin with, all my
wiring , controller layouts and etc are well built, shielded, and
I know precisely how every I/O, pinout, software stub etc works.
I'm sure these older boxes will croak sooner or later and will
have to seriously consider M4 at some point. I'm hoping i can skip
a gen and next update of my toys will be M5.?? :-)
I spent 35+ years in a previous life as a factory manufacturing
and Test automation systems design engineer, so building up a Mach
controlled infrastructure was dirt simple for me. Mod'ed screen
layouts, adding macros behind extra screen buttons, and most of
all., extra screen prompts to control the biggest error
mechanism... that analog computer between the operators eye balls
and the keyboard.?? :-)
The evolution of Windows over the years has indeed wrecked havoc
on many situations. As some mentioned, think how much work
corporate insistence on updating (to retain support) their Win
environment effects 100's of automated robotic factory and office
systems and procedures.
These days I work mostly with massive high performance computers.
AI and machine learning. It has only fortified my understanding
that computers are DUMB machines. There is no such thing as AI.
It's just a different decision tree flow. Computers are only as
smart as the programmer that taught them. AI is also even showing
effects of human bigotry and racism. (learning models grab the
most common idioms of the day) you can see the 'loss of
discretion' in most any google search in the results returned???
the loss of human compassion for one another.
Why do they update windows? They need a product to sell. ...can't
stay in business it you're not selling something to support
expansion. Why all the updates?? Fixing the bugs and flat
programming errors from the original releases. Still blows my mind
today...software is the only product in the world you buy but
don't own. If it doesn't work you can't return it, and you're not
allowed to fix it yourself.
why add the features back? in-situ users are not the bulk of the
sales. The younger generations using computers suck up on all the
bells and whistles and just view it as 'that's the way it is' and
'it'll get fixed soon enough' mentality.
sorry... stepping down of the soap box ....

Also, Andy at Warp9 provides the absolute BEST support in
this segment. He WILL get you going. Forum there first, then
he will Teamviewer in to your computer if he has to to get you
going. That said, following the steps right down the line in
the link provided, should get you going. The absolute biggest
obstacle with Mach4 is thinking it's Mach3, it ain't, trust
me.
Mach 4 is SOOooo.... much better than Mach3 at running the
machine and getting customized that it's actually stunning.
Keep at it. The end result is worth it.

Yes i downloaded and printed the 51 pages did not see
anything about hotkeys but the youtube looks promising.Maybe
i missed another doc. Can not do many youtubes at high res
with our viasat rip off. Still need to know why motor
settings csn not be entered

Subject: [MachCNC] mach 4 and ess
I spent hours trying to get mach4 to work with ess. Boy is the configuration a confusing mess.
two things i just can't get to work but i am sure there will be others once i test my lube control and other things.
i think i can live without my customizations at least for a while but i just wanted to see if mach4 is really any better and worth the effort.
I CAN NOT GET MOTOR TUNING TO WORK. i have all pins assigned etc and i can run a test gcode but the steps are totally wrong and need to be changed. in the appropriate place (something like config control motors) i have the familiar motor tuning screen similar to mach3. however the steps speed and accel are greyed out and i can not enter anything. by default all motor checkboxes were checked and i unchecked and checked until i was exhausted. nothing i could do would let me enter the values.
also i can not find anywhere where hotkeys are assigned. i found a tutorial you tube by a woman who sounds very authoritative so i think i might have found the answer but i have viasat internet and videos are blurry pixels at anything other than high res which means i have to wait weeks for vids to load. this is why i seriously shy away from youtube.
we are in the list for starlink and hope to get it soon so we will be in the 20th or is that 21st century like everyone else.
with all the fabulous improvements WTF can't there be a downloadable pdf worth shit? i have a great manual for mach3 and did not have many problems installing or using it other than a few here and there and the bugs which have prompted me to try mach4.
so maybe hotkeys and other kule keyboard stuff will be explained buy the very confident sounding woman if i live long enough to download the high res video
however trying to find out why motor tuning is greyed out could take me into the next century trying to find the answer.
