If the USB port is giving grief, why not ditch it and try something like serial over BT or WiFi? Here is a Serial to WiFi gadget built using an esp8266.

It's RF noise from the USB port...the 3.0 ports are much worse. Stick with the 2.0, use an extension USB cable for your GPS, or even better use your phone to stream it's GPS data with GPSD and no need

I installed bvm on a 8GB PI5 and had good luck. Running VARA on WINE will exit on transmit on the PI OS. VARA runs great on bvm. I also tried APRSIS32 and Winlink, they work great. Need to do more

I just did some testing with the BVM. It is not bad at all. It does run decently. A couple of issues * I normally use xrdp to remote into my Pi's. ?I found it more stable than VNC, but with BVM
