Re: Raspi4 USB boot
The pictures below are what my Rig-PI looks like.? I have added the RTC directly to my PI underneath as to not take up any space on the GPIO, and then added the mSATA adapter you see.? It boots with Berryboot on the SD and immediately loads Buster from the SSD after that.? It's very quick, runs directly off the PI with no additional power supplies and it support multiple images.? This should aid in testing.? ?Hope this visual helps.? My next plan is to add a Buck converter so that I can power the whole thing with 12v.? I found one that is about the size of a dime and should fit?underneath??the aluminum heatsink without issue. Cheaha ![]() ![]() |

Paul,?
Before I would do that, can you hook your Pi to an HDMI monitor or TV?? ?If you can they boot up and check your settings. I am like you, not fully understanding Raspberry, routers or the language. But, before I would start all over I would boot up using a monitor instead of doing the VNC connection. Juddie WD8WV? |
Raspberry Pi no longer recognized
Hello, all -
Jason¡¯s intro stated ¡°...?all Raspberry Pi conversation is encouraged...¡±, so this is not exactly about his scripts, but it is about an RPi 4 built using the ¡°Build A Pi.¡± I did my Raspberry Pi build using the ¡°Build a Pi¡± script (after Jason graciously helped me and put me on the right path) and it installed...flawlessly. For a few weeks I could access it via my Mac or my iPad using?VNC Viewer. Last night...nothing. An app I have for finding IP addresses can¡¯t detect the Raspberry Pi¡¯s WiFi. When plugged in to the router via the Cat 5 cable? Nothing. It¡¯s detected nowhere. At Jason¡¯s suggestion I checked to see if my router¡¯s IP address had changed, but nope. I¡¯m not well versed in Linux, routers, etc. I can follow directions and slowly learn, but this one¡¯s over my head. I¡¯m about ready to reformat the SD card and start all over, but before I do, I wonder if anyone has had something similar happen. 73, Paul (N1HOB) |
Re: Raspi4 USB boot
I have not had a usb power problem with my 3b (or 4b). ? How are you powering the pi3? ?It sounds like you my be powering via USB. ?If so, ?make sure that your usb power source is not limiting the power. ?Many cheap 12V cig plugs put only ?1-2 amps at 5V. ??
Regarding use of the PowerBoard, I purchased one for my pi4b and I not keen on it. ?Instead I use ?the Connected?Type-C Right Angle Step-Down Power Converter. ?While this works great, it has a huge advantage in that one can use a standard pi4b case, heat sinks, and case fan. ? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B086KTGRH1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 |
Re: Raspi4 USB boot
Hey.? I have been using an SSD with my PI for awhile now.? Even though the foundation is working on native USB boot, I would still suggest you checkout Berryboot.? It offers several advantages (multiple OS, image snapshots-ie backups, etc).? It really is the best of both worlds.? I'll snap a picture of my PI soon and post it here.? It's using mSATA based SSD (much more reliable than a flash drive).? Very quick. Have you tried loading berry boot and then running Build-a-Pi? -- 73, de KM4ACK

I found this on amazon, and even better it is run off 12 V? may be enough to? power the GPS as well as the thumb drive. ?
failing that, a powered USB hub should work.
good luck de KD4SEV

Raspi4 USB boot
The Raspi foundation now is testing the ability to boot from USB instead of the SD card.? After a recent Video that Jason posted, I ordered a few 256gig USB drives. (Wait til the wife sees those! This may be my one and only post here!)? I am planning Maybe not right away, but to set on of my pi4's up to boot from the USB as apposed to the SD card and then use the latest Build a Pi script to set up one of the new boards? for my raadio.. One thing I found is that with the 3, there is not enough power to the USB ports for me to run the GPS using even a 6inch USB cord to power it. With the setup I am working on, it would be a big help to be able to extent the GPS away from the case a few inches.
Has anyone tried to boot from USB with the 4 yet?? |
