Re: Forester Pass
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThanks all.?I just got down from the high sierra. We ran into thunderstorms for the first four days. We got rained on at Kearsarge lakes on Monday. Most people in my group got soaked.? Tuesday, thunder started at 11am, so we halted at Charlotte lake. Major thunder in the afternoon.? We should have crossed Forester on Wednesday, but given the forecast, we decided to change course and went over Glen Pass to Rae lakes. Again, got rained on in the evening.? We day hikes to 60 lakes basin on Thursday and made it before it rained again.? It finally cleared yesterday, we made our way back to Onion valley after a stop in Kearsarge lakes.? Last year, hurricane Hillary happened when I attempted this section :).? I will try again next year.? On Jul 23, 2024, at 6:41?PM, WanderingJim via groups.io <jimjmt2020@...> wrote:

Re: San Joaquin crossing
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýBear in mind this is secondhand news! But the FB JMT group is reporting many people crossing. The location generally reported is ~0.4 miles downstream of the bridge, which is *north* of the (former) bridge (just clarifying, as there seems to be some confusion in other posts about which direction the river flows - northward - and which direction is downstream - north). However, use your best judgement in the day - where the river gets wider, it is also shallower. Generally speaking, flow tends to be lowest in the morning as snowmelt increases as the temps rise during the day. If you see stormy conditions to the south of the crossing, keep a careful eye on flows in the river - there are two large watersheds that drain into the SJ and flows could swell quickly if its storming up catchment (or possibly even with a slight delay as the storm pulse works its way downstream). thank you so much for that! so not those 0,4 miles before but after? do you happen to know at what time it is best? before 11 AM or even before 8? Am So., 21. Mule resupply reserved for Charlotte Lake on August 15.
We have 3 participating now. I think we can add 2 or maybe more (the 3 of us are only shipping 4 or 5-day resupplies).
?
We're splitting the total cost, which is $726 plus another $50 for each additional person (of which I've already paid $726). You can contact me before July 25 if you like to share in the resupply. Or contact Danica Berner directly (see contact info at ; phone works better than email). They can add you to the group and discount your price accordingly. |
Bishop Pass Permit 9/4/24
I cancelled a Bishop Pass permit for one on September 4 a few minutes ago. It has not appeared as available yet. I think that the system might release it at 10 am Eastern/7 am Pacific. Since the JMT trailheads are booked up for that date, I thought I'd post here hoping that someone who can use it grabs the permit when it shows up. Of course, there is another big opportunity for permits when the two week window arrives and Inyo releases what were formerly called "walk up" permits.? |

Re: glen pass
Ditto on 60 Lakes Basin, a wonderful, uncrowded area. But it does take some extra time to get in there.? I met a packer on the way
going in near Fin Dome and no one else for 2 days. Dragon Lake is a short slog up from upper Rae Lake. Good fishing, but I don't remember what the availability of campsites was.? The few visitors seem to just dayhike in. Pete On Mon, Jul 15, 2024 at 4:17?PM John Girot via <johnnyg72=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: glen pass
When I did the JMT in 2020, we took a zero day pretty deep into Sixty Lakes Basin. Tons of options back there. We even saw some Bighorn sheep. Other options include Dragon Lake and less off the beaten path, Charlotte Lake. Happy trails! On Mon, Jul 15, 2024 at 12:49?PM kathy doody via <kadoody=[email protected]> wrote: Hi friends! |
