Re: sturdiest tortilla chips backpacker and guacamole

I see avocado in your black bean recipe, which is wonderful for home use.?
However, I've not had success dehydrating avocados, and because of the high fat content, every dehydrating book I've consulted exclaims that avocado should not be dried.?
Does this actually work for you?? What issues, concerns, and problems have you experienced drying avocado?

If you’re transferring to/from YARTS and ESTA in Lee Vining, note that there’s a short walk to connect the stops. YARTS stops on 120 at the intersection ; ESTA stops on 395 in town.?

I know the author of that book (Backpack Gourmet.) Her husband was my accountant. They have hiked all over the world. She has tempted me with some of her recipes, but alas I have never made any. I don't have the time, I tell myself. She says otherwise.

They always eat like gourmets when hiking...

5 cloves garlic
2 scallions
15 oz black beans, rinsed and drained
1 ripe avocado, peeled and pitted
3 ripe tomatoes, chopped
juice of 1 fresh lime (2 Tablespoons)
1/2 t chili powder 1/4 t salt.?

Actually I replace tomatoes with my favorite salsa (Safeway Southwest Style Hot). When I use salsa I skip the chili
I sometimes add a couple of ears' worth of corn
Add cumin (lots)
Add Olive oil
Add cilantro

Wooze it up in the food processor until it's paste like
Dry on parchment paper
Break up dried hunks (sometimes in food processor)

Recipes says to take 2 oz (dry) servings.? I find this about right.?

To make home made tortilla chips cut thick tortillas (Trader Joe's are too thin) into 6 pie pieces, spray of both sides with olive oil, salt.? Toast at 350 until crisp.?

Another trick for lunches is cutting bagels cross wise (so you produce little rounds) spray with olive oil, salt, toast at 350 until they are crispy.? Very good with dried hummus.?

Re: sturdiest tortilla chips

Do you want to share your recipe for the black bean salsa?

I like dehydrated hummus(Outdoor Herbivore) and tortillas for lunch, but more variety would be nice.? ?I find Mission whole wheat tortillas stay fresh for a long time.? I even mailed them in my resupply and they were fine.? They are pretty close to BV500 diameter too!

Re: PCT Section G & H Trek & Rae Lakes Campsites

Thanks. That's what I thought, but it's nice to get confirmation.
?
Anyone have a favorite shuttle driver who's reliable that they could recommend? I'm thinking it might be easier to just take a shuttle ride from my Jeep to Onion Valley thank dealing with a bus and local shuttle from Independence.

Re: PCT Section G & H Trek & Rae Lakes Campsites

Scroll down on the landing page, then scroll right on the maps to the second one.? Park downhill from Area B on Minaret Vista Road, ski hill side.? Make sure your car is very clean from a bear standpoint - no smells, no food, no coolers.

Re: PCT Section G & H Trek & Rae Lakes Campsites

I’ve always parked at the Mammoth Mountain Ski area designated for overnight parking!

I think the parking along the road near Mammoth Mountain isn't restricted to long term parking, but not sure about other options in Mammoth.

PCT Section G & H Trek & Rae Lakes Campsites

So, in late June I started an epic PCT Section G and H NOBO trek. Didn't quite have the stamina and willpower to do the whole thing (going past Kearsarge Pass was always a long shot from the very beginning of planning, but I kept it on the schedule since... what the heck, it's there). BUT am planning on hitting the trail again next weekend from Onion Valley.
?
Only have the first 6 days for the early part of the trek written up so far, but you can find how I did from Walker Pass to Kennedy Meadows and if I survived or not (no spoilers :) ). Don't think I'll have time to write up ALL of the rest of the days before I hit the trail again, but maybe I'll have some time this weekend to do some of the days.

?
I actually had my NOBO daily mileage and campsite wish list written up within a couple months of finishing the JMT SOBO in 2020, so just had to tweak it.
?
Unfortunately, I don't know if I'll be able to stop at Rae lakes. Since I've taken a Zero Month instead just a Zero day or two, I'm going to have to get re-acclimatized to the elevation (probably at a Mammoth hotel). So, may have to stop before Glen Pass (or maybe even Kearsarge Lakes to start with a short day and acclimatize more there) to camp the first night if I can't push to Rae lakes on the first day (12-13 miles for my first day cold start on the trail is a bit long for me).
?
But I still wanted to ask here about people's favorite Rae Lakes campsites and why they are their favorites in case I do make it there for a night.

Re: good freeze dried food sources

I second PackIt Gourmet; they're a small family business based in Austin. They've been so friendly, and the quality has been consistent over the past 10 years that I've bought from them. Their broccoli is more chunky and less stringy than other freeze-dried brands. I always get that and spinach, and freeze-dried chicken.
?
Also their prepared meals can be excellent; try the Austintatious Tortilla Soup!

Re: Reds Meadow/Mammoth Exit NOBO

Yeah, I'm glad I started in late June from Walker Pass to get through the Kennedy Meadows area before that fire erupted.
?
I may have seen the early stages of that fire from the top of Mount Whitney. There was a smoke plume from that general area when I was at the summit.
?
Exited at Onion valley, but hoping to get back on the JMT/PCT NOBO from there after a little rest, recuperation, work, and gear repairs. Hope fire and weather permits.

Re: Reds Meadow/Mammoth Exit NOBO

Duck pass trail, south of Reds maybe 10 or 12 miles.

Re: Reds Meadow/Mammoth Exit NOBO

Mammoth Trail, Red Cones or Duck Pass.?

Re: Reds Meadow/Mammoth Exit NOBO

Exit at Reds and take the Mammoth Pass Trail from there to Horseshoe Lake, where you can pick up the shuttle into town.
