? Bear in mind this is secondhand news! But the FB JMT group is reporting many people crossing. The location generally reported is ~0.4 miles downstream of the bridge, which is *north* of the (former) bridge (just clarifying, as there seems to be some confusion in other posts about which direction the river flows - northward - and which direction is downstream - north). However, use your best judgement in the day - where the river gets wider, it is also shallower.
Generally speaking, flow tends to be lowest in the morning as snowmelt increases as the temps rise during the day. If you see stormy conditions to the south of the crossing, keep a careful eye on flows in the river - there are two large watersheds that drain into the SJ and flows could swell quickly if its storming up catchment (or possibly even with a slight delay as the storm pulse works its way downstream). San Joaquin versus up and over
Just spoke to rangers and my piute pass permit only allows the up and over route or crossing San Joaquin near out bridge. Any advice on which to do. For the up and over route where can I find details on it? Best, Leslie

Re: Bishop Pass Permit 9/4/24
Cancelled permits are usually released soon after the user cancels them, e.g. the same day, but timing isn't always easy to pin down.? Inga

There are 4 numbers on the guidance she provides in the files on the Facebook “John Muir Trail Hikers” website,? Three of them are good.? I generally get thru on the first or second try. Joe ?

Re: Bishop Pass Permit 9/4/24
Are they released randomly over the next day or longer? I'm always interested in how the process works under the hood.
|
Mule resupply reserved for Charlotte Lake on August 15.
We have 3 participating now. I think we can add 2 or maybe more (the 3 of us are only shipping 4 or 5-day resupplies).
?
We're splitting the total cost, which is $726 plus another $50 for each additional person (of which I've already paid $726). You can contact me before July 25 if you like to share in the resupply. Or contact Danica Berner directly (see contact info at ; phone works better than email). They can add you to the group and discount your price accordingly.

Does anybody have any recent conditions of Forester Pass? Is all the snow gone by now?
|
Bishop Pass Permit 9/4/24
I cancelled a Bishop Pass permit for one on September 4 a few minutes ago. It has not appeared as available yet. I think that the system might release it at 10 am Eastern/7 am Pacific. Since the JMT trailheads are booked up for that date, I thought I'd post here hoping that someone who can use it grabs the permit when it shows up. Of course, there is another big opportunity for permits when the two week window arrives and Inyo releases what were formerly called "walk up" permits.?

We were at Charlotte Lake over the holiday weekend and day-hiked to Glenn Pass on the 5th.
Zero snow on the south side, one small snow field on the north side, easily crossed without any special gear.
All that should be completely gone by now.

Hi friends!
I am planning a short 5 day trip into Rae Lakes basin from Kearsarge pass and was wondering what the latest conditions were on Glen Pass?
also, was wondering if there’s any sweet camping spots in the Rae Lakes area off the beaten path..
Thank you!!

Hello Anand,
?
My son and I just finished this section NOBO a week ago on the 8th of July.? As noted by Frank all crossing were fairly low key.? The only crossings where we got our feet wet were at Tyndal and Whitney Creek. Both were inconsequential at the time of our crossing.? Tyndal we did with a PCTer and she didn’t barefoot.? I opted to do it with shoes but without socks or insoles.? After crossing in hindsight I also would have done it barefoot it was that easy and water very clear to negotiate rocks.? Whitney was barefoot as it’s basically a swimming hole where almost all there at the time of our crossing took the opportunity to do just that, soak feet, take a dip and air dry relaxing in the shade. ? All other crossings, Wallace, Wright and Rock Creek had logs to cross approximately 30 yards up stream with very minor bushwacks to deal with.? If you’re uncomfortable with any of the logs all the crossing were very manageable.? Rock Creek was no more than upper calf deep judging by watching others who opted to go through the water, I’m 5’9” for reference.? Wallace and Wright it was only a matter of not wanting to get feet wet as the rock hops were covered by just a few inches of moving water. Of course the monsoon activity we’re seeing now can change things and conditions may change.
Best of luck and hope you have an excellent trip!
?
Cheers,
Glenn
Hi David
?
I will, thank you.? Two years ago, while climbing up from Virginia Lakes to Squaw Lakes, we were trying to beat a thunderstorm and I rushed past Tully Hole and not taking it all in. I regret it.?

There is another heat wave till this Friday, so I expect the streams to be full, so I am concerned.?

I am starting here:?

I have to cross Bubbs Creek (twice), Tyndall Creek, Wallace Creek, Wright Creek, Bullfrog lake outlet and of course, Whitney Creek (I vividly remember crossing this during HST). (Am I missing?a crossing)?

Any guidance would be appreciated.
