Hello and the inevitable question

Hi to all. I am EI7CLB and have recently been experimenting with HamPi and Jason, KM4ACK's 'Build-a-Pi'. I have been waiting to install HamPC on the best computer I have. It has 8GB of RAM and a 2.7GHz octocore processor. It would be wonderful to try HamPC, and all it appears to offer, on this machine, which was gifted to me by my Brother - who I am still trying to persuade to get his ticket.?

I d'l'd the img and the img.xz that came with it. I am ready to go but I really will need a bit of help - 'Is there a guide?' - I suppose is the inevitable question. The machine is currently running Linux Mint. The 64GB card arrived in the post about 20 minutes ago. I SO want this to work. The best of days to you all. 73, Tryg

Wow been trying for over an hour to get sync installed and running. Hope it is worth the trouble. The problem is they don't really support Linux so their is no user interface. All configuration is command line. Some what confusing docs. eg. download the setup file but no indication of where to get the setup file.

Another cup of coffee and try again.

Hi all,

There was much discussion recently about the image available on sourceforge and how it didn't work for everybody, especially in VMs. I fixed the image using the following procedure. I did it on MacOS - if you want to replicate it on Windows please modify the commands according to your toolset.
1. Download original image and unpack.
2. Add 1MB to the image using dd if=/dev/zero? bs=1m count=1 >> HamPC_v3.0.1b1.img
3. Create VMDK file for VirtualBox mapping the raw image as disk (which allows it to be used in VBox):?VBoxManage internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename hampc.vmdk -rawdisk /full/path/to/HamPC_v3.0.1b1.img
4. Register the VMDK in VirtualBox in File -> Virtual Media Manager -> Add (find your VMDK)
5. Create VirtualMachine for Linux 64bit, 4GB of RAM, 4 processors, no disk. Remember to enable EFI for it.
6. Attach the VMDK.
7. Download and attach Ubuntu 22.04 LiveCD.
8. Boot from CD.
9. Add repository "universe", update repositories index with apt update, install testdisk package.
10. Use testdisk to find and fix issues with the disk GPT table. Commit changes. Check partitions with fsck.
11. Reboot and enjoy your new HamPC working on a VM...

or download the fixed image file from shared folder under ?and use it to replicate steps 3-6 from above.

Build problem

Hi!

I'm trying to build the HamPC by myself with various degree of success... ;)?
One problem I have now is the?jtdx-2.2.0-rc155_i386.deb file missing and I cannot find it anywhere on the Internet.

@Dave, do you maybe have it smewhere?

Thanks in advance!

Re: no OS found

yup the computer supports EFI
infact it has Bullseye running on it
but have been having a fight with WSJTX and the sound system
so since I wanted to give HamPc a workout I went down the SSD path
right now I am going to slap Xubuntu 22.10 on it and see if WSJTX will complain about the most current OS
available

Re: no OS found

If computer you are using is an older one (like more than 12 years maybe) then there's possibility that it does not support EFI. Try converting the GPT to MBR, e.g.??
A pic is worth 1000 words, so any screen would be helpful ;)

The EFI part is what mine seems to be missing.? I've looked all over in the BIOS and don't find it.

I'm not super strong with making Linux images either, but I'll be happy to test out stuff.??

Again, thanks for all your excellent work on all your HamPi/PC/Quadra stuff Dave.? Everything is always beta, but that's just the spirit of Ham radio anyways!??? :-)

Still loving the HamPi and playing with the new Quadra version. I haven't hooked up a radio yet to check for the noise issue from the power supply yet.

8GB and 16G cards are still out there. Amazon has plenty to choose from.

Hi Pawel,

Yes I got the same error previously. I haven’t been able to catch up today. Thank you for sharing the video. I will follow through and post updates. Most likely I will try the qemu-img conversion as well.

Thank you both for the efforts!

Re: HamPC with VirtualBox

Why not use a VM as in my suggestion? Any reasons against it?

Re: HamPC with VirtualBox

I think that's the mistaken assumption I made -- that the end of the partition was the end of the disk... Sheesh, how am I supposed to deal with this? I make the image on a 128GB SSD and can't go distributing an image that's 128GB large... Maybe I need to go find a 16GB SSD (if such a thing still exists)?

Hi!

I'd seem that you dd'ing until the end of sdX2 and not the whole disk may be the issue here. As far as I know the backup GPT partition table is in the last sector of the DISK and you may be loosing it. You can try your proposed approach with the whole disk dump and it may fix the issue here.

One quick question. Why aren't you using a virtual machine for the whole process of creating the disk image? It would speed things up as for example you could create a VMDK of even raw disk image of 32GB in size and run the whole bunch Ansible?scripts on it and later just distribute the vm disk image without the whole workload od dd'ind the disk.

I'm glad you were able to narrow the problem down to specific steps. In case I can help on something just let me know and we can setup another topic or you can contact me directly.

Best regards!
PJ
