Have you looked at the possibility of moving the mounting holes of the U bracket the capacitor is mounted. Or making a new bracket to align the shafts.

How about a piece of 1/2 plastic rod, drill a 1/4" hole down the middle, slice off a couple sections and sleeve them on to the two shafts. Then run an O ring as a belt like Heathkit did on the HW 101?

Oh, I think the line you see going across the rotor is the edge of the plating. Only half of the rotor and stator are plated. The stator is plated on the bottom. The rotor is plated on the inside surface. Sometimes you can clean the inside surfaces and restore it.

Good Morning,

?

Thought I would add my 2 cents worth...

?

Since it looks like there is a shaft extender on the cap, that does give you a little bit of room to work with.

?

If it were me, I would look for a solution using some small nylon gears. If you use 2 gears, you are right, the cap will work backwards. If, you add an idler gear between the gears (3 gear solution), the cap will rotate in the correct direction. Use the gears with the same number of teeth on the front panel shaft and the capacitor shaft to keep the rotation the same. The number of teeth on the idler gear doesn't matter as long as the mesh with the other gears is good.

?

Also, on rebuilding the original cap. A few years back, I picked up a ball-bearing assortment to use if I ever needed to repair an existing cap (probably from Amazon). Fortunately, this was not necessary for me, so I can't comment on the success potential.

Even better, I like the idea of two small pulleys and either a dial cord or "o" ring ala Heathkit HW or SB series.

I would be happy to send you two small heathkit pulleys that fit a 1/4 in shaft if you would like.?

Thanks Bob.??

I already purchased the ball bearings and installed them into the race. The cap has warped plates and makes heavy contact.? There is no way I can think of to repair it. I spent hours attempting to align them.? The entire assembly is kicked over and at least 10 plates rub. I may have to revisit this and see if I can somehow get this thing apart and try to repair it.??

I thought of gears and that was my first attempt.? Problem is, There is NO source for???inch bore gears.? I have searched for hours.? All websites.? The only ones I found are at McMaster Carr and they have the wrong bore and are $30!! each.? I would need to get several sizes and maybe drill them but it would be hundreds of dollars for an experiment.

The only???inch shaft gears I did find are, get this, $70 to $200 each!!??

There is probably something I can find and repurpose for a reasonable price. I am still looking.

Good Morning,

Thought I would add my 2 cents worth...

Since it looks like there is a shaft extender on the cap, that does give you a little bit of room to work with.

Also, on rebuilding the original cap. A few years back, I picked up a ball-bearing assortment to use if I ever needed to repair an existing cap (probably from Amazon). Fortunately, this was not necessary for me, so I can't comment on the success potential.

Re: Sx100 question on 50.5 kc alignment

Good choice in VTVMs, and the input probe mod.
I like the Heathkit VTVM "DSB" line, in fact I was looking for an IM-28 when I was shopping for a VTVM. BTW...?Bob Eckweiler (AF6C)?wrote a very informative review/manual on the Heathkit VTVM line. I can send it directly to you if you wish, or just Google it.
I ended up going with the "Simpson 312" VTVM because it has huge meter face, the needle swing is 7.5 inches. Talk about sensitivity.? Beside, Simpson has been making meters forever, so they should know what they are doing and parts are plentiful.

Re: Sx100 question on 50.5 kc alignment

Your Heathkit IG-5282 audio signal generator is very basic with limited attenuation ability. Suggest you read Phil¡¯s Old Radios post at about ¡°Aligning the Receiver¡± for a Hallicrafters with a 50 kHz IF. ?His audio generator put out such a large signal that he observed a -50 volts at Test Point B! His solution was a potentiometer to reduce the generator output to a more manageable level. Don¡¯t forget an isolation capacitor (say 0.05 mfd.) between your signal generator with the added attenuation pot (say 500 K ohm) and Test Point A (terminal 1 on T2 not T1).

How about a piece of 1/2 plastic rod, drill a 1/4" hole down the middle, slice off a couple sections and sleeve them on to the two shafts. Then run an O ring as a belt like Heathkit did on the HW 101?

NO???inch.? They would have to be machined out.? Also NO double joints. So I would have to run two back-to-back to make the JOG. Remember, the shaft is 1 inch DOWN and about an inch OVER.? If I had those in hand I might be able to make something work tho!

How about these? You would still need your insulated coupling in the string.?

Should be enough room in the final cage for a switch and a couple of caps. I'll keep my eyes open for that air variable load cap.? ?73 dave
