Re: 3 gang Variable cap needed

Did all the moveable plates shift sideways, causing the gap in one direction to be much smaller than the other?? If yes, can you momentarily make the gap even by tugging (hard) on the shaft?? I had this problem in an antenna tuner.

Are there any other models that use the same cap? I have a HT-37 complete that I will likely part out, as I can't find any one that pill pay $100 for it.
Maybe they use the same cap?

If it were me, I would look for a solution using some small nylon gears. If you use 2 gears, you are right, the cap will work backwards. If, you add an idler gear between the gears (3 gear solution), the cap will rotate in the correct direction. Use the gears with the same number of teeth on the front panel shaft and the capacitor shaft to keep the rotation the same. The number of teeth on the idler gear doesn't matter as long as the mesh with the other gears is good.

?

Also, on rebuilding the original cap. A few years back, I picked up a ball-bearing assortment to use if I ever needed to repair an existing cap (probably from Amazon). Fortunately, this was not necessary for me, so I can't comment on the success potential.

Re: Sx100 question on 50.5 kc alignment

Good choice in VTVMs, and the input probe mod.
I like the Heathkit VTVM "DSB" line, in fact I was looking for an IM-28 when I was shopping for a VTVM. BTW...?Bob Eckweiler (AF6C)?wrote a very informative review/manual on the Heathkit VTVM line. I can send it directly to you if you wish, or just Google it.
I ended up going with the "Simpson 312" VTVM because it has huge meter face, the needle swing is 7.5 inches. Talk about sensitivity.? Beside, Simpson has been making meters forever, so they should know what they are doing and parts are plentiful.

Re: Sx100 question on 50.5 kc alignment

Your Heathkit IG-5282 audio signal generator is very basic with limited attenuation ability. Suggest you read Phil’s Old Radios post at about “Aligning the Receiver” for a Hallicrafters with a 50 kHz IF. ?His audio generator put out such a large signal that he observed a -50 volts at Test Point B! His solution was a potentiometer to reduce the generator output to a more manageable level. Don’t forget an isolation capacitor (say 0.05 mfd.) between your signal generator with the added attenuation pot (say 500 K ohm) and Test Point A (terminal 1 on T2 not T1).

Good Morning,

Thought I would add my 2 cents worth...

Since it looks like there is a shaft extender on the cap, that does give you a little bit of room to work with.

Also, on rebuilding the original cap. A few years back, I picked up a ball-bearing assortment to use if I ever needed to repair an existing cap (probably from Amazon). Fortunately, this was not necessary for me, so I can't comment on the success potential.

How about these? You would still need your insulated coupling in the string.?

Good Morning,

Thought I would add my 2 cents worth...

Since it looks like there is a shaft extender on the cap, that does give you a little bit of room to work with.

Also, on rebuilding the original cap. A few years back, I picked up a ball-bearing assortment to use if I ever needed to repair an existing cap (probably from Amazon). Fortunately, this was not necessary for me, so I can't comment on the success potential.

Do you have room for a couple of these with a small 1/4 shaft connecting 2 back to back?

From Amazon. There are several different styles available. Search under motor drive couplings

Re: Sx100 question on 50.5 kc alignment

If you use your probe at x1 then there is a greater chance that you will load the signal down because the probe has lower impedance (usually 1M ohm), and you'll make an error in the measurement. However, the same probe in x10 mode will have less of an impact on your signal because the impedance, will be 10M Ohm. You definitely want to use it in x10 position, and in doing so, the scale on the oscilloscope channel will change by x10. If you're using a scope that can sense and recognize a x10 probe, then it will usually? automatically change the scale for you. In my case, my Tekronix 465 does not recognize a x10 probe. However, the channel scale dial does have an indicator for 1x & x10 scale position pointers. I just have to remember to use the correct pointer, or just multiply the scale by 10.? ?
What VTVM do you have?? ?

Those that have more experience with testing these points in the SX100 or any other radio that normally uses a VTVM to check DC voltage.....can I do this with my oscilloscope?
My probe is a 1x & 10x. Could I not use it at 1x to measure this voltage coming off test point B in the SX100?
Looking to get around 1 vdc here when tuning the 50.5 IFs.
If I am thinking wrong, please let me know.
Just thinking this would be more stable than my vtvm.

? Mark, I talk to some friends most days on 3950. We vacate at 8am due to another net that starts at 8am on 3952. They start regardless if we're still there on 3950 or not. 99% of the time we're gone at 8am but once in a while we need an additional 30 seconds to finish something. That happened this morning. Those guys didn't care and started at 3952 so they QRMed us on 3950 We only?needed an additional 30 fuckin' seconds! And get this, it's some fuckin' prayer net. So they're all into prayer and god but still purposely QRM others. BTW as you know, it's against?FCC rules!

I sent the net control an email (not the first time BTW). Here's a copy of it...

??Good morning Bruce, Mark,

I'm from the group on 3950. I was wondering why you guys can't give us just 30 seconds for us to finish something? You guys seem to start at 12:00Z regardless if it will QRM anyone. Why? 99% of the time we make sure we vacate 3950 at 12:00Z/8:00am eastern but once in a while we need a few extra seconds. Since we do our best to show you some consideration, how about a little in return?

How about it guys?
