Dear Fremont-Freecycle of California Member,
?
Thanks for being a part of the Freecycle Network. We're changing the world one gift at a time!
?
If you're new to the group or want a quick refresher on making the most of Fremont Freecycle, please read on!
?
This Freecycle group matches people who have things they need to get rid of with people who can use them. Our sole goal is to keep usable items out of landfills.? By using what we already have on this earth, we reduce consumerism, manufacture fewer goods, and lessen the impact on the earth. Another benefit of using Freecycle is that it encourages us to get rid of junk that we no longer need and promote community involvement in the process. Free your inner pack rat!
?
Fremont Freecycle of?California is part of the international Freecycle movement, which began in Tucson, AZ on May 1st, 2003 and now boasts thousands of groups all over the world. Please help this group grow by spreading the word! We all personally know lots of great people in our community who would love this idea.
?
?
Please note that the sole purpose of this group is to keep good, usable, tangible items out of the landfill.? Postings for any other purpose is not allowed.
?
Fremont Freecycle of California Rules & Etiquette: Updated January 2018
?
Note that these rules are setup to provide clear communications (We are a message board;? communications is what we do!)? in support of the Freecycle movement, and to provide the members with guidance for simpler communications leading to safer exchanges.
?
1) KEEP IT FREE, LEGAL & APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AGES:
?
This is our primary rule, and it's a pretty easy one at that: The following are not allowed:
- pornography
- alcohol
- tobacco
- drugs (of any kind, including all medicines, vitamins, creams, etc.)
- firearms or other weapons or ammunition
- No advertising your yard sale or fundraiser, because you're looking for money.
- Signatures must be appropriate for all ages, and contain no business or other solicitations.
?
2) SUBJECT LINE OF YOUR POSTS: We now require Hashtag/post type? So #? no space, then Post type (OFFER, WANTED,? etc.)? for Example:? #OFFER. Item. We use? these phrases to make it easy for others to sort through messages. (While a general location is STRONGLY recommended in the subject line or the body of the posting.specific addresses or locations are NEVER allowed)
?
- ?#OFFER? Item? (Mention a major cross street or township name in the body of your post, i.e. you could add "Niles" in the subject line if that is where you are.)
- ?#TAKEN? Item? (Used when your OFFER item is pending, spoken for, or picked up.? Please do not use pending, pending PU, spoken for, or variants in the subject line )
- ?#WANTED? Item?? (Please use this post sparingly and don't offer money for it.)
- ?#RECEIVED? Item?? (Used ONLY after your WANTED post is fulfilled.)
- Having issues with bounced posts?? do not add a colon or other character to the end of the hashtag!? Use a space so it stands alone. #OFFER:? is not a recognizable Hashtag with the Colon.
NO,? we DO NOT accept a hash tag at each end of the of the subject line!
?
When using “Reply” or "Forward” to post, particularly for taken posts, be sure to remove the old message, as this can confuse people into thinking the item is still being offered.? In the subject line, remove the Re: (reply) as this will make people think it is a reply to them for the item.? It is all about clear and easy to follow communications so spend the extra half minute or less to keep things clear.
?
About WANTED postings:
?
Remember that Freecycle is about keeping usable things out of the landfills.?
- It is not, and never was, intended as a personal shopping forum, nor is it a "make a wish" foundation.? It is a group of like minded local people (as well as worldwide), all in agreement that in our consumer society, we throw too much away.
- So request your wanted item, but do so responsibly!? Wanted posts are intended to provide a tickler to remind people about that item collecting dust sitting out of sight and out of mind that someone else may be able to make use of.
?
Out of consideration for all members, no more than 5 WANTED requests per month are allowed, including repeated requests for an item. Repeat requests should not be posted more often than every 7 days, or twice a month maximum. Please don't ask for items that would not ordinarily be discarded in the trash or donated to a thrift store.? Certain Items we simply won't approve until we start seeing them being offered.? (Examples:? Smart Phones, Digital SLR cameras, other "latest' technology, Software versions that are still at the current release,? etc.)
?
Due to past abuses for wanted posts per month, , we have limited members accounts to one account per person.?
?
Fremont Freecycle does not allow wish lists. Please post wanted items individually.? Occasionally you can lump related things together without creating a list (example: Shoes and socks, shirts and pants, baby clothes, etc).
Lastly on wanted posts;? NO EXPLANATIONS or stories about why the item is needed. ? Only include who it is for or any other story if relevant to describing the item.
?
We have made one exception in the wanted posting rules for our local teachers:
Teachers will be allowed to make a list of up to 5 unrelated items in a single post ?IF the teacher can provide a donation receipt to the donor (We recommend getting one even if you don’t need it).?
- Related items (i.e .Item 1. Paper and pencils, Item 2. Copy paper and printer ink…) count as one item.
- Please make it clear what is related and what is not.? (“Supplies” will not be considered related or as an item; so please don’t over generalize)?
- Teachers, please include the school name, and that a donation receipt is available in your postings.
- We will allow up to 5 of these postings per calendar month per teacher, if they meet the above criteria for donation receipt availability.?
- Note that this is inclusive of any personal wanted postings under the normal wanted posting rules (So; 3 for your class, 2 for you = 5).
- If receipts cannot be provided, then the regular posting rules would apply, (as we cannot prove who is a teacher and who is not; the donation receipts are the proof...).? ?
- Lastly for this exception, please observe the rules about no money or money equivalent requests, and please refrain from asking for new items to be bought specifically to donate.
?
3) KEEP IT ALL IN ONE E-MAIL. Got more than one thing to give away? We recommend keeping it all in one e-mail, and just number the items for clarity. This reduces the overall number of emails we all have to receive and read.
?
4) NO POLITICS, NO SPAM, NO MONEY, NO PERSONAL ATTACKS OR RUDENESS, NO PROSELYTIZING/RELIGION:? Two strikes & you're out, i.e. you will be unsubscribed by the moderators after two inappropriate postings.
?
5) NO TRADING, LOANING. OR BORROWING.? Give it away with no strings attached.
?
6) RESPOND ONLY TO THE PERSON MAKING THE OFFER: This reduces the volume of emails, and is manditory.
?
7) NO OFFERING YOURSELF OR YOUR CHILDREN. Posting oneself or another from the human species is not allowed.
?
8) PETS:? As a community service, finding new homes for pets is allowed:
- OFFERING a pet is allowed at Freemont-Freecycle, but only if done legally & responsibly.
- Requesting a pet or animal is NOT allowed.?
- Note that there are NO wanted posts? for breeding purposes allowed in Freecycle.
?
9) A BRIEF NOTE ON ETIQUETTE:
- "Be nice." Participation in this group is voluntary, and we've got a great little community here.
- When you arrange to pick up an item from another Freecycle member, it is basic good manners to accommodate them as much as possible in terms of scheduling,?
- Be punctual; after all, they are giving you something you want for free, and asking nothing in return except that you show up when you say you will. (Leaving someone hanging is never a nice thing.)
Disclaimer:
?
FREMONT FREECYCLE of CALIFORNIA MEMBERS USE THE LIST AT THEIR OWN RISK. Take reasonable measures to protect your safety and privacy when posting to the list or participating in an exchange. By joining the Fremont Freecycle of California list, you agree to not hold the list owners, moderators nor anyone affiliated with FREMONT FREECYCLE of CALIFORNIA responsible or liable for any circumstance resulting from a Freecycle related exchange or communication.
SAFETY. Be aware!?
- When arranging for pickup of the item being given away it is up to each individual member of the group? to be appropriately aware of the potential risk of having "a stranger" come to your home to pick something up.?
- FREMONT FREECYCLE of CALIFORNIA as an organization assumes NO responsibility for this risk.
- For example, If you are a single woman or person living alone, you may want to say that you'll leave the item on the front porch while you are not home, or arrange for a drop-off downtown, etc.
?10) PICKING UP: For those making the offer; arrange as you like.
- Generally we recommend you wait until you get a handful of responses, or maybe after 24 hours, and then you pick whomever you like!?
- "First respond first gets it" is not always the fast way to unload the item you want gone!
- Arrange pickup with only one person at a time!
- Never tell multiple respondents that "it's on the porch, whoever gets here first gets it."?
- Posts with any form of "come and get it", and a location will be rejected,
- Freecycle does not allow “come and get it” or “first come, first served” as this wastes resources such as fossil fuel and time.?
- Only give your phone number to one person at a time or ask for the recipient's phone #. (Otherwise you'll get swamped with phone calls).
- We DO NOT recommend posting your phone number to thousands of strangers if a post!
For those receiving an offered item, unless the giver tells you otherwise;
- Assume that they would like you to come by as soon as you can to take away the item;
- Same day pickup if possible is almost always appreciated.
- Generally no more than three days after the offer is made is usual (Think of it as The Three-day Rule.)
- If you miss a pickup time, let the person know!? Unless other arrangements are made,? a missed pickup is grounds for going to the next person and giving the item to them!
?Be Safe!
