Lot six has a new home
Hi all Well yesterday the Ratshooter an I picked up Greg Fosmarks lot 6 lathe with all the great accessories it came with. This lathe is the one I did the saddle rebuild on last summer. This lathe is in fantastic condition. Most of the lathe shows no ware and only a few dings on the bed from dropping things. Most of the original japanning is there and for the most part its still nice looking though dirty. There are a few thin and worn areas but that is only from use. The two chucks that came with the lathe are original equipment and it great shape. The steady and the follower rest don't look like they were ever used. Nor does the taper attachment. The lathe in the past has had a cam lock device mounted under the tail stock so it has a cam lock lever that works really good. The original tail stock plate that goes under the bed was with the lathe. We got the original tool post and quite a number of tool holders. The lathe as a full set of 3C collets and most of them are Dalton brand. The hand wheel closer is original and in nice shape. Greg did a great job of taking care of this machine. The bench mount rear motor driven counter shaft is in fact a 1926 to 1930 SB unit that was purchased with the lathe when it was new. This drive is of the silent chain type and does not use a v belt. The motor is of the repulsion induction type that use brushes. Runs dead quiet and very smooth. Very nice shape. All in all there is nothing with the lathe or the drive that shows any more than very light use over the last 77 years. We even managed to squeeze the bench into the truck Greg had the lathe mounted on. Now it was raining like crazy all the way back to Oregon. But as we don't allow rain here as soon as we crossed the interstate bridge between Vancouver and Portland we were in sunshine the rest of the way home."-)))) I did confirm that this lathe has serial number 7014 and is the newest Dalton know of. The original owner purchased this lathe we think in Seattle in 1929. Dennis Turk

New member seeking Dalton Six advice 8
Hi, newest member here. just found site blah blah blah:)I have a Dalton Six B-4. Looking for advice as to what to do with it. I use it all the time it's a nice little machine. I did not think it was as rare as it seems to be, nor did I realize how old it is. It could use spindle bearing work though, when run hard I get some tool chatter. Lets try to describe it based on all the photos in the gallery. First distinguishing item seems to be the apron. Most of what I see in the pix have Dalton cast into the front, NOT mine. Mine seems to have a plain face like Brian Anderson's. Physically I'd say it' probably closer to Pete's (although his does have the cast logo on its apron),but with out that stepped hub thing-a-majig off the left side. I seem to have the same countershaft set-up as Pete's too. Now the questions............. Where is the serial number supposed to be? Are my spindle bearings hopeless as far as repairs?

any other S/N location on a B-4? 2
As asked in my previous post I'm told to find the s/n of my Dalton Six w/30"long bed on the right end (tailstock) of the far bed rail. I also saw evidence of this in one of the picture files. My lathe shows no sign of ever being stamped with anything in that area. Any other place I can look?

Lot 5 S/N 405 found and logged. 6
I've located the serial number on my Dalton Six. Although edstoller tried to help, I couldn't see what I think he sent as a photo. However, the curiousity got the best of me and I broke down the lathe to thoughly clean it up, all the while looking for the s/n. FYI it was stamed into the end surface of the far side bed rail. Thanks for the help, Mike

Where to find other antique machinery sites 2
Anyone have any reccomendations for other old iron sites? I have a Hendey-Norton Universal Miller Early 1900's vintage. Quite an amazing machine for it's age. Horizontal mill with vertical mill attachment. Variable speeds to powerfeed X&Y axis two speed manual z travel with a swiveling table. I'd like to find more about it. Most of the patent dates are from the late 1888-1899 years. Up until I moved it out of the shop this was a working machine.

Belt tension 2
I am starting to put together my B-4. I had to figure out the wiring on the reverse/forward switch which didnt work. It now works.I was wondering how should i keep the tension between the lathe and the drive pulley? Is it common just to slide the two apart to create tension? How tight should the belt be? Thank you in advance for any suggestions. Pete

Dalton restoration parts and questions
Is their anyone on this group who has ...dare I say it..."parts machines". I'm looking for a few bits and pieces to complete my lot 5. 1)Brass plates for thread chart,(need not be a factory item if one of you knows someone who may have reproduced the info onto their own plate) mabye a vintage distributors tag.(to fill the holes drilled into the swing door.) 2)The top of the compound slide (tool mounting base). Mine has been crashed a "couple times" by someone in the last eighty years or so:).It has a screw holding one edge of tool base slot and is missing a big chunk from the opposite sides edge.(in the "dove tail" sliding section) Did Dalton paint the raised lettering on their castings? I've read references to some of the members about it still being there on some of their finds, but have yet to see it reproduced on some of the nice restorations on the site. ......To Dennis; See what your nice pictures you forwarded to me has now caused? Thanks for a wonderful way to pass the winter doldrums, I'm almost finished with my "tune up" on the old girl, Just in time for sprin, when I'll be able to start on the Hendey Norton Universal.

Old lathe 3
I was very surprised to see a group of Dalton owners. Why do I like this lathe so much? I thought I spent too much effort on mine but the ones in the photos are amazing. I have a few small spare parts for anyone, mostly bolts and a few other things. I'm looking forward to discussing my experiences and yours. Malcolm Bryant.

Lubrication
So is there a general feeling as to what we should be feeding the spindle? I'm currently using Mobil Velocite No. 10, but I'm of the feeling I need something a bit heavier as is runs through the babbitt pretty quickly when I'm running... Naturally the bearings are worn after 70+ years, but I'd prefer not to make it worse... If that's the right thing, I'll have to pick up a couple drip oilers so I'm not constantly having to feed the bearings when I should be making chips...

Someone tell me I'm not compleatly screwed... 14
So it looks like the spindle nose is bent on my Lot 3... I had initially though that perhaps it was just the 4 jaw scroll chuck that came with it... Sadly that just ain't the case. A dial indicator running on the flat, tight against the bearing side reads fine, Out near the chuck side I can't get a clean spot to check as I've got threads on the outside, and some rust inside the taper... What I did was to put a tool in the post, loose so it couldn't possibly cut, and set it just inside the taper. Rotating the spindle by hand, I could see a gap change between the tool and the spindle. Somebody tell me I'm missing something obvious... I don't want to end up parting this thing out and then having to find another small lathe to start in on... (though going to something a little more common might be easier...)

B 4 head stock
Hi Ron and Mike OK I have a number of lathes here that are only good for parts. Let me know just what all you need. If you wont a complete head stock or just a casting with the bearing caps. If only the castings are needed then I will dismantle two head stocks and strip the castings glass bead blast them clean and put a coat of primer on them. That way you only have to paint them to match our machine after you get them. I will look and see if I have the shifters for these two head stocks as they should go with them. the holes on the back of the head stock were the shot pin engages was drilled on assembly and I have found them to be quite different from head stock to head stock. One other problem I have found is that as your bearings ware down and you keep filing the split between the two bearing shells to keep a tight spindle it starts riding lower in the casting. This throws the head stock and tail stock aliment off. It can also cause a problem with the end gears. I have had one lathe that the spindle was sitting so low that the end gears rubbed even when in the neutral position. One thing we can do is you send me your head stock with shifter and I will see what I can do to match up replacement head stock castings the best I can. Turk

Just so I know... 2
So I've been operating under the assumption that the tapers on my lathe are Morse... The tailstock takes and holds Morse #2's very nicely, plus the lathe came with the Morse fittings which is where the assumption came from... The thing that is making me wonder a little is when I tried to slide a #3 in the spindle, I got the sense that it wasn't quite right... Now of course that might mean I just need to ream it a bit to clean it up, but thought I'd ask if Dalton was using one of the other tapers before I go and buy a reamer... As a side note to Dennis, I got the plates fitting nicely now. Just had to chase the spindle a hair for whatever reason... Probably a slightly rolled thread I wasn't seeing. Thanks!

old encrusted Dalton for sale 5
I have a thoroughly_exposed_to_the_elements Dalton lathe for sale, circa. 1914. It's well rusted up. The tailstock managed to escape encrustation/rustation, and come to think of it the chuck did too. $75 + shipping from central NJ. If anyone's interested, I could supply further details/pictures, but contact me offlist (not sure if I'm receiving group mails right now). Thanks.
