Re: CP 3005 (ex E&N)

Does the unit have the Beaver with Canadian Pacific spelled out the way the
others do? Or is there no beaver and the Canadian Pacific is put on one line
in the yellow stripe of the unit? Also is the CP on the yellow nose and what
is on the back, also what color is the back of the unit yellow or green? I
presume the new lettering is white if not what color? Tia, Tom.

UP in BC

Jim Johnston

Hi Doug:

Thanks for the clarification on how that UP power slipped by me. After Bill Miller's heads up message I checked and saw they were west of Kamloops. Then by Sat. morning they were already back in Golden.

I suspect that 6007 with the tie gons you saw was actually the Ashcroft wayfreight returning to Kamloops. I think those VKA, VKB, VKH names you hear on the line-ups are the yard jobs that go west of Kamloops to service the pulp mill at Benledi.

Thanks;

Jim Johnston

Re: Other road at Lambton?

Paul;

A couple of years ago, when CN was complaining about the hassle of sending a
job all the way to leaside to transfer cars to and from CP at Leaside, CN
managed to contract the switching for their long haul customer (ADM), at
Streetsville. They had no access to ADM.
They insisted that CP allow them to bring the transfer to West Toronto, and
continue along another 15 miles on CP trackage in order to switch ADM.
(The atmosphere was adversary, to say the least, since at the same time, they
had marshalled their connections and their prices to succesfully force CP out
of the Ford Oakville business for a length of contract term, that would make
impossible, the CP's ability to maintain the infrastructure needed to be a
viable contract option for Ford at the next negotiation.)
CP said no-way. CN then raised legal issues regards the CP Wye at West
Toronto involving crossing the CN Georgetown route. The timing was good
enough for CP's work permits to lapse, and that is why the wye off of the
Mactier sub took an extra year to complete. Obviously CP, being held hostage
by Telliers plan, had to give in ,to most of his demands, and today the CN
job does its work at Lambton, CP switches ADM, switches the couple of places
in back of Leaside that were CN's.
The wye was absolutely essential to CP traffic so they tell me.
It so happens, that I have read your e-mail on a day that I am preparing a
dissenting letter to my International Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers for
their statement of support for the CN/BNSF merger. So if you detect some
negativity aimed at CN, you got it!
Mr. Tellier has now conned my own brotherhood by guaranteeing the safety of
jobs in the CN- bnsf (when in fact those jobs were never in jeopardy) but
none to any other brother in another property who loses his job as a result
of the merger. Wish me luck!

Go to CP leaside around 3 or 4 pm on a friday. Usually the local
switching Lever Bros. on the Don will show up. Talk to the crew as
they are usually parked to confirm their run and then you're off to
the bayview bridge for a good shot. If they don't show, try sat.
Either way you get good trainwatching at leaside.

From Saint John, N.B to McAdam, N.B.
Thank you Mr. Scott. I am living near Florenceville NB, which would have
been part of the North Line (Woodstock Branch) which is now abandoned and
has become a ski doo trail. Many of the original bridges still exist and a
group in Bristol, NB have preserved some passenger equipment. I have been
planning a layout based on this area. I lived for 16 years in Saint John, NB
and passed by the old Lancaster Yard everyday on the way to work. This line
to Maine is now owned by NB Southern. Your information will be invaluable to
me as I build my motive power roster. I have recently taken pictures of the
existing Aroostook NB CPR station which I will post on my website.

Re: Something for B.C. guys to watch for .....

Doug Campbell

Sorry this is a little late but I haven't been at the
computer till tonight...

Took Friday off work to do some well deserved rail
fanning. Checked out the Kamloops yard about 10:00 am
and UP 8111 was 2nd unit behind CP 9675 on a coal
loaded westbound. Photographed this train from the
TCH viewpoint over Kamloops Lake approx 3 miles east
of Savona. Train went into the hole to clear for what
I think was the VKH. CP6007 (SD40-2) with tie gons and
van from the Riverside tie treating plant east of
Ashcroft.
Instructions from RTC to the 9675 crew was to proceed
to Semlin (mi 38.5 Thompson sub) and drop the 8111
with UP 9709 which was already waiting from a previous
drop.
Comments back to RTC were that the 8111 was only half
a unit as it was not putting out all it's power.

The two UP units were then picked up at 16:00 by 764
lead by CP9666.

764 was all BC Rail forest products, which I think is
the regular consist makeup of this train.

Semlin unfortunately is tough to get to as there is
limited road access. I think you can get there from a
road heading out east from Ashcroft but this may be a
private road. You can see the siding from the TCH as
you approach Cache Creek from the East. Unfortunately
the view is about 5 miles away from the siding but it
was intresting as 764 met, I think 409, at Semlin (409
holding the main while 764 pulled the power out of the
back track). A 670 empty potash came in behind 764
after they lifted the UP power and to futher jam
things up, an empty coal pulled up behind the 670
potash.

Semlin siding is 9710' long and it looked as though
the 670 had tucked right up behind 764, yet would
still be over siding, and the empty coal had snugged
up quite close behind the 670 on the main.

764 was cleared first to proceed to Walhachin to meet
401 powered by lone SD9043 9155. The meet was timed
perfectly, or so we thought as RTC had to hold 401 at
Walhachin because the 670 had to come through in order
to get the coal into Semlin siding, and to let the 409
on its way west.

401 resumed west bound after the 670 had cleared the
west siding switch Walhachin.

It was really amazing to watch the 9155 get out of
town easily given that it was the only unit on the
train. Chris D. you would have loved the sound.

Further note the 764 crew was complaining about their
crippled UP power with 8111 only at half power and
apparently the 9709 with a broken fuel gauge. To
quote the crew, "Lets get these things back across the
line before more goes wrong."

Anyway it was great to see this semi-jam unfold and
was
one of the highlights of a very busy day off.

Doug

PS saw one of the new coal sets at Savona on Friday.
LUSX 48-- reporting marks, looks like the Johnstown
Aeroflow cars like the PROCOR sets. Very nice with
the Turquoise green rotary ends. Built date looked
like 02-99.

Stoney photos/video! CP line!

As for the comments on the cover of the RMRT brochure, uhmmm
interesting! Will have to take a look if I am ever up that way, any tips
on hiking into the Stoney Creek Bridge? and how did you cross the
canyon?
I know the mountain is real close in the background! Somewhere's around
there! maybe just around the corner!
These photos look like they are taken down the hill a bit on the cover
compared to those below!
Take a look at these photos of stoney creek for a comparison!

As for asking the rail expert good luck he is not really that up on the
route in my view!
However on the cover shot in the 99 issue there is a great view looking
out of the lower Sprial tunnel looking back at the moutain, was of
course a staged shot to match the orignal N. Morant Steam shot! To get
this shot took a lot of cooperation from CP and take a look at the decal
on the front, much enlarged!
Someone commented to me that the VIA rail shot with the Budd Park car
with steam and an elk standing there was a photoshop job; VIA rep at the
ARM conference says no that was a real shot! Elk wandered in by train!

As for the video of the RMRT trip it is meant as a promotional tool for
tourists that will come and ride the trip once and likely not really
care where they are along the line; if you want a good video of the
route, check out the several companies with cab ride videos, links on my
web page,
and I have about 90% of the trip over much of the CP line Mission to
Basque and Kamloops to Banff on CP plus CN connections from the Rocky
Mountaineer winter trip!

I'm a great admirer of the Rocky Mountaineer and muchose enjoyed my
trip on it. But the video they sell on board is something else for
geographic continuity! Nothing outside quantum physics can explain how
the train can change directions so frequently and appear at random in
so many parts of BC while making its "eastbound" trip under the
continuous narration! :-)

Recently, I picked up the Rocky Mountaineer 2000 tour catalogue.

The cover features train 102 (eastbound Kamloops-Calgary tour
train) crossing Stoney Creek bridge, as photogaphed from the
northeast side.

This is a familiar Nicolas Morant angle which I have scrambled
up to and taken photos myself.

This publicity shot features a snow covered peak where no such
peak exists ! . Oh , the wonders of digital enhancement.

All of a sudden, the Beaver Valley has acquired a new headwall.

In the brochure, you are invited to visit on the web at ;

www.rockymountaineer.com and the web page includes "train talk"
where you can ask train questions of an expert. I plan to ask him
the name of the magnificent peak in the background of the cover
picture on the 2000 tour brochure.

The c liner at ogden along with the H liner are privatly owned and are stored at Ogden. I spoke with a shop worker a few months ago and he told me that the owner of the 2 FM/CLC products occasionally makes use of space in the ogden shops to work on his "full scale models". He does not use CPR employees, but is his own backyard mechanic. The 2 ex BCR C Liner B units are apparenty stored somewhere in Calgary and may be cosmetically restored.

Hey! It's funny you guys should be talking about that Bayview/Bloor
bridge.......... I was just there on friday afternoon, and was thinking that
it would be a spectacular spot for a panoramic shot! Unfortunately, after
waiting around for a couple of hours, I was stood up. The rails are polished
from use, so there's got to be something going by fairly regularly, but
when, and what, I don't know. I would really appreciate an alert, or any
other information of what can be seen, and at what time.
Thanks in advance!

CN now comes into Lambton off the CN Weston Sub. 577 is actually
handling
traffic from CN's former KO10 ( the Leaside Job) out of Mac Yard.
As CN is no longer using the Leaside Spur , no CN/CP interchanges are
made at
Leaside. It is all now done at Lambton.
Where does CN connect with Leaside? Is it via the connceting track down
through the Don Valley and into the TTR?

Never in my life have I seen a train cross that viaduct that crosses the
Bayview/Bloor ramp, the CN Bala Sub and Bayview Avenue near the old
Toronto
Brick works.

I have compiled a "Word For Windows" document which identifies selected CPR
passenger train consists from the 1960's. This compilation is based on the
information provided by Don Scott throug his excellent posts of CPR through
the decades.

This document is not a compilation of all of the Don Scott information, only
the passenger consists of the 1960's.

If anyone would like a copy of this document, contact me off list and I will
send you the file.

I would have liked to do this for the 1950's but unfortunately, Don's 1950's
posts did not identify passenger consists by car name / number.

Re: Color of Lettering on CPR Passenger Cars

----- Original Message -----
From: "Mike Salfi" <msalfi@...>
The C-D-S dry transfers define Gold and Imitation Gold lettering, with the
imitation gold being a yellow color, similar to the yellow on the C-D-S
dry
transfers for the stainless steel cars. Further, the C-D-S instruction
identify the gold as being used pre 1935 and the imitation gold being used
post 1935. Now I can well understand that heavyweight passenger cars that
were lettered in gold prior to 1935 would have lasted into the 1940's and
even possibly the 1950's but what about the lightweight passenger cars
commonly refered to as the "Grove" cars. Was the lettering on these cars
yellow or gold. From the photo's in John Riddell's "Canadian Pacific
Color
Guide ..." it looks like the lettering could be gold.

Or is it that the C-D-S yellow is simply too yellow.
Imitation gold is a pale yellowish-gold colour, which closely resembles
gold, but is slightly brighter. Until recently, C-D-S imitation gold was
basically yellow, which wasn't even close to what imitation gold really is,
but many modellers accepted it. All current printings from C-D-S for
imitation gold are correct, having been matched to actual paint chips. In
the package, the sets looks gold until compared to an actual gold set, so
care should be made in selecting the colour you want. I'm sure there are
lots of the older 'yellow' stock out there in the shops.

Bruce, 4104 is the unit that you saw at High River. Said unit is/was in
Calgary recently as reported and photographed by Luc Lanthier on his

anyone wants it, let me know off list. I caught it in High River as well
