Re: usb cable
it's true, some Nano clones have quality problems especially missing bootloaders or bad soldering, but looking on the price difference, less than 2€ including shipment from china against about 20€ without shipment for an original Nano, I always use the clones and ?order a bunch of them as spares. I never had one which I was not able to make it run. And even if one would be totally broken, just discard and take the next one for 1.70€.

I have also been using Arduino clones for years but the only two I have
ever had problems with, connectivity-wise have been those used on the Raduino
boards.
I have two HFSigs Raduino boards and both have very poor USB sockets.
They are very tight to plug into and also seem shorter than normal so more
of the plug is outside the socket so to speak.
As I said in my previous post, both worked after a bit of extra oomph was
given to get the plug to mate with the socket.

I also agree with you that the extra cost for HFSigs to use genuine devices
would make the project far more expensive.

it is, you can always cut out/desolder the cheap socket, buy a "real" Nano and a
quality socket, and reinstall it. I don't recall anyone having an issue with the
Nano itself or its socket. Also, I remember the genuine Nano was around $25. I
think I would be more disappointed if the BITX40 price jumped $20 than the fact
that a viable clone was being used.

My thoughts exactly.? The other night I got through a small pile up on W9IMS, a special event station, and was so happy with my $59 dollar wonder I was almost ready to sponsor my own dollar per voice QSO contest.

Re: BITX40 Microphone options
Connect your ohmmeter between the Ground and Clone on the plug. ?If the ohmmeter reads zero or very close to it when you press the PTT switch then proceed?ELSE the speaker/mike is not suitable.
You would connect the GROUND?of the TRRS jack to the black wire of ?the MIC connector, connect the brown wire of the MIC connector to the ring on the TRRS jack farthest from the tip, connect the Brown wire of the PTT1 connector to the ring on the TRRS jack closest to the tip, connect the brown wire of the SPK1 connector to the TRRS jack tip. |

Re: BITX QSO Night, Sunday, May 28, 9pm Local Time, 7.277 MHz
Looking forward to the new firmware! I currently have my own custom version that uses the CLK0 BFO and I can't keep up with Allard's new features :) I run my LO at 19MHz and images have been greatly reduced.
The interference I get from?7177 is from US base Spanish speaking hams. Most of them are in the West with good signals. I think 7277 North America and 7177 Europe is a good compromise. |

Re: BITX QSO Night, Sunday, May 28, 9pm Local Time, 7.277 MHz
Good that you are moving to the CLK0 BFO scheme, looking forward to that. ?Once both BFO and VFO are generated from the Si5351, then all errors in operating frequency are proportional to the error in the 25mhz reference oscillator. ?The current calibrate scheme adds an offset to get on frequency within the 40m band, ?the new firmware can instead perform the correction as a multiply using the etherkit library ppm correction factor. ? A calibration performed at 7.3mhz should still be on the money at 7.0mhz. ?And at 30mhz, for that matter. ?Could short across the BFP and calibrate by zero-beating to one of the time standards like WWV.

Unfortunately in North America we are getting blasted by kilowatters on 7175Are these "kilowatters" ham stations? Or are they images from SW broadcasters higher up in the band? Here in Europe, with the BITX40, we can hear a lot of images from SW broadcasters transmitting in the 7200-7300 section. These are usually not heard with standard commercial rigs. I'm not sure if the Americans also suffer from this, but for European BITX40 users even 7175 may still be unusable especially in the evenings. As has been discussed in earlier threads the unwanted images are caused by the LO frequency being on the low side of the IF. Moving the LO frequency from 5 Mhz to 19 MHz, and shifting the BFO frequency a few kHz down (for LSB) eliminates this problem. This has already been done by several experimenters and I'm planning to include this in a future raduino version. The revised sketch will implement a 19MHz LO frequency and generate an adjusted BFO signal from the SI5351. We will need to disable the existing analog BFO and install an extra coax cable to inject the BFO signal from the CLK0 output to the BITX40 board. My own experiments resulted in a clean, image-free 40m band in both LSB and USB mode. Perhaps this modification will help us to find a usable frequency that suits both American as well as European BITX40 users. Work in progress... "stay tuned"... 73 Allard PE1NWL |
