Does "blank" mean no light at all from the display, or that the display lights, but no letters appear?

greetings bitx40 users;
? ? ? ?Unit receives both SSB and CW. Red LED lights up between raduino board and display board however display screen is deat (blank). A friend and I believe the display must be defective.?
Any clues?
