The base casting of the Packard is very different from the std RF or HF.?? When you think about it, the whole vice table is stronger without the curved slot and the angling of the 'fixed' jaw easier. Probably cheaper to do it with curved slot and smaller fixed jaw, but not as rigid or as accurate as the Packard. because the std design often warps across the vice table from the reduction in metal.? This means the work doesn't stay parallel to the pivot and so cuts out-of-square. Here's a design feature for the redesigned RF - jv |

That is the way it's mounted; any other configuration would let the saw cut through the wires right away.

I added shims between the pivot arm and the sawframe casting to get the blade? to change angle between the side (flank) of the blade and the vice table. But I felt it put to much strain on the pivot shaft hole in the RHS of the sawframe casting.? Then I opened up the tongue and groove joint between the bearing bracket and the guide bar and filed the tongue to get all the twist I needed - jv?? |

Hi Rick It will shift the line of the guides in relation to the bandwheels a bit, but not significantly and won't hurt the?blade.? However?you shouldn't need to do this on an internal guide machine.?? What you've done is essentially the trick they used to do on the HF Greenies, that had non-adjustable one piece cast alloy bearing bracket?& guide?bar?units.? The guide bars ran on raised guides machined on the outside of the sawframe?casting. They'd use set screws through one side of the guide bar casting to twist the guide bar like you've accomplished. However your machine will have a tongue and groove joint to enable the bearing bracket to twist.? Yours obviously doesn't have enough clearance between the tongue and its groove.? They are intentionally?a VERY sloppy, fit but?yours is too tight.? Just need to file off the right two corners of the tongue to allow it to turn more in the direction you want to get your blade perpendicular to the vice base. Remember?the top and bottom guides are left and right handed?so you have to file the mirror image corners on the second one you do. ??? I used two small “L” brackets with “stick-on” felt. They
are held in place with 4 dime sized ceramic magnets. They are free to “float” a
little on the magnets so have never jammed up. The stick-on felt is readily
available at Lowes or Home Depot and will just peel off when replacement time
comes.

copper tube from manifold] which are aimed at the blade after it passes by the
locating wheels aft of the cut to blow the chips off the blade. Keeps chips from
accumulating on drive wheels and from getting wedged between the horizontal
guide wheels and blade sides. Especially when the saw is used vertically and/or
cutting plastics. I have a pressure regulator at the manifold, 15# psi is
usually enough. Only down side is a lap full of chips when used vertically, some
cardboard will tone that down. Seb.?

开云体育John, ? As an experiment, I added an 1/8-inch thick strip of metal on one side of the top and bottom blade guide supports. ? This is the top support. On the right side, the bar is in contact with the casting. On the left side, it is jacked up by that strip. The bottom got the same treatment but it is hard to take a picture. ? To my surprise, this was enough to get the flank of the blade to be perpendicular to the saw top. ? I’m a bit concerned about the added stress on the blade. Should I be? ? Thanks, ? Rick ? 开云体育John, ? It took a bit of filing in the “leg” casting (arm to pivot rod), but I was able to slide it over enough to get a decently straight cut in the horizontal position. The cut is cupped less than 0.005-inches. ? On my machine, the pivot rod goes right into the arm casting on the right side. I think the leg is moving relative to the arm and the arm is fixed to the pivot. So when I shift the leg relative to the arm, it is the leg that is moving relative to the rest of the saw. This is important to me because it means I cannot just add shims at the leg to arm interface to adjust out blade twist when the arm is horizontal. I measure 3.3 to 3.4 degrees off of true w.r.t. the saw’s ways. ? I put my adjustable angle bar against my fixed jaw on the ways. Then I set a square on it and against the blade. ?I adjusted the angle so the square was true to the blade’s flank. When I put down a scrap on the angle bar, it cut square. ? Is there a way to tilt the arm (parallel to the pivot rod) so I don’t need the angle bar? I’m at my limits in the blade guides and am not too keen about hacking them up. As I mentioned before, I can see that the more twist I put into the blade, the more it is stressed. ? By the way, in the vertical position with my fence aligned to the flank of the blade, I cut a test strip which was off less than +/- 0.001-inches.
