That is the way it's mounted; any other configuration would let the saw cut through the wires right away.

I have a small wire wheel mounted between the blade guide and the drive pulley.? it's main purpose was knocking chips off the teeth of the blade, and it worked pretty well, but after years there is a groove in the middle of of the wires.? Tooth brushes sound like a great idea, but I wonder how well the bristles would hold up.? I may have to rig up a test fixture and give it a try.
