Setting up at Boulder Model Railroad and Mineral show this weekend in Longmont CO
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý? ?Erik, ? I was very surprised and excited when I saw your latest post about your Alpine Railroad. About 25 years ago I have built this layout to demonstrate and display my Swiss style models at railroad shows. In 2011 I have sold this layout to my friend Heiko Wendler. In 2012 Heiko and his family moved to the States. I'm very glad about my old display layout is still in use and other Z-modelers have fun with it. ? ? ? GREAT layout !
Happy kids (and thanks for the low kid height.
?
Our Z-Bend Track modules are 50¡± so kids cant see without our step-stools or parental lifts.
They¡¯ll be at the TrainShow in Pleasanton (Northern California) this weekend (we¡¯re the middle one, with checker shirt). Layout always changes shape. Always Matt Petach, myself and ¡®public relations¡¯ wife Michele for almost 30 years. Regional Z¡¯deds never show up.?

Setting up my Trans Alpine Bahn this weekend first time since 2018 I¡¯ve had it out. A Zed club sprung up in the last year or two in my absence I¡¯m looking forward to seeing them again. I saw them last year while I was at the show with my sons n scale layout. Hope you all are well keep the topics following and long live the Zed!?

Re: replacing Marklin turnout solenoid, is it possible?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýMarty,If changing to a different switch machine, consider one of the low-profile slow motion geared MTB machines from Model Railroad Control Systems:? I have about 30 of these on my Nn3 sectional layout and a portable module and they are great. They are less than 1¡± deep. They also have built-in auxiliary contacts. Tom K. -- Tom K. |

It¡¯s been a while since I tried it but if you undo the screw in the cover you can lift the cover which has a tab at one end to secure the end away from the screw. That will enable further investigation of the problem. I¡¯m sorry but I can¡¯t remember how the solenoid is secured but I don¡¯t think that it¡¯s a big job to remove it.

Re: replacing Marklin turnout solenoid, is it possible?
Thanks David,
Yes I've tried throwing it with a 9V battery and no go.? Also the coils show as open with a VOM.? The turnout is? installed in a layout and the adjacent track is ballasted, so removal of the whole turnout for replacement would be probably be a chore.?I may see about an under the layout solution to move the points, or just relax and throw it by hand as the location is accessible.?? The layout is nearly complete, just doing some detail scenery and want to add a background, so I should probably post some pics on a new thread.? It's a portable compact layout intended to take to train shows, with the controls in a pull-out drawer and the layout itself on a hinged frame to provide wiring access. Marty |
Re: replacing Marklin turnout solenoid, is it possible?
If the coils look ok it may be a broken wire or it might just be your turnout activation switch or power supply, Have you tried to throw the turnout using a different activation switch and power source?? ?Is it possible to repair it?? Yes anything is possible.? ?Is it worth the time and effort?? You will have to decide that for yourself.? ?Marklin z scale turnouts are not considered to be user serviceable so no one makes or sells replacement parts for them.? If you want to repair it you will have to make your own replacement Parts/Solenoid or take them from a working turnout and install it in the broken turnout.? ?If your going to try it please take plenty of pictures and do a writeup detailing how you did it.? ? I wish you the best of luck

Re: replacing Marklin turnout solenoid, is it possible?
The points move freely and can be switched manually. The core moves in the solenoid coils. But both coils show no continuity using the solder dots under the cover as test points. Coils look ok, not burned out. Turnouts are thrown with a capacitor discharge system to avoid risk of being powered too long.

Re: replacing Marklin turnout solenoid, is it possible?
There is no way that I know, until it is opened. I have not seen an open casing in >25 years so I can't re-visualize.
In many of the scales that use them. no. Trying to diagnose the failure, there is no replacement for the coil or mechanism.
?
If you can not manually move the solenoid , there is damage to the plastic that will seal the deal.

replacing Marklin turnout solenoid, is it possible?
Hello all,
I have a Marklin curved turnout and it looks like the solenoid has gone bad.? Is there any possibility to replace the solenoid or do I need to replace the whole turnout?? As a side issue, is there any source for the small Z (or N) twin-coil solenoids used in turnouts as a spare part for use in animations? Thanks, Marty |

Re: Passenger Car Lighting
Check out High Tech Modellbahnen (HTM). Their web address is?. Achim Grob is easy to deal with and has no ?problems shipping to the US. Just do not be in a hurry, may take a few weeks for items to arrive. He has set ups to do exactly what you are trying to do. HTM is also about the only place to get LED replacement bulbs for the Marklin 8953 bulbs and others. Will warn you the bulbs get kind of spendy but what the heck, WE are Z Scalers: We know all about that. Hope this helps

Have you thought about picking up power via the axles rather than the wheels? It¡¯d reduce the drag especially if you could use a graphite contact such as a modified motor brush. You¡¯d need to ensure that the wheel sets were suitably aligned in order to pickup from both rails. Good luck in developing a solution.

Re: Passenger Car Lighting
?
Since you have DCC:
?
Change out wipers for Phosphor-Bronze .010 wire feed through the bolster, to reduce drag. Wire a SuperCap or LiPo battery, charge current id more than enough, if learn the minimum pre-charge time.
?
Or do the same SuperCap or LiPo battery but charge with a micro-JST connector underneath. (you can get R/C or others, and Amazon) prewired.
