Some Zm still working - great!

Unfortunately there is nobody left who does produce Scale Zm.
Or does someone know someone?

?Erik,

?

I was very surprised and excited when I saw your latest post about your Alpine Railroad. About 25 years ago I have built this layout to demonstrate and display my Swiss style models at railroad shows. In 2011 I have sold this layout to my friend Heiko Wendler. In 2012 Heiko and his family moved to the States. I'm very glad about my old display layout is still in use and other Z-modelers have fun with it.

GREAT layout !
Happy kids (and thanks for the low kid height.
?
Our Z-Bend Track modules are 50¡± so kids cant see without our step-stools or parental lifts.
They¡¯ll be at the TrainShow in Pleasanton (Northern California) this weekend (we¡¯re the middle one, with checker shirt). Layout always changes shape. Always Matt Petach, myself and ¡®public relations¡¯ wife Michele for almost 30 years. Regional Z¡¯deds never show up.?

Setting up my Trans Alpine Bahn this weekend first time since 2018 I¡¯ve had it out. A Zed club sprung up in the last year or two in my absence I¡¯m looking forward to seeing them again. I saw them last year while I was at the show with my sons n scale layout. Hope you all are well keep the topics following and long live the Zed!?

Marty,
If changing to a different switch machine, consider one of the low-profile slow motion geared MTB machines from Model Railroad Control Systems:?
I have about 30 of these on my Nn3 sectional layout and a portable module and they are great. They are less than 1¡± deep. They also have built-in auxiliary contacts.

It¡¯s been a while since I tried it but if you undo the screw in the cover you can lift the cover which has a tab at one end to secure the end away from the screw. That will enable further investigation of the problem. I¡¯m sorry but I can¡¯t remember how the solenoid is secured but I don¡¯t think that it¡¯s a big job to remove it.

Re: replacing Marklin turnout solenoid, is it possible?

Thanks David,

Yes I've tried throwing it with a 9V battery and no go.? Also the coils show as open with a VOM.? The turnout is? installed in a layout and the adjacent track is ballasted, so removal of the whole turnout for replacement would be probably be a chore.?I may see about an under the layout solution to move the points, or just relax and throw it by hand as the location is accessible.??

The layout is nearly complete, just doing some detail scenery and want to add a background, so I should probably post some pics on a new thread.? It's a portable compact layout intended to take to train shows, with the controls in a pull-out drawer and the layout itself on a hinged frame to provide wiring access.

Marty

Re: replacing Marklin turnout solenoid, is it possible?

If the coils look ok it may be a broken wire or it might just be your turnout activation switch or power supply, Have you tried to throw the turnout using a different activation switch and power source?? ?Is it possible to repair it?? Yes anything is possible.? ?Is it worth the time and effort?? You will have to decide that for yourself.? ?Marklin z scale turnouts are not considered to be user serviceable so no one makes or sells replacement parts for them.? If you want to repair it you will have to make your own replacement Parts/Solenoid or take them from a working turnout and install it in the broken turnout.? ?If your going to try it please take plenty of pictures and do a writeup detailing how you did it.? ? I wish you the best of luck

David

Re: replacing Marklin turnout solenoid, is it possible?

The points move freely and can be switched manually. The core moves in the solenoid coils. But both coils show no continuity using the solder dots under the cover as test points. Coils look ok, not burned out. Turnouts are thrown with a capacitor discharge system to avoid risk of being powered too long.

Marty - Is this what you have?

There is no way that I know, until it is opened. I have not seen an open casing in >25 years so I can't re-visualize.
In many of the scales that use them. no. Trying to diagnose the failure, there is no replacement for the coil or mechanism.
?
If you can not manually move the solenoid , there is damage to the plastic that will seal the deal.

replacing Marklin turnout solenoid, is it possible?

Hello all,

I have a Marklin curved turnout and it looks like the solenoid has gone bad.? Is there any possibility to replace the solenoid or do I need to replace the whole turnout??
As a side issue, is there any source for the small Z (or N) twin-coil solenoids used in turnouts as a spare part for use in animations?

Thanks,
Marty

Re: Model Train Price Database was:Vintage Z shops

As they say in Denmark...
Tak for Mi...
This is the very essence of my Model Railroading since 1959.
Economics
Being Cheap, and yet very selective..

I was on a 3? Bottle Route and Hedge Fun-Did business then.
One day was lookin under a woman's hedge, next to the sidewalk...
Good Place for discarded Bottles...
When she casually walked up behind me carrying a Gunny Sack.

"While you are down there, if you put the leaves in this bag: I will pay you 20?"

I was soon showing up to people's front doors with that bag in hand.
"But I get to keep the bottles"
Men would tip me with a Quarter...and say "Good Job."
Women would tend to carefully count pennies; then close the door saying nothing more.
I learned what a Hedge Fund is by 1962...That is where you may not make a lot of money with your primary business...but with a number of other endeavors;(stuffing leaves into a bag)
one may make even more.
PG&E runs this way today.

This man (Guido Pardini) allowed me to wander around his Train Store, sipping a Coke at 6 years old.
Long Before the 14+ Stickers.
I became very careful on how I spent my weekend's work of $2 to $4.

A Box O' Sticks?kit was $2...but I soon learned to make my own sticks.
> I saw the movie Birdman of Alcatraz.

This is made from Shish Kabob Sticks and Toothpicks...just last month with a water reservoir made from a Medicine Bottle.

The tiny bolts and nuts are found on eBay and Amazon.
It began as an 1896 Era Water Tower; I once climbed to its still standing roof in 1960.
Scared...but My Cherokee Grandfather told me ...
We are Sky Walkers !
Don't Believe him...Indians fall off of tall structures too.

> ?I know of three people who recently died, after falling off a simple Ladder.
>>> I didn't fully realize the Safety Features in MY Water Tower of 2023, till it was nearly complete.
it's My Layout...and I don't want to be reminded of how stupid I was in 1960, when I climbed to the top of it.

I wanted to see if there were Three Girls from Petticoat Junction swimming in it.

but I digress....
Between 2012 and 2017...
> I went around Northern California with Cash Money falling out of my shirt Pocket...
buying Other People's Inventories for often less than 10? to the Train Store MSRP + $.
Since even those days...
Several Brick & Mortar Train Stores have closed.

However, Post Pandemic....?
I don't tend to use my stacks of totes with Train Store Stuff in them.

I often mail order INTERNATIONALLY and now own two of my own 3D Printers.
The Hobby is Changing !
Example...I am in endeavor to model San Francisco's Market Street of 2020...where they have essentially banned cars.

With Bicycles ? and Electric Busses over Trolley Tracks.

To begin this model..
I am attempting Magnoral (Netherlands) below my Flex Rail Code 40 (USA) with the use of Sommerfeld (Germany) Steel Poles with a Tomix (Japan) Bus refitted with Chinese Acupuncture Needles.
> Not any of the above....found in Train Stores, at least here in California.

Except the Bus came via eBay from Australia.

The thin material between the rails and above the Magnorail; is coming from a variety of sources, but this shop has the best selection.

I wish you well in your endeavors...but I feel we are about to go through yet another foreclosure/eviction phenomenon, as we did between 2008 and 2011.
Meaning...?
> I won't be going to Craigslist, except for discarded Oak, Walnut and Ash 7 ply cabinet grade woods.
Since 2019,?and even more so into 2023; ?I have become far more selective in my purchases.

Meaning?
YES !
I need such an individual as your self in Denmark to begin such an International Challenge.
Can't think of a better place to base such an?endeavor.
I often use Z, HO, O and even G Scale Components on my N Scale Layouts.
Did you know Lionel O Scale?Operational Bridges are actually to a scale of 1:152 ?
Thank You !
:)) Mark

This is a Z Scale?Cooling Tower of just two years ago.

At 16 inches high it is?half the true scale?size of N Scale.
There are over 30 individual SMDs with four more quick step strobes.

The plan is to put it at the far end of my layout for Photographic Compression.
Except in 2021, It cost me nearly $500 to make just the one with ready made and plug in components from Woodland Scenics.

I am hoping to recreate a second one someday, ?for far less $..
but I am not so apt to think so.
Cause...?
I am also using a variety of Brass Parts..such as brass walkways and brass hand rails.

The one item which will cause me to buy an entire second-hand held layout...even if not for pennies to the Train Store $, are Brass N Scale Trains and Parts.

Re: Passenger Car Lighting

Anthony,?
Thank you for your post.

You have inspired me to once again attempt to model this Train (With Lighting) for the 1896 -1906 Era.

After many failures in N Scale with specifically this scene; since 1977....I may be able to do it next time.
Partially due to the easy access of 100 ?SMD lights via China PAK mail at $17.51.

What I am about to do...was not possible just five short years ago...
Pre-Pandemic.
For one, I didn't have the attitude required.
Much of what I use today in modeling was/is NOT found in Brick & Mortar Train Store Shelves...of yesteryear.
(Many of which have since closed.)

I have become far more serious at times...even a bit Mean.
Example....
I have adopted 21st Century tools...from one simple tweezer to a variety of surgical tweezers.

Along with an all new for me Workbench with Incra 1/4's Channels to hold things in place with both

Sun Natural and LED lights to illuminate my work
====
My next attempt is to create a 4 Poster Stanchions of Code 40 (discarded from failed attempts at hand laid) Rail.
The tiny metal stanchions are replacing failed 4 poster stanchions from Plastic and Toothpicks.

I am not using failed Mini JST Connectors between the cars but instead very thin wiring to resemble two pairs of the 1886 Westinghouse Air Brake Dual Systems between cars.
Meaning ...The Passenger cars will be wired as one train.

Each four post metal stanchion to fit precisely into the corner of the chassis with just enough room for the top shell/roof with windows (perhaps replaced with thin Microscope Glass) to fit over the array.
Yes, I just ordered N Scale 3D printed interior parts for such 19th Century Cars.

The lighting to each side of the Stanchion and down the center to reflect (literally) the lighting of the era 1896-1906.
With the Swinging Oil Lamps (x3), since the Civil War, being augmented with electric lights (x6) above the passenger seating.

I have a wide collection from Other People's Failed and/or Defunct layouts of the?
Bachmann Cars.
Micro Train Civil War era Cars
and?
Athearn/Roundhouse cars & Kits...(pennies to the Train Store MSRP+$)
Meaning ...I am bit less afraid to fail.
... all re-equipped with Z Scale MTL Couplers
but for this next endeavor...
I may try the new MTL couplers which are not meant for switching...(not so easily decoupled).
There may be a bit less Slinky Effect as well, though my trains don't often show that phenomenon.

I use varieties of tiny neodymium magnets from eBay ($19.95 per 500) to test and re-weight not only the individual car but in groups of three or more till the whole train begins to have it's own Center of Gravity, down the center of the train; in conjunction with my #1 Test Steam Locomotive from Japan.

>> I also make my own cheat conductivity end cone devices; ?from Kato Caboose & Tender Parts.

What I am doing today on my dual FUBAR and SNAPFU Layouts resembles little to what I was attempting to do prior to 2018, in my last Basement Train Room:
Freight and Urban Basically Articulated Railway.
Stockton Normally Articulated Passenger, Freight and Urban.

I could not achieve what I am doing today in such an inhospitable basement of a Train Room.
Then after just four years of occupancy 2012-2016); I began to find warped Kato Unitrack.

I could not achieve what I am doing today in such an inhospitable basement of a Train Room
/g/LayoutConstruction/message/1335?p=%2C%2C%2C20%2C0%2C0%2C0%3A%3Acreated%2C0%2CDFW%2C20%2C2%2C0%2C89572139

Prior to 2018, I was a strong Kato Unitrack sort of guy with boxes of Peco, Shinohara, Atlas and Flieschmann Snap Track as well.
Now...
Post Pandemic, where I believed I died three times...I became even more serious.
After 100% success with Code 55, I am failing and learning all over again with Code 40 Rail.

I will be making my 4 poster Lighting Stanchions with such Failed Rail.
Time to Begin Again !
We who are about to live 100 years...Salute You!

Re: Passenger Car Lighting

Check out High Tech Modellbahnen (HTM). Their web address is?. Achim Grob is easy to deal with and has no ?problems shipping to the US. Just do not be in a hurry, may take a few weeks for items to arrive. He has set ups to do exactly what you are trying to do. HTM is also about the only place to get LED replacement bulbs for the Marklin 8953 bulbs and others. Will warn you the bulbs get kind of spendy but what the heck, WE are Z Scalers: We know all about that. Hope this helps

So far I have ONLY tried picking up from the axels and bending the phosphor bronze pickups is tricky because even a tiny bit to snug creates drag on the axels

Re: Passenger Car Lighting

kirksanton

Have you thought about picking up power via the axles rather than the wheels? It¡¯d reduce the drag especially if you could use a graphite contact such as a modified motor brush. You¡¯d need to ensure that the wheel sets were suitably aligned in order to pickup from both rails. Good luck in developing a solution.

Re: Passenger Car Lighting

?
Since you have DCC:
?
Change out wipers for Phosphor-Bronze .010 wire feed through the bolster, to reduce drag. Wire a SuperCap or LiPo battery, charge current id more than enough, if learn the minimum pre-charge time.
?
Or do the same SuperCap or LiPo battery but charge with a micro-JST connector underneath. (you can get R/C or others, and Amazon) prewired.
