Ugh 20
In the medical doldrums! Have a pain in the side, doctor thought I’d pulled a muscle but sent me for chest X-ray. His receptionist just rang, he has the result & wants to see me but not urgent. Can’t get an appointment until Thursday. Will worry until then! Saw the dermatologist this morning & had 3 probable skin cancers removed, one on my face. He pointed out that I have a swollen ankle which I should ask GP about. Sigh Beryl (if you’ve read this far, thanks for letting me vent!)

Do we still send juju?! 17
Daughter & family (husband, 2 daughters, 1 cat, 1 dog & lots of pet birds!) have been evacuated from their house. Fire is catastrophic with closed roads & people sheltering on the beach. Don't know whether their house has/will survive. All so scary Beryl

Top down mitt thumb
What if you knit a slit spanning the thumb from the base of the gusset to the notch where it splits from the hand by going back and forth as Jaya mentioned? Then, after all is done, you could pick stitches up along the slit and shape the thumb gusset using short rows. This way, the added stitches of the thumb should not mess up the striping. jacqui It is not doing the thing we like to do, but liking the thing we have to do, that makes life blessed. -Goethe

Koigu yet again 3
I hope you all had a good Christmas, if you were celebrating. Or a nice quiet day if you weren’t. My cousin from the Bay Area was visiting his daughter in NYC so we had a small get-together at my sister’s. I found 2 more skeins of Koigu while hunting for yarn to make a few class samples and rearranged the colors of the scarf. I think this is the one that I’m going to follow. I also looked long and hard for the skeins of yellow or gold KSH I bought from Jannette but I can’t find them. So these carry along yarns will have to do. The palette is a little cleaner with the two new skeins as they are both the same colorway. One of the others that I had there before was a bit jarring. I think I will use the last one on the end (which is one of the new ones) as a border, if I need it. The pattern only used 9 skeins and I have 10. I am planning icord so may not need a border. I was pondering this the other day when I was wearing my Earth Stripe shawl. I did a single crochet border around it and it looks and feels very nice even after quite a bit of use. So the icord is a go. But I could pick up and knit a garter st border from the icord if I feel the shawl needs a bit more cohesiveness once it is knit. What I’m pondering now is whether to start with the Elann KSH clone and only put the silk in if I run out, or use the silk first. I may do the KSH clone first so as to preserve the silk for weaving if I don’t end up using it. Does 18” wide sound about right? I’m dithering on that also. -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

Lame Question, Seed Stitch Edition 13
I'm happily knitting Purl Soho's Ombre Wrap. It's like buttah. I'm getting close to my first transition to a lighter pink. The one thing that I don't love about this is that there is a definitely line between the color changes (A photo of the yarn pack, knitted in the form of a throw is below.) The color change is a very nit picking issue that I'll be happy to ignore, but wouldn't it be lovely if I could smooth out that line! Should I alternate yarn colors for an inch before moving to the new color? I certainly don't want thicker edges in that area, which may not be a problem since the yarn easily compresses. Opinions, please. TIA, Mary.

Ombre Wrap Seed Stitch Transition 3
Here's a photo of the seed stitch transition zone in the Ombre Wrap. Just a generous inch of seed stitch, alternating colors every row. It won't bee noticed on a galloping horse, so I'm happy with it. That pink is eye searing, but makes me smile. Mary.

Interesting observation 2
I cast on for the Koigu wrap yesterday and I wanted it a bit wider than the pattern. It called for 66 sts and I CO 86. Well, that made all the knots line up in a row! The amount of yarn in one of my diamond modules must be an integral number of 86 st rows. Both were garter st. I ripped and CO 76 sts which puts the knots at various points along the width of the wrap. I wasn't sure if something in between would provide enough variation. -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

Half-zip necklines 9
Actual knitting question for you all. I'm working on AS's Killeany for Hank - back and sleeves done, just starting the front. I'm going to convert the neckline from crew to half-zip with a foldover collar, for the kid who hates tight necks. I'll just allow the center cable to open up somewhere around bottom-of-armhole height and work each side separately from there. I think I will need to cast on a couple of stitches on each side for an edging to sew the zipper to. Question is, how many, and how should I work them for a nice firm edge. Any thoughts? --Therese Thérèse Shere Freelance indexing & digital information design http://www.shere-indexing.com

Being ready early is a good thing 10
We are leaving for India early tomorrow morning. We installed solar panels a couple of months ago but our electrical meter is not up to code so we couldn’t actually get credit for the electricity we are generating. The utility inspector showed up a couple fo weeks ago and told us that we had to re-do our external panel and meter. Today the solar guys came to install a new panel and meter and the utility inepsctor was supposed to come and bless it all around noon. Well, he came and said more work had to be done, it wasn’t safe, etc. Solar guys went off and got parts and have been working on it all afternoon. We are now waiting in a dark cold house for the utility inspector to come and approve the work so the power can be turned on. We’ve been without power since about 10 am. It is now 5:30 pm. l Good thing today was warmer than yesterday or Monda when high temperatures were below zero. At least today’s temps were in above freezing and it was sunny. I have candles lit. We are all packed and the suitcases are in the car. I need to take a shower and pack my travel toiletries. And we need to charge all the devices. Although I can probably do that on my Hansen minispinner battery. Then the chargers need to be packed. I am glad I did all the hard work yesterday and finished everything else this pm while there was sltil light. -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

Shameless plug. ? 4
?Hi everyone! Just wanted to post a shameless plug for my hubby’s book that is now available for pre-order. The release date is February 29th! It will be available in both paperback and E-book form in over 40 countries! (Eventually he wants to offer it in audio format but that’s another barrel of monkeys to figure out.) Visit: Www.DarrylAWoods.com If you sign up for his newsletter, you get two free short stories a month. (And he will never, ever sell your email address to anyone. EVER) He’s had to change the release date a couple of times due to publishing issues. (Aka having to fire the first company and start over with another due to a total lack of professionalism in the quality of their work, timeliness, and correspondence.) Self-publishing is definitely not an easy road, but with determination, it’s faster than trying to get the attention of a traditional publishing company. Right now, he’s contacting bloggers who review books of this genre to see if he can get some reviews up on Amazon and other places prior to the release date. Having some success. One lady wants to do an author interview, so that’s exciting. Thanks for reading. If you’d pass along his website to friends, that would be so helpful! Connie

Koigu shawl is done 11
I took it with me to India which was good and bad. It was good travel knitting as it was just plain garter stitch and I had a lot of travel time on trains, planes, buses and cars on this trip. It was not good travel knitting as it involved multiple balls of yarn and became quite heavy and large by the end. I am pretty pleased with how it turned out. I used the silk on the two ends and then did 2 sections with the pale blue silk/mohair and the center 3 sections with the olive green silk/mohair. I could have probably done one more section with each color and skipped the silk but I think would have been rather dull if I had done that. https://www.ravelry.com/projects/ermabom/the-burrow-wrap -- Jaya http://knitsarina.blogspot.com/

Koigu shawl is done (now tensioning yarn) 11
My tension has gotten oddly looser and looser over time. It’s something I’ve been meaning to ask the Mongers about because socks just don’t wear as well when not knit at a tight gauge and I’m at the point where I’m lucky if I can get 7 stitches per inch using the same yarn (and smaller needles) than I used to be able to 8 spi effortlessly and up to 9 on smaller needles. I’m just not willing to knit regularly with needles smaller than a size 0 so I really can’t keep going down in needle size. Maybe tensioning around my neck will help? I’m game to give it a try. Free book? Anyone?
?Would anyone be interested in a free Kindle version of Darryl’s book in exchange for an honest review on Amazon and/or Goodreads? Reviews are what helps a self-published author get the word out. A synopsis of “The Summoned Ones“ is on his website at www.darrylAwoods.com He also has a free newsletter you can sign up for that goes out every two weeks that includes a short story. Most are about quirky life experiences, but not all. If you’re interested in reading it, lemme know! Connie

Some good news!
?Thank you, everybody! She suspected it was coming, but I think she’s still shocked. Lol He invited DH out for a drink a couple of weeks ago to ask for her hand in marriage. So we knew, but until he finally asked, we were holding our breath and crossing our fingers. ?? Connie

Some good news! ? 21
?My daughter is engaged! After I don’t know how many failed relationships, she’s finally met a good one. Funny thing is, they went to high school together and were just friends. They make each other so happy and he’s very level-headed, hard worker, has common sense, he’s so good with Waylon, and his family loves Katie and Waylon. Progress...... Connie

Tuesday has arrived-change of plans 25
This morning we participated in our first online workout. In our kitchen. When it was over, I sent an email to all the usual f2f participants (the ones I could) to tell them that this is available. We were originally planning to meet at the studio for a face to face class (soles of shoes sanitized to protect the health of the little tumblers who also use that floor ? ) but that was canceled as is the tumbling class. Our governor has asked all non-essential businesses (like gyms, spas, hair places, etc.) to close. State-run liquor stores are closed. Restaurants are drive through/delivery/pick-up only, no eat in. I cannot believe the selfishness of people who will insist on “life as usual” since it’s more about spreading the virus than it is about catching it. Yes, I’m overreacting, and if nothing happens, that was sort of the point, wasn’t it. Several local golf courses announced that they will NOT close. I am NOT sharing this with the group I initially intended. Since I started typing two of the members of that group have announced that they are getting their scheduled manicures today, because they want to. I am shaking my head in disbelief. Both of them are over retirement age. Ann in PA

A Dollop of Wisdom and Request for Good Book Recommendations 13
Elizabeth Zimmermann: Properly practiced, knitting soothes the troubled spirit, and it doesn't hurt the untroubled spirit either. Knit on with confidence and hope through all crises. Now, let us all take a deep breath and forge on into the future; knitting at the ready. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The Pound to Dollar ration is now $1.16 to 1 pound. I ordered Na Craga in Selkie. I know we're heading into summer. I know wool 12 months a great so it works for me. All of you can be relied upon for the best book recommendations, so let fly with some good ones. I'm finishing up a nine book series by Upton Sinclair. One of the books, Dragon's Teeth won the Pulitzer in 1943. The series is about the devolution into WWII. to read all of the titles has been a long road, but it's been a glorious ride. I'll definitely up for a change of pace when I finish this last one. Mary.
