This morning we participated in our first online workout. In our kitchen. When it was over, I sent an email to all the usual f2f participants (the ones I could) to tell them that this is available. We were originally planning to meet at the studio for a face to face class (soles of shoes sanitized to protect the health of the little tumblers who also use that floor ? ) but that was canceled as is the tumbling class. ? Our governor has asked all non-essential businesses (like gyms, spas, hair places, etc.) to close. State-run liquor stores are closed. Restaurants are drive through/delivery/pick-up only, no eat in. I cannot believe the selfishness of people who will insist on “life as usual” since it’s more about spreading the virus than it is about catching it. Yes, I’m overreacting, and if nothing happens, that was sort of the point, wasn’t it. Several local golf courses announced that they will NOT close. ? I am NOT sharing this with the group I initially intended. Since I started typing two of the members of that group have announced that they are getting their scheduled manicures today, because they want to. ? I am shaking my head in disbelief. Both of them are over retirement age. ? Ann in PA ?

My mother says “Boris can’t stop me going out”. I am trying to get her to understand the reasons why it would be good for her survival, even if not very exciting, to accept it. It’s not as though she ever went out much anyway, it’s just kick-back and a reluctance to accept the general awfulness of the situation. Of course protecting others and reducing spread in every possible way are the crucial things. With several health workers in the family, and also younger, at risk individuals, I can see just how important this is going to be. We need to keep the numbers as low as possible…….. ? The online workout is a good idea, it’s important to stay fit as possible while all this goes on around us.? ? Good to hear from you, Ann. ? Jenny ?

It's really tough dealing with recalcitrant elderly parents (and clueless friends and acquaintances). You just have to keep chipping away with more information, maintain your own distance, and - in the case of parents - it might come to taking away the car keys...
Here in the greater Bay Area, 6 counties are under a mandatory shelter-in-place order as of today, all nonessential businesses ordered closed and nonessential gatherings and travel forbidden. You are allowed to shop for necessities and to go outside to walk, hike, run and the like (while maintaining appropriate distance). It affects 6.7 million people. Not my county yet, guessing we'll be on board tomorrow. Daughter Emma and I just made the decision to all-but-quarantine ourselves from each other - that is, me and Eric from her and Hank. We're going to coordinate grocery shopping trips (as infrequent as possible) so one of us can stay outside with Hank so he doesn't need to go in any stores.? Wearing gloves to shop and pump gas. Having to think differently about all kinds of things...
Next up: teach Eric to use WhatsApp so he can videochat with family and friends.

Yes, lots of changes of plans here. I rescheduled my rheumatologist appt to late April. I moved my dental cleaning and the first appt I could get was late June! But I took it because I really don’t think I should be going to medical offices where people are coming and going.
My dad’s crown replacement surgery has been put off on the dentist’s recommendation.
My classes are all on hold. My RHL is therefore stuck at my friend’s house - she borrowed it for the class.?
We just went and stocked up frozen vegetables, eggs, and a few other things so we are set with meals for at least 2 weeks. i expect to run out and buy stuff like cilantro or ginger (which I forgot today) but otherwise we are good.?
I am having a ball spinning and knitting. Those of you on IG or watching friends’ photos on Ravelry will have been seeing some of this. I will be weaving the fabric for my summer hemp top later today. It is a long piece so will take a while. I hope to also wind a warp for a plain weave scarf that I’ll put on the Baby Wolf because the RHL is unavailable.?

Fortunately my dad is on board now. He was running out for small things over the weekend and I told him to buy enough bread for a week and to stay home. I am sure he’ll be going to get bananas later this week, so will have to talk him out of that and buy for him. He thinks his health depends on a banana a day and gets upset when he doesn’t have any.?
We are having to change his meds and do some other stuff for his heart based on a few findings over the winter so we’ll have to see how long he can stay away from the doctors.?

I think recalcitrant seniors applies to my DH - he thinks the “if you’re over 65 stay home” doesn’t apply to him - and he’s 66. He just went out for a walk at the beach with his buddies, over my strenuous objections. ?
My parents only cancelled flying to California last week - after weeks of my pleading. My mother’s plans for self-isolation included going to 3 very large supermarkets - pleas to just go to one, off hours, fell on deaf ears. Mom turns 87 in 3 weeks; dad is 90. My dad is pretty much stuck at home anyway because his back is so bad but my mom could not be convinced to stay put.
Those who are Facebook friends saw DD and my project yesterday - she decided we should make marmalade from our oranges. It feels very good to be passing down the knowledge of how to make and can jam - I’m guessing there aren’t a lot of people who still do this regularly. Then she made some absolutely fabulous biscuits, the better to eat the marmalade.

That’s lucky. Mum became very upset because she could not get English Mustard. And I have just mailed her a package? with oatcakes and mint humbugs which she could not find and seems to believe are essential to my dad’s survival. I felt like saying “if that’s the worst that happens to you in all this, it’s trivial so stop getting worked up about it”. Lovely neighbours including college kids home with nothing much to do have offered to do the shopping for them, but my Dad says “We’re quite capable of walking tt the supermarket and getting a bus back afterwards”. True. But not good from a survival point of view. He was all over London by bus only last Saturday and my mother went through two grocery stores and Marks and Spencer’s clothing department – we’ll see around Sunday how safe that was. ? Best of luck to everyone trying to manage similar situations….. ? Jenny ?

We’re mostly staying home. Walking exercise has been limited to the ‘hood and we keep our distance from the neighbors who are doing likewise. I did drop off a baby gift to a family down the street. Did not go inside. Would have left the package hanging on their doorknob if Trudy hadn’t gotten to the door so quickly. ? Thursday, we’ll make our usual grocery run, though we are skipping the farmers market this week. That makes me sad, but it’s always shoulder-to-shoulder crowded by the stands we patronize. ? Oh, and we’re 70. ? ?

They went from rendezvousing at the beach in 3 cars to meeting at one friend’s house - and that friend travelled to and from Las Vegas last weekend. The idea that you are interacting with everyone someone has interacted with in the past two weeks has not, alas, penetrated his brain at this time.
This may seem like a calm email, but believe me, the conversation before he left was anything but calm. He lives deeply in the river of denial. I have multiple health issues and this virus terrifies me.

Lots of changing plans here as well.? My Dad and his wife are being smart about where they go and when, although he was suggesting that perhaps we come down to see them during Pesach, which I’m not sure is a great idea.? (First he was all for inviting us for Seders, but since I travel with 3 dogs and it is a 3-day holiday in his world this year, that’s too long for them to tolerate all of us in the house, which I understand.)? ? Baird flies in tonight.? Ezra is, as of yesterday afternoon, also coming home.? They gave the kids a lot of lead time – no one who left for spring break can come back, but the people who are there have until March 30 to leave.? He’s taking a couple of days to pack things up even though the college said that students could simply leave their dorm rooms as is and (presumably) pack them up next fall when they return to campus.? I wasn’t crazy about that, so he’ll pack up and label boxes and asked me to make a flight for Friday so he doesn’t feel pressured about time.? After about an hour on hold, I was finally able to get through to Delta last night to apply the credit from the flight he didn’t take on Saturday and they were very helpful. ? Iberia still hasn’t canceled my flight, shockingly, probably because they don’t want to have to issue refunds.? I’ll hold out until tomorrow morning before I apply for a voucher I most likely won’t be able to use.? ? I’m not looking forward to having all 3 kids here doing remote learning and juggling that with them, but we’ll muddle through.? At least we are across the street from a large state park and have a large yard, so the opportunities to be outside and away from people are definitely there.? Baird and Ezra are considering going to work for the Amazon distribution center near us that Baird has worked for before, and I’m on the fence about that. ?Baird thinks it will help him structure his time better so that he is more able to do his remote classes effectively, and certainly that work is important and needs to be done, but I’m not sure if I want them doing it.? The kids’ pediatrician told me he has an unsubstantiated story that they’ve had a case of COVID-19 in that facility, so I’ll have to look into that too, although since the boys are flying through two large airports, they’re certainly going to be exposed anyway.? Which is another reason not to see my Dad. ? The biggest headache, other than logistics has been their father, who is self-quarantining out of fear and told Arielle that she’s not welcome until this is all over, which is awfully harsh to do to a kid. ? Stay safe and well everyone! ? Melisande ?

Strength and juju to you, Laura.
My book club met last night via google hangout. One member is an ob/gyn, another a nurse - and both looked completely exhausted. My nurse friend wouldn’t even talk about it. OB/gyn was still in the “for most people it’s a cold” mode - but they added “except when it’s not.”

Yes, the veterinary staff here are all licensed to work with humans (bizarrely) and the anaesthetists like my C know how do intubate, do blood gasses etc. I expect they will be wanted sooner or later…… ?

It’s been a roller coaster here. Ontario declared a state of emergency today which worked to close whatever wasn’t closing already save grocery stores, pharmacies and beer and liquor (which are in essence provincial entities).?
I’m working at home helping in my small corner of closing parts of the country’s largest university which today involved the shut down of all non urgent research operations and Labs. We’re also moving anyone who can work at home out which is a huge undertaking and technology is only sort of cooperating.
Both Craig and Xander are home and not working which will be challenging over time ?
Emma is at her place in London Ontario. ?Her university is in the same place - classes moving online, changes to finals that start mid April and general upheaval. She lives with four other girls off campus and are hunkering down. There’s only one confirmed case in her city while Toronto is one of the hot spots in Canada. Also, our house is small and I work in the same room as the tv. She’s smart to stay away for now.?
Aside from the constant uncertainty at work and more generally, we’re healthy and secure and I feel like the province and country are doing the right things. My VP boss is the former president of Public Health Ontario which was created after SARS and he is guiding the university through this with calm skill.?
The only downside is I need a haircut and my salon is closed. I’ll just knit another hat.?
