Caution: Buoys Back On The River
2
Yankee Rowers, As some of you probably have noticed, the buoys are now back on the river: There are two "no wake" buoys in their usual spots a little downstream of the marina. There is a "no wake" buoy in the middle of the river just upstream of the rail trail bridge. Also, about 1/3 of a mile or so upstream from the rail trail bridge, there is a red buoy in the river about 30-40 yards from the bank on the Hadley side of the river. It's in line with the third set of docks on the Hadley side upstream from the rail trail bridge. (It's easy not to see it, and it's easy to hit it when you are rowing upstream if you're not looking for it. So, please keep an eye out for it.) Best, Ernie

Yankee Rowing Boathouse Door Problems
4
Yankee Rowers, On and off many of us have been having trouble getting the boathouse door to open, and we've had to enter the four digit code + "Enter" several times to get the door to open. We spoke with Gary, the marina owner, and he suggested this: Enter the four digit code + "Enter" slowly. He said that, if the lights behind the code keys are flashing, then the code is being entered too fast. So, please give that a try. (And please let me know if you are still having trouble getting the door to open.) Thanks very much. -- Ernie

Erg raffle
Hi everyone, hope your rowing season is going well. Just a little reminder that NCR youth are having an erg raffle fundraiser. For $25 per ticket, you have a chance to win an erg shipped directly to you from Concept 2. We are only selling 400 tickets and insider info is that there are many left. The sale ends May 24. If you thank you. if you do not wish to have an erg, you can sell it. Donate it or make it a fancy coat rack. At the very least it’s a great fundraiser for a great team. Thanks. Hope to see you on the water this fall. Sally Sally Linowski President, NCR Board of Directors

Temporary-No access to boathouse
2
Hi, Sounds like access for bath cleaning is iffy? I had the issue when I rowed last week. For me, if not tomorrow, its Friday. Thanks everyone for getting us rolling!! If all the power is good, batteries etc., reset the code on the back of the unit to 1234 as a refresh. But, one has to get inside! J

Door Update & Water Conditions
Hello YRC Friends, Anita and I just heard from Ernie who reported that the boathouse door is now working! Unfortunately, as you may have noticed, the water is high right now, and likely to stay high for a while. There is a fair amount of rain in the forecast for the rest of the week. It may be a while before we can get back to rowing. Once the flow is back down below 20 kcfs we can all safely return to our beautiful river. Please see the links below for details about the weather and the flow. https://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=box&gage=mntm3 https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/ma/northampton Take care, Jaime & Anita YRC Board Co-Presidents Jaime Caron, LICSW (she/her) Clinician / Family Consultant / Permanency Mediator jcaronmsw@... 413.584.1821

Entering the code for the boathouse door (if you don't succeed at first...)
4
On and off the past few days, some of us have been having trouble getting the boathouse door to open/close: Sometimes the entry code is correctly entered, but the door doesn't open/close. If this happens, just try entering the code again (and again if it still doesn't work). So far, that has seemed to work. We're trying to figure it out and fix it so that it works consistently the first time the code is entered, but it may take a while. (We tried putting a new battery in, but the problem remained. There may be some moisture or dust in there that needs to be cleaned out.) Best, Ernie

Temporary—No access to boathouse
Dear YRC, Our temperamental door keypad has now stopped working altogether, and we are waiting for the landlord to fix it. Ernie explained that unfortunately, there isn't a way for club members to access the boathouse without the keypad--there is no longer a way to open the door via the old key-in-the-box set-up we had. We'll have to wait until the keypad is fixed/replaced (or another locking mechanism is in place). We hope that this issue is resolved in a day or two. Thank you for your patience, everyone! Boathouse Opening!
10
Welcome to Spring, Yankee Rowers!! Please join us next Saturday, May 4th 9-11am, for the first social event of the season - the Spring Boathouse Cleanup! We’ll wash the boats, shake out the spider webs, scrub out the bathrooms and get the floors gleaming, and windows sparkling! Catch up with your rowing friends, and maybe meet some new ones! Bagels and coffee will be provided - feel free to bring a snack/beverage to share. If you have a vacuum with dusting attachments, and don’t mind it getting a little dirty, we could use 1 or 2 to expedite the cleaning process. If you’re unable to make it for this date, but would like to contribute your cleaning skills BEFORE May 4th, there is a signup sheet on the Sheets reservation app (at the bottom of the reservations page, see the ‘Boathouse cleanup’ tab next to the Heavyweight boat and Lightweight Boat tabs). There will also be a Hardcopy of the ‘To-Do’ list on the desk next to the logbook. Please initial the task(s) you have completed - on either the sheets page or the paper page. If it’s raining on the 4th, We’ll try for the 5th. Check your e-mail for any last-minute changes. Hope to see y’all soon! Jenn

YRC Open for Rowing
2
Dear all, With temperatures this week rising to the 60s and 70s, and the dip in the river's flow rate over the weekend to 15 kcfs*, we feel confident that conditions are safe for most rowers. Bob will move up the reservation start date to tomorrow, April 29. Happy rowing, everyone! As always—and in particular if you are new to rowing on the Connecticut River during the spring melt—please monitor the flow rate daily. Club policy is that club boats cannot be taken out if the river is running faster than 20 kcfs. Club members with their own boats are, of course, free to row at their own risk! This link to the hydrograph on the Connecticut River at Montague is also on the YRC website. Minutes of YRC annual meeting, 4/17/24
Minutes of YRC annual meeting, 4/17/24 12 members attending via Zoom: Anita Fábos, Jaime Caron, Carol MacColl, Bob Sproull Ernie Alleva, Craig Schiff Moi Wurgaft, Barry Nigrosh, Jenn Ferree, Nancy Diessner, Halley Glier, Jane Kent Those attending voted unanimously to elect officers: President: co-held by Jaime Caron and Anita Fábos Treasurer: Carol MacColl Secretary: Bob Sproull Those attending voted unanimously to elect board members: Ernie Alleva Jaime Caron Nancy Diessner Anita Fábos Jenn Ferree Halley Glier Carol MacColl Craig Schiff Bob Sproull Moi Wurgaft (Benjamin Barnes and Christina Petersen emailed proxy votes in favor of both slates.) All approved the appointment of the equipment committee: Ernie Alleva Craig Schiff Bob suggested that the two should try to recruit a backup/successor. Boathouse cleanup: Jenn Opening/cleaning/social event planned for May 4 9-11 AM; rain date Sunday Jenn will make up a todo list; people can do the work at the event or any other time See https://tinyurl.com/yrcreserve tab named "Cleanup signup" Jenn will bring coffee and bagels Someone should bring a vacuum Barry will bring a large battery-operated shopvac There was discussion of whether we should continue US Rowing membership for the club; our only benefit is a discount on (some) insurance. We need to find out more about our current insurance coverage and alternative insurers. Note that members may choose to join US Rowing (e.g., to row in a US Rowing-sanctioned race) whether or not YRC is a member. Carol has agreed to make a QR code sign to post at the boathouse so rowers can use their cell phones to check the river flow. Moi pointed out that we should expedite a decision about membership and rack fees so that the forms on the web site can be updated, and so that members can pay their fees before the season starts. Since all members of the Board were present at the meeting, we decided to convene a Board meeting: The board meeting was called to order. Carol reported that although we were slightly in the red last year, membership we have now is likely to be stable. Rent is increasing $100/mo. She proposed we increase annual membership and rack fees by $25. This is a modest increase that keeps us stable and avoids tapping into our "rainy day fund." The board voted unanimously in favor of Carol's proposal. Carol will update the forms; Moi will put them on the website; Anita/Jaime will send a message to the members. The board meeting was adjourned. Other business: Clare Doyle (Smith College coach) has raised concerns about the hazards of logs hung up on the bridge supports; several YRC members echoed or amplified concern. It's not clear what organization is responsible for maintenance items such as this, and also the deployment of navigation and "slow wake" buoys. The suggestion was made to send email to our state representative, Lindsay Sabadosa http://lindsaysabadosa.com to call attention to the hazards. Bob will talk to the MA river steward for Connecticut River Conservancy, Nina Gordon-Kirsch, to try to identify responsibility and funding for these items. Thanks to Craig for marking snags during the season. Comments, corrections to Bob Sproull, secy
