Quilted cover for single
Hello, all- I'm sorry that I could not attend the annual meeting, but look forward to seeing you at the BH and on the water. Moi and I jointly own a very nice quilted and rugged cover for a single. We are happy to let anyone use it who may have to store their boat outside this season. See you soon...I hope! Christina

Commenting on our waiver
I have put a collection of waivers on a web site where you can access them. The first in the list is our current waiver. If you're interested in revisiting our waiver, please take a look at these. Let's NOT discuss this on the broad group email list; instead, if you want to participate in a discussion, send me your email address and I'll be in touch about an appropriate forum for discussion. rfsproull@... http://www.sawmillhills.com/waivers/YRC_waiver.pdf http://www.sawmillhills.com/waivers/Cambridge_Boat_Club.pdf http://www.sawmillhills.com/waivers/NCR_2012.pdf http://www.sawmillhills.com/waivers/Riverside_Boat_Club.pdf http://www.sawmillhills.com/waivers/USRowing_Waiver_2020.pdf Thanks Bob

"A Most Beautiful Thing" meet the author 4
From: Carolyn Elkort <celkort@...> Date: Mon, Apr 5, 2021 at 4:24 PM Subject: [allregions] Canton Reads Features Arshay Cooper To: <allregions@...> Hello all, Please share this upcoming virtual program with your patrons! I have also attached a flyer! Thank you! Join us for our virtual Meet the Author event on Thursday, April 15 at 7 pm. Arshay Cooper will be discussing his inspiring memoir A Most Beautiful Thing: The True Story of America's First All-Black High School Rowing Team. Growing up on Chicago’s West Side in the 1990s, raised by a single mother in a one-bedroom apartment, Cooper witnessed violence on the streets every day. His life was forever altered when he and a handful of fellow classmates joined a newly formed rowing team at Manley High School. Together, they rewrote their futures and transformed the sport by becoming the first all-black high school crew team in the country. Moving, mesmerizing, and highly relevant, A Most Beautiful Thing was recently made into a feature-length documentary, narrated by Common and executive produced by Dwyane Wade, Grant Hill, and 9th Wonder. ?tes vous prets? -- Yankee Rowing is open 5
It's time to start the rowing season! Of course, it's still spring in New England, so some cautions are in order: - Club boats may be rowed only when the river flow is below 20,000 cubic feet per second (20 kcfs). Here is the river flow chart we use: https://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=box&gage=mntm3 (The flow scale is on the righthand side of the graph.) Today, the river is right at 20 kcfs, and the Montague forecast (the URL above) suggests it will decline further during the week. - Since the river is still pretty cold, try to row when the air is warm. Note that a typical guideline is that the combined water+air temperature is 100F. - We are observing COVID precautions. I'm sure most of us are vaccinated, but we're still masking and social distancing around the boathouse and dock. Our stance as of the end of last year is recorded here: http://galleryofreaders.org/yankeerowing/covid-19-guidelines/ It's likely that we can relax the sanitizing requirements; stay tuned. Thank you all for compliance last season; I think everyone stayed healthy. Using a club boat will require a reservation, using the same system that was in place at the end of last year. Point your browser to https://tinyurl.com/yrcreserve to find the spreadsheet we use for signups. The first sheet in the file contains instructions. THE INSTRUCTIONS HAVE CHANGED SLIGHTLY SINCE LAST YEAR. The club now has a Fluid midweight double, which can be reserved on the "heavyweight boats" page of the reservation spreadsheet. Take it on a shake-down cruise! We are working on plans to expand the boathouse with more rack space. In the meantime, limited outdoor rack space may be available. Please contact the Equipment Committee if you're interested: Ernie Alleva (elaCS@...) Craig Schiff (zzooey@...) or Anne Teschner (ateschner@...) And a gentle REMINDER: send in your 2021 dues, rack fee (if applicable), and waiver before you row. Forms are on: http://galleryofreaders.org/yankeerowing/membership/ Please let me know if you have any problems, unhappiness, or suggestions for doing better... And please be safe on and off the water. Bob Sproull rfsproull@... http://yankeerowing.org

Are these your oars? 7
Yankee Rowers, There is a pair of Dreher oars in the boathouse--on the bottom oar rack next to the YRC Maas on wheels on the floor in the back of the main room in the boathouse. They don't have a name on them, but there are stickers with the initials "LNP" on the shaft. And the blades are painted with YRC red, white, and blue stripes. If these oars belong to you, please let me know. (I'm trying to figure out who has what oars in the boathouse, what oar spaces are available, etc.) Thanks very much. Best, Ernie

Boathouse Opening!! Spring cleanup 19
Hello Yankee Rowers! With the opening of the boathouse, comes one of our favorite rites of spring… the Spring Boathouse Cleanup! For those of you who are new to the club, the spring cleanup has historically, been a fun, social way of ‘launching’ our season. Covid has changed the rules for us somewhat in the past year, and this year we are going to abide by those changes again, and slightly downplay the social part of the ritual. But the FUN still remains, for our adventuresome souls who seek it! Let’s make the dates for the cleanup begin on Weds. May 12, and continue to the 23rd, to allow for weather and schedules…. Below is a list of ’tasks’ that need to be done. We ask that members volunteer to take on a task, and then, after completing the task, sign off on the “ Master List” that will be by the log book (just initial it/check it off, whatever floats your boat ?). To make the boat-washing more ‘user friendly’, the club boats have been divided up into 4 groups. Each group will require 2 people to volunteer (see - here’s the ’social’ part!) - ideally. Especially group ‘D’ with the Fluid Double. There are some cleaning materials underneath the log book table - feel free to bring your own environmentally friendly cleaners. 1) Wash Boats: Group A: Maas #8 Fluid Single Group B: Maas #13 Peinert #7 Group C: Peinert #6 Peinert #9 Group D: Peinert #12 New Fluid Double (If I missed any boats, Feel free to add them! 2) Clean Men’s Bathroom (sink, toilet, mirror) 3) Clean Women’s Bathroom ( Sink, toilet, mirror, shower ) 4) Take home shower curtains, bath rugs to launder 5) Sweep (to get the crud up) & vacuum floors - excluding bathroom) 6) Sweep, vacuum and mop bathroom floors 7) Clean windows Thank you all for participating! Hope to see you on the water soon!! Jenn Ferree

Assignment of storage for oars and boats (racks)
The Equipment Committee handles requests for assigning storage for oars and boats in the boathouse and on the outdoor rack. If you wish to change an assignment, e.g., swap rack spaces or oar locations, please consult first with other members who are involved, if any, and then the Equipment Committee. PLEASE DO NOT MOVE EQUIPMENT WITHOUT THE CONSENT OF THE EQUIPMENT COMMITTEE. I realize it's tempting to shuffle oars in their slots, but you may frustrate someone whose oars have been moved to an unknown planet. As the requests for storage grow, it is not possible to satisfy everyone's preferred assignments. The Equipment Committee considers your preferences and tries to arrange assignments that ease physical access to your equipment. Seniority is not considered. If you need temporary space (e.g. a few days) for a boat, use a free space on the outdoor rack. If you do so, please inform the Equipment Committee. Equipment Committee: Ernie Alleva elaCS@... Craig Schiff Zzooey@... Anne Teschner ateschner@...

Yankee Rowing: boathouse utility/sheet-rock knife missing
If you used the Yankee Rowing utility/sheet-rock knife (the gray metal knife with a razor-blade edge), please return it to the shelf above the logbook. It's currently missing and not on the shelf where it belongs. In general, if you use club tools or equipment, please return them to their proper place in the boathouse. Thanks very much, Ernie

Musical Oars in the Boathouse
Spaces for oars that belong to club members have been tight recently. Craig has just moved things around so that there are a few additional oar rack spaces available up above the club Maas on wheels on the floor in the back of the boathouse on the left. In order to open up those spaces, he had to move some members' oars onto different racks. So, if you don't see your oars on the rack where they've been stored, please check the racks higher up--they should be there along with your name tag. We're sorry for any confusion or inconvenience related to moving things around. If any members don't have a rack space for their oars and want one, you are welcome to use an open rack space in that area of the boathouse. But, if you put your oars in a space, please be sure to put an index card with your name on it just above the rack, and please be sure not to take someone else's oar space. Most of the racks have two pairs of oars on them, and have oars that belong to more than one member--the name tags should indicate whose oars are on each rack. The Equipment Committee (me, Craig, and Anne) handles requests for assigning storage for oars and boats in the boathouse and on the outdoor rack. If you wish to change an assignment, e.g., swap rack spaces or oar locations, please consult first with other members who are involved, if any, and then the Equipment Committee. Eric and Craig will be building some additional oar racks, so we should have a number of new oar rack spaces available soon. Best, Ernie

Yankee Rowing: Please be extra careful with the outdoor boat slings
Yankee Rowers, Some of the club boat slings outside the boathouse (especially the purple and green ones) are showing strains of regular use and are in need of some repairs. Craig will be repairing them shortly, but in the meantime please be extra careful using and moving them. (He'll also probably be making a new pair for us soon.) Thanks very much. Best, Ernie

Boathouse Slings Repaired, and a New Utility Knife 2
Yankee Rowers, Thanks very much to Craig for repairing several of the boat slings outside the boathouse. When using or moving the slings, please be gentle with them. And, if there are any problems regarding the slings, please let Craig know. Also, Pap has generously donated a new utility/sheet rock knife to the club to replace the one that was recently misplaced. A reminder: If you use any of the club tools, please be sure to put them back where you found them. Please don't leave them on the floor, chairs, in the bathrooms, etc. or on the logbook/logbook table. (Most of the club tools go up on the shelves or the wall up above the logbook.) Thanks very much. Best, Ernie

Yankee Rowing Boathousekeeping Reminder: Please shut off and drain the hose 2
A reminder: Please remember to shut off and drain the boathouse hose after using it. (Today it was left on full force by whomever used it last.) The reason for doing this is that in the hot weather and daytime sun the hose can burst because the water in the hose heats up and expands. (Unfortunately, this happens once or twice a season.) Thanks very much. Best, Ernie
