Icon of YAAC on Raspberry Pi Desktop 11
I'd like to have an icon I can use to launch YAAC, I'd also like to add it to the menu system. For the desktop, I right clicked on the desktop and created YAAC.desktop. Then using sudo I entered; [Desktop Entry] Name=YAAC Comment=Launch YAAC Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/yaac.xpm Exec=/YAAC java -jar YAAC.jar Type=Application Encoding=UTF-8 Terminal=false Categories=Network;HamRadio; Then rebooted: After: Double clicking it only returns: "Invalid desktop entry file.'/home/pi/Desktop/YAAC.desktop'" I've Googled for how to do this (generically, not just for YAAC) but none of the sites makes it any more clear than what I did. Can someone point out where to find this information or help me get it working?

Send Message / Lat-Lon Display at Bottom of Screen 3
Thanks for the recent updates, Andrew. Two questions on the display bar at the bottom of the screen. 1) Is there a way to turn on/off the lat/lon display? 2) Is there a way to turn on/off the send message bar? The reason I ask is that I have a small mobile display and can use the additional real estate. -- Cheers and 73 - Jon N7UV

next beta build#199 of YAAC ("Yet Another APRS Client"), created 2024-Jun-07 downloadable from https://www.ka2ddo.org/ka2ddo/YAAC.html or https://sourceforge.net/p/yetanotheraprsc changes and updates include: 1. prevent spurious EOFExceptions from using buffered input streams. 2. add message event types so user can be informed when their outgoing APRS text messages are acknowledged or rejected by the recipient station. update the sounds plugin to recognize these new event types. 3. a few more minor performance improvements for station with wide-open APRS-IS feeds. 4. experimental (and not yet complete) enhancement to landmark search to use comma-separated search string to indicate reverse hierarchical search. 5. fix logic in ProgressDialog causing default dialog to be too small to see the progress bar on window managers with large title bars. 6. fix broken login in Winlink message sender so that login challenges will be recognized properly, and the multiple lines of a Winlink email message will be sent one at a time, waiting for acknowledgement before proceeding to reduce chance of packet collisions. 7. add logic so that code can test the current state of a SendableMessageWrapper in terms of the progress in sending the message. 8. fix race condition in ADS-B plugin causing failure of the old aircraft track timeout login. 9. fix demo plugin build.xml and pom.xml to properly clean up and build demo plugin distro zip file. 10. fix dynamic objects plugin to more efficiently and accurately match up routes with known OpenStreetMap Ways for roads, trails, and paths.

YAAC won't run on RPi 11
Trying to install YAAC on a Raspberry Pi for my RV, followed website instructions and get the following error: michael@trailer-pi:~/YAAC $ java -jar YAAC.jar Error occurred during initialization of VM Server VM is only supported on ARMv7+ VFP I must have goofed somewhere, not sure where. I installed the required stuff with sudo apt-get install openjdk-11-jre unzip libjssc-java and it looks like everything went OK. I copied the Desktop file from another machine that is working OK, but the program won't launch from the desktop icon. I tried from the command line and get the above error. Researching I found others who had similar issues and was suggested to try sudo apt install default-jdk Which went OK, but then /YAAC $ java -version Error occurred during initialization of VM Server VM is only supported on ARMv7+ VFP After a lot of fooling around, I figured out I was using an old RPi B+ with an ARM6 processor, which normally doesn't run Openjdk 11. However, I found this website with a version for older processors. https://pi4j.com/documentation/java-installation/ It seems to be really slow, but it is finally running. -- 73, Michael WA7SKG "Any day you do not learn one new thing is a wasted day."

WinLink Message Window 5
This document https://www.ka2ddo.org/ka2ddo/YAACdocs/messagemenu.html#WinLink says "The WinLink message window ..." But I can't find the WinLink message window? Where or how do I display such a thing? I have a WinLink account, and yes I have the ability to transmit. My setup is Direwolf/YAAC/MacBook Air/Icom IC-7000. KA2DDO website links missing? 3
I actually noticed this some time back, but forgot to ask about it. The instructions highlighted in yellow suggest that there are links for each of the plugin names. However, at least on my Chrome and Firefox browsers, there's no link. I had to go to sourceforge and find the adsbplugin.jar independently of this page's instruction. Thanks again for creating and maintaining such a nice program. -- Cheers and 73 - Jon N7UV

ADS-B changes (was: Re: [yaac-users] next YAAC build#198 created 2024-May-21) 4
Greetings. The ADS-B timeout parameter is in the port configuration panel for that port type. It's a control that allows you to set a time between 1 to 60 minutes. So go to File->Configure->Expert Mode, go to the Ports tab, select the row for the ADS-B port, and click Edit. Alas, there is a bug in the rtl_adsb program where it may not die when the YAAC port is closed (either by editing the port or exiting YAAC), so you may have to hand-kill it and re-open the port. As for the age times, those are the times since an ADS-B sentence was last successfully heard for a given aircraft. Note that keyword "successfully"; if there is a bit error in a received sentence causing a checksum failure, the sentence will be discarded and not counted as received. Distant aircraft will probably have higher error rates, causing slower updates. Hope this helps. Andrew, KA2DDO author of YAAC From: [email protected] <[email protected]> on behalf of Jon Adams Sent: Wednesday, May 22, 2024 12:22:33 PM Thanks for the update, Andrew, especially for the attention to ADS-B. In searching through the new version, I haven't located the part about "11. in the ADS-B plugin, set the inactive station time interval separately for aircraft, with a default inactive-before-purge time of 5 minutes and a maximum of 60 minutes." Where is that located? I went to View>Aircraft>Filter but it appears to be the standard filter settings for all stations, which I have set to 1 hour. This is in the truck, running a Win 11 box. The truck is parked. I have a/c that are now well over an hour old and (what i think is dead reckoning?) still showing as giant skidmarks %^) Another thing I notice is that updating the screen seems to be at random times (the following is seconds after the top of the minute): 50 55 02 35 58 08 15 20 52 55 17 35 44 56 07 20 28 38 47 Since there are sometimes as little as 3 seconds (52 to 55) and other times as much as 33 seconds (02 to 35) between screen updates, it doesn't seem to be a matter of processor overloading. -- Cheers and 73 - Jon N7UV

next YAAC build#198 created 2024-May-21 2
next beta build#198 of YAAC ("Yet Another APRS Client"), created 2024-May-21 downloadable from https://www.ka2ddo.org/ka2ddo/YAAC.html or https://sourceforge.net/p/yetanotheraprsc changes and updates include: 1. assorted changes to improve performance and reduce JVM heap fragmentation and garbage collection overhead by reducing the number of transient objects created. 2. update Javadocs to indicate in which Provider API version number new functionality was added. 3. ensure that packets originated by the local station are not digipeated or Tx I-gated by the originating station. 4. update the ?YDBG query handler to add an option for listing the plugins in use by the queried station. 5. clean up port beacon name selector so duplicate beacon types don't get registered to a port. 6. fix the Heard Station table view to optionally use the current filter settings to calculate the table contents. 7. fix the line-of-sight window to use smaller units for lines of sight over a short distance. 8. when saving and loading polyline definitions in the Draw layer, actually honor the control that identifies whether the CSV file is in lat,lon order versus lon,lat order, and report an error if the user picked the wrong ordering (identifiable by a latitude exceeding +/- 90 degrees). 9. re-optimize the OSM importers to reduce the likelihood of excessive garbage collection crashes on faster systems by reducing the number of transient objects being created. 10. improve the documentation for timeslottable APRS ports. 11. in the ADS-B plugin, set the inactive station time interval separately for aircraft, with a default inactive-before-purge time of 5 minutes and a maximum of 60 minutes. Also display the distance and direction of the aircraft relative to the YAAC station and the current transponder squawk code. 12. in the AIS decoder plugin, ensure stale vessels are properly purged from the system the same way stale APRS stations are purged. also improve map symbols for some types of marine vessels and navigation aids. 13. in the AREDN plugin, fix issues with AREDN nodes whose names exceed the maximum length of APRS Objects, so that there aren't problems with similarly named AREDN nodes on the map. also fix errors in the calculation of line-of-sight obstructions. 14. correct error in Maven assembly of the distribution ZIP file. 15. add debugging support for sounds plugin playback of recorded .wav files. In addition, the imported version of the 2024-May-12 snapshot of the OpenStreetMap database is now available for download. Enjoy!

YAAC and AIS-Catcher? 13
Is there a way to have YAAC read the NMEA-0183 messages from AIS-Catcher? I see that there is a plugin for Direwolf but the message format is a little different. I also tried the NMEA-0183 TCP plugin and tried to have it read from the external AIS-Catcher TCP source to no eval. AIS-Catcher will send messages via UDP and TCP to YAAC, and YAAC is reading them, but they receive JSON errors. The strings that AIS-Catcher sends look like this: !AIVDM,1,1,,B,33L=LN051HQj3HhRJd7q1W=`0000,0*03 Here is a link to the AIS-Catcher software... https://github.com/jvde-github/AIS-catcher Any help is greatly appreciated... ADS-B on YAAC 3
Greetings Andrew - Thanks for integrating an ADS-B viewer into YAAC. I run an ADS-B receiver in the truck, and especially when I'm out in the middle of nowhere it's nice to be able to ID aircraft that happen by. I was using the browser interface to my ADS-B program running on an RPi on the truck network, but now that I have YAAC going I can watch there as well! YAAC is running on a W11 Pro box in the truck, connected to the same truck network. I've been noticing that a/c icons sometimes rarely move on the map unless I rescale the map or refresh it in some way. For instance, SWA5641 is moving past me at about 20ft and the "Monitored Aircraft" list shows the lat/lon updating once a second or so, but the icon on the map rarely if ever moves, and it always shows a staleness of "0s". That's just one example, there are dozens on the list many moving quickly, but letter to nothing moves on the map. Sometimes, maybe, they update quickly (like if I do a locate). I did a search for ads-b related stuff on this reflector but didn't see anything about tweaking map update rates. Could it be that YAAC is just overwhelmed? I'm seeing over 350 a/c right now, according to the list. -- Cheers and 73 - Jon N7UV

Sound Plugin Stopping 7
After applying the latest update, I am now getting an alert as expected with an incoming message, however, it is not lasting. I participate in the APRS Thursday thing and when I send my report, I get several messages and the alert sounds. The following week, no sounds. I have to restart YAAC to get the sounds to come again with incoming messages. Sometime during the week, they stop working and by the next Thursday I have to restart YAAC to get them back. My APRS runs 24/7 here in the shack. I'm not seeing any other issues and no indication when the sound feature stops working, until I look at the message list and see a message came in and I got no alert. Ideas? -- 73, Michael WA7SKG "Any day you do not learn one new thing is a wasted day."

Monitoring a single port? 6
Hi Everyone, I have a radio port, and an APRSIS port on my YAAC instance. The APRSIS feed drowns out the RF port when viewing raw packets. Is there any way to filter the raw packet view to just seeing packets to/from a single port? Carl, vk1kcm.

Getting GPSD to continually update position (update) 4
Again, thank you for the help Andrew. Using your suggestion i found that the GPS module signs on with some kind of header and then fails to send anymore information to YAAC. While it will stream to a terminal, it does not do so otherwise. It was necessary to purchase a new laptop as one of my older ones died, before installing Ubuntu i'll give it a try with YAAC in Windows 11 and a different GPS puck and see what happens. Thank-you again and this can be closed as the problem is somewhere other than YAAC. 73 all. N6MYA

Getting GPSD to continually update posrition 3
I've tried a search but haven't been successful. Running Ubuntu on a Ryzen 5 laptop. Running Linux Mint on a Pentium. Same issue on both. Attempting to run as a mobile station with either computer, YAAC and a KPC-3+USB in KISS mode, and a U-blox USB chip. Constantly reconfiguring the ports every time i start YAAC, pretty much have accepted that. Problem is when it is all configured and running, the position of my vehicle never updates. Stays in the same spot i was in when computer booted and system stabilized. I'm trying to find the problem point and this is what i have been able to determine; If i run a serial terminal program (GTKterm) with the correct /dev/ttyUSBx port, and at 4800 baud i can see the data change as i move, and stop and stabilize when i stop. I have changed the output of the gps dongle to a faster update speed, no help. I've tried going around GPSD and just running it in YAAC as a serial GPS port, and it shows up when YAAC starts, but still doesn't move. Any ideas would sure help, and many thanks in advance.
