YAAC - Installed on inovato Quadra but no USB to TNC option

Can YAAC talk to USB?

I looked in File -> Configure -> Expert Mode -> Add Port but none of the drop-down options mention USB.

My rig is an ALinco DR-135T MkIII with an internal Argent Data Tracker TNC that's connected via USB.

Thanks

Alinco has a serial port, no?

No.

When you install the Argent Data Tracker the Serial Port is no longer accessible.

YAAC can't communicate with a USB port?

开云体育

That's because USB isn't a type of TNC or remote sensor. You could have your Argent Data Tracker connected through a motherboard COM port (non-USB) if your computer was old enough to have one; the TNC would behave the same regardless of the cable type.

What the YAAC port types specify is what is on the other end of the communications cable, such as a Serial_TNC for a Terminal Network Controller connected through a serial port. Similarly, Serial_GPS specifies a GPS receiver connected through a serial port.

Note that the Linux user account running YAAC will have to be a member of the group owning the serial port device (such as /dev/ttyUSB0), or YAAC will not have permissions to open the port. Typically, this will be the "dialout" group. Type the "groups" command at a shell prompt to see in which groups your account is a member. You can use the "sudo usermod" command to modify your account's supplemental group membership if needed.

Hope this helps.

I'm used to seeing /dev/ttyUSB0, etc. in drop-down menus for port selection.

If I add YAAC as a member of the group owning the 'serial port device' /dev/ttyUSB0 - or whatever it turns out to be,

will /dev/ttyUSB0 be automatically added to the drop-down ports menu?

Thanks.

You still need to tell YAAC what type of equipment you are connecting (a TNC, a GPS receiver, etc.) first, i.e., the YAAC Port Type. Then YAAC will give you a list of physical connection ports available (such as /dev/ttyUSB0) that support that type of device. There are about a dozen different types of devices and network connections you can make in YAAC, and none of them self-identify what they are to YAAC, so you need to tell YAAC what it is.

Just to make sure it's not a YAAC problem, after connecting the USB cable and powering up the Alinco radio, try issuing the Linux shell command:

ls -l /dev/ttyUSB*

Do you actually find any such devices on your Linux system?

I know it's not YAAC at the moment.

I'm communicating with Argent Data to sort out why their device might not be recognized.

Data mode is activated on the Alinco.

I've tried changing cables, connecting and disconnecting the cable, powering the rig off and?

on while everything else was up, and restarting the inovato Quadra.

A couple of more commands to check out:

lsusb (or lsusb -l) will list all USB devices. You can do the same before/after to see what appears.

dmesg will show the log of kernel messages. Most (if not all) USB devices will put a message here when they are inserted. You can remove the device, do dmesg -c to empty the log, insert the device then dmesg to see new messages. Or you can grep the dmesg output to look for clues.

I’m not in front of a PC to give more specific commands, but having the command names should help. You can always Google “lsusb tutorial“ or such.

No /dev/ttyAMA0 device either? Some USB-to-serial chipsets use that device name instead.

You might want to execute the "lsusb" command so see if anything is actually on the USB bus. It might be an unrecognized device vendor code, or the cable between the radio case jack and the TNC board might not be plugged in correctly (or at all). That is why I recommended you power up the radio, in case the TNC's USB circuitry is powered from the radio instead of the USB cable.

Nothing from dmesg.

The only thing new is that plugging in the cable from the radio (into the USB 3.0 port on the inovato Quadra),

causes the hub to be re-recognized.

But only the hub, and the keyboard and mouse plugged into it, are recognized.

Nothing of the Argent Data Tracker device in the Alinco.

Here's an interesting bit of information I just found in the Argent documentation:

The T3-135 board is active only when the radio is placed in digital mode,
indicated by a square wave icon on the display. When the radio is tuned to a
memory channel that has the digital option set, the tracker will power up
automatically. The tracker must be powered up before it can be configured

Maybe this is your problem: the radio isn't in digital mode.

Subject: Re: [yaac-users] YAAC - Installed on inovato Quadra but no USB to TNC option

Nothing from dmesg.

The only thing new is that plugging in the cable from the radio (into
the USB 3.0 port on the inovato Quadra),

causes the hub to be re-recognized.

But only the hub, and the keyboard and mouse plugged into it, are
recognized.

Nothing of the Argent Data Tracker device in the Alinco.

I didn't notice anything new from try to try but will use your string

and try again.

Thanks.

And if you don't see it there, unplug the USB to the radio, do

ls -l /dev

then plug the USB into the radio and turn it on and run the same command
again. Look through the list to see what changed. The new entry will be
what you need use for your port. These days, with all kinds of weird USB
stuff out there, it could show up a number of different ways.

Just to make sure it's not a YAAC problem, after connecting the USB
cable and powering up the Alinco radio, try issuing the Linux shell command:

ls -l /dev/ttyUSB*

Do you actually find any such devices on your Linux system?

They provide a short adapter cable from the mini-USB connector on the
TNC board

to a printer-type 'square' USB-B connector.

I tried bypassing that adapter with a mini-USB to USB cable, to rule-out
an adapter failure.

No joy.

How is the Argent product wired through the radio case?

No.

When you install the Argent Data Tracker the Serial Port is no
longer accessible.

YAAC can't communicate with a USB port?

It's in digital mode.

The radio has the square wave symbol.

Also, it doesn't play the audio in digital mode, you just hear clicks on the speaker.

Well, another alternative is to ignore the USB pigtail coming out of the radio and use the DB9 connector with a USB-to-RS232 adapter instead. If you have the relevant hardware, try that and see if it works.
