Important Information About W1AW/2 Operations To Pass On To Your Club

If anyone is interested in operating from home as W1AW/2 for Volunteers on the Air (VOTA), please read through this information on how to participate.

Hello,
As you may already be aware, the ARRL is conducting a 2023 yearlong
operating event called Volunteers on the Air (VOTA). As part of this
effort, W1AW will be operating portable from all of the states and
territories. New York has 2 activations, one starting Jan 25th and one
starting May 24th These activations will run for 7 days and during that
time stations from NY will get on the air as W1AW/2.
?Matt KB2TBS, Bob KD2QLH and I have volunteered to be coordinators for
the NY state effort and that is why I am reaching out to you. I need
your help to reach out to and get the word out to the members of your club
about this event. NY is one of the first states to activate so we
have not got a lot of time to put this together.
Our coordination team is reaching out to the clubs in your area with the
information that we compiled from the ARRL big club list but you may
know of several other clubs or groups in your area to reach out to in
addition to what is listed at ARRL HQ. I am attaching a document that you can
share that explains what being a W1AW portable operator is all about. This is
a unique opportunity to operate from home as a W1AW portable NY station!
We have a web site that people can use to reserve time slots to operate.
We have tested it and it seems to be working just fine. It is located at
A user requests a login and once that is
provided to them, they can log in and reserve time slots for whatever
band and mode they wish. Also, operators can use this site to see who is
scheduled or where W1AW portable operations are taking place. Of course,
operators are encouraged to self-spot once on the air. There is a great
description and rules written by the Oklahoma section located
at:
Activators will have to be able to export their logs to an “adif”
file and upload it to a consolidator and we will be providing
information on how to do that shortly.
If you would like to contact us you can send an email to
vota@... to reach our entire team. You can also call me at
518-848-9028 any time after 4:00PM
Thanks and have a great day!

Re: Meeting Debrief

Brian,? thanks again for both the interesting presentation and making the zoom meeting work!? Despite the difficulties I felt fully engaged in the meeting.? While I couldn't see the financial report,? I am guessing that we are still carrying a $2-3k surplus.? Is there any reason why the club couldn't fund one or two zoom accounts for club use, for current officers?

Lastly,? I miss spoke regarding the dates of the January VHF contest. The correct dates and times are 1900 UTC Saturday,? January 21 to 0359 UTC Monday,? January 23 2023.? There will be a lot of local activity so get on 6M and 2M next weekend and give some points out to our local VHF contesters! Most of you probably have equipment...

Meeting Zoom Backup Plan

开云体育

So I was doing some setup here at home for our meeting tonite, and I have run into a problem with Zoom.? I won't bother you with the details, but first attempts at resolving it haven't worked.? So there is a good possibility that using Zoom tonite won't be successful.

One possibility is using my free account, but it will only work for 40 minutes.? Trying to record and save the first part and restarting a new meeting and getting the info out would not be fun.? Most other virtual meeting tools have a 60 minute limit, also not great.

I found a completely free one though.? It looks similar to Zoom.? No download is needed on a PC, and no account sign up either.? I will just have to send out a URL which you can click on in a browser.? If we go that route, I will probably send out the info to our mailing list between 6:45 and 7PM EST.

If a smart phone is your device for attending, you can download ahead of time, the app named "Jitsi" at the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.? ?Just in case Zoom doesn't work out for us.

John,

In the last 7 or 8 years, I've mostly worked on WordPress sites. A lot has changed since the Front Page days, and it has gotten better, but more complicated.? Cascading style sheets have replaced all the inline styles that Front Page used to add. ? They will save you a lot of typing in the long run.? When I do straight HTML, I've often used Notepad++ (free).? It is just a text editor, but has some syntax color coding and checking.? It's not a full fledged html editor, but works well and you can immediately view file in a browser.? If you are just doing basic stuff, it's fine.

I've used HtmlKit as well, but I don't think it is free, but maybe a free version.? If there are any WYSIWYG editors, they are probably online based, which may or may not work for you.? I'd Google around a bit.

Happy New Year to all,

We have had a website for the last 20 years or so.? It has taken several forms and been located different places, with different URLs, domain names.? We have a pretty good one, one of the shortest and easiest to remember : xarc.us

The site is WordPress based, meaning it is relatively easy to set up and manage.? It has all the standard, fairly static info about the club.? Home page, calendar, photos, etc.? It also has a Blog, where all types of information can be posted.

blog

1 of 2

?
?bl?g
1
computers?:?a website that contains online personal reflections, comments, and often?, videos, and photographs provided by the writer
also?:?the contents of such a site
2
:?a regular feature appearing as part of an online publication that typically relates to a particular topic and consists of articles and personal commentary by one or more authors
a technology?blog

The last few years it has mostly been used for meeting announcements, other club info.? But we have tended to rely on our email list for most communication.

I occasionally have put a few articles there, links, etc, that I felt I didn't want to bother people with an email for.? The last few months I have put quite a few up there.? I'm not sure if anybody has seen them or not (Steve has!).? They may or may not be of any interest, as they have mostly been personal experiences, but they are ham radio related.? Since we haven't had a regular newsletter, and our club is clearly not growing, even shrinking, the website is probably the best way to interact and communicate things that are maybe not important enough for a group email.

The good news is this is easy to do, and all can participate.? Everyone who has previously created an account here, I can give author privileges.? If you don't you can create an account.? This is obviously for members, but ex-members, non-members that I know and trust can also be added.? If you have some ham radio related articles, posts, news, anything you would like to add, I would encourage you to participate.

I would consider this to be similar to our around the table portion of our club meetings.? New rig, new antenna, great DX contact, recent or upcoming contest, construction project?? But with more detail than we can share as a meeting is winding down.

I will try to put together a video on how to log in and create a post.? It is pretty simple, but a video won't hurt.? Stay tuned and keep checking our website.? If you are interest now, I will start giving authoring privileges to current users.

Let's start using our website to enhance our XARC community.

Brian

If that is the same antenna that was at the square, I can give you some history. It is a commercial antenna for the business band around 156 mhz. We go two of them at the hamfest, one for us and one for SIARC in Canandaigua On the VA hospital tower. A Ham friend?Rich Place WB2JLR provided the brains and the network analyzer to modify them for 2 meter.

?

Jim ( name callsign ??) a model maker reworked the elements. They were lengthened?by cutting the dipoles and welding in a slug of measured?length. I think about 1/2 inch but measure a good dipole. I suspect that is where the break is.? The line length in the harness arms? was also lengthened.

?

They are a good?antenna and ours has to be well over 30 years old.

I am not sure what Siarc has now or even on the air? ?148.20

I'm hearing other repeaters fine here, SWR is fine.? So I don't think problem is my end.? Anyone else who normally can access it, maybe let me know if you can get in or hear it.

So it points to a TX output power issue, antenna or feedline problem.? Unfortunately, probably antenna issue most likely.?? It's been up on the tower more than 6.5 years.

So while it may not be completely down, since I don't hear it at all, I'm guessing coverage is very limited, but your mileage may vary.? I might try to disable it through the second receiver, until I can check the antenna/swr. Though I won't be sure whether it works.? I might get Matt to help me out again.

They are a good?antenna and ours has to be well over 30 years old.

I am not sure what Siarc has now or even on the air? ?148.20

I?hope it helps and happy new year.

It may be an s-unit or two less than it once was (several years ago, can't be sure broken radials is reason), but sounds fine.

At some point, we probably should address the antenna.? Likely the other two will break soon.

Thanks for the reports.? You may be right, Ned.? I was going to do some tests with Matt to see if it was affecting both rcvr and xmtr, but I just figured I'll wait until I get down there and see what I find.? The antenna is definitely compromised with missing two radials, but if the main problem is something like a bad jumper cable to/from duplexer, maybe we can get it fixed and worry about the antenna when it's warmer.

No matter what is wrong, it being used probably isn't doing it any good, SWR protection or not.? So I will deactivate it for the time being.? Hoping I can get a look at it by later this week, or weekend.

Brian, I just caught up on your emails regarding the repeater. I can hear it from my QTH but it much weaker than usual. I did chat briefly with Matt (KD2MGM) on the repeater. He is near the repeater and offered to help in any way he can. Since Matt had no trouble hearing me, I think that the problem is with the transmitter. If it were the antenna, I suspect that he would have trouble hearing me.

Stay tuned.

It appears the 145.29 repeater is down.? I was there briefly last week, and it was working when I left.? This is a busy week, I have family coming in, and not sure what opportunity I will have to get down there.

No idea, could be antenna, power, or repeater itself.? It has a 120V to 13.8V switching supply inside.? The 444.950 machine is up, so unless on different circuits, not likely power problem.? I'll pass along what I find out when I can.
