ARRL RFI Follow-Up
Within 1 day of contacting Steve Anderson, W1EMI, he wrote a letter to the CEO of RG&E asking for assistance in resolving my power line RFI issues. Luckily my efforts to locate the source and contacting RG&E myself have probably helped move this along quickly. The bad news is the problem has become more intermittent, possibly affected by humidity and other wx factors. It hasn't been on full blast for a few days, but at night I notice spikes of noise on the higher bands. It seems that there is some arcing but not enough to be self-sustaining. I'm hoping this isn't something that will have to wait until next winter to be resolved. I have a copy of the letter, it is probably a fairly standard one they send out, explaining the issue, with my name and address as a contact, along with ARRL and W1EMI's contact info. A copy was also sent to the FCC. So it probably will get to the right people and prioritized a bit higher than it has so far. With my 137Mhz yagi, attenuator, ultrasonic dish, and RFI mapper setup, and contacts with W4DD and W1EMI at ARRL, I guess I'm now a power line noise RFI subject matter expert. Probably not an expert, but well versed in the topic. K2AS

Another RFI Update
As I received some new info today about my RFI issues, I thought I would pass it along as some may be interested. As noted previously, I believe I have identified the source of my noise to a RG&E power pole about 1/3 mile from my house. I first contacted RG&E on Jan. 6 via phone and reported the issue, and via certified letter on March 3. On March 3, I also made a formal complaint on the FCC website. Not a word from RG&E since the problem was first reported, now nearing 3 months. Today I received an email from someone at the FCC, who advised me to contact Steve Anderson at the ARRL (she CC'ed him in the email). I was aware of Steve via Jeff W4DD, but had been waiting a bit before contacting him. Steve sent me an email shortly thereafter, and instructed me to fill out a form, for which he sent me a link. The form is quite detailed, and allowed me to describe the problem and its history. It also asked for the utility name and address, along with the CEOs name. He wants me to create an audio file next time it occurs. I did send him a link to the videos I made back in January. The noise problem has become more intermittent since the end of January, but has still been occurring fairly often. I suspect temperature and especially humidity are a factor. So it will be interesting to see if they get involved. I got the impression the FCC has delegated this to the ARRL to handle and will not get involved until the ARRL has been unsuccessful. The FCC person indicated one does not have to be an ARRL member to use this service. -- Brian -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- k2as@... http://xarc.us http://k2as.us https://www.qrz.com/db/K2AS

Meeting at 7PM This Thursday
Hello, Our quarterly meeting is scheduled for 7PM, March 13, at the Webster Rec Center. Zoom may be problematic, not sure if our arrangements to make use of it will still work, I am having issues getting in. If it can be worked out, I will send an update with Zoom link and info before the meeting. Not sure if I can get a presentation together before the meeting, I will try. It could be about Power Line Noise, Ham Clock, or digital voice on a budget. Unless anyone else has something ready . . . Hope to see you then. -- Brian -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- k2as@... http://xarc.us http://k2as.us https://www.qrz.com/db/K2AS

More on RFI Issue at K2AS and DX Contest
I was enjoying operating the ARRL SSB DX Contest this weekend, but when I fired up the rig this morning, 20 meters was completely wiped out by RFI. Luckily, the noise level was lower on 15 and 10 meters, and I was able to make some contacts. This also happened during the CW contest a couple weeks ago. RG&E still has not contacted me, and it has been just about 2 months, so I have drafted a letter and will be sending it via registered mail on Monday. I also filed a complaint with the FCC, which I probably should have done immediately. I did get to test out my ultrasonic detector a bit today. It had been so cold, snowy and windy on the days it was present, that I hadn't been able to try it out. Today was cold and windy, and it started to snow just as I went out, but confirmed the pole that the noise was emanating from. I was not able to pinpoint the faulty hardware, which I guess is sometimes possible. It was definitely at the top of the pole, likely either a lightning arrestor or insulator. It's 8PM and 10 and 15 are dying, and 20 meters is unusable for me, so I will have to try 40 and 80 tonight, though my 80 meter EFHW has been compromised somewhat by this winter's winds. This contest is a little weird, as DX stations can only work USA and Canada, so it tends to be mostly Europe, South America and the Carribean, but 10 meters should be hopping tomorrow AM if you want to work a lot of DX. The exchange is signal report and state for US, and signal report and power for DX stations. Easy exchange! Be radio-active! -- Brian -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- k2as@... http://xarc.us http://k2as.us https://www.qrz.com/db/K2AS

ARRL CW DX Contest
2
I operated the CW DX Contest again this year. I wanted to beat my 175 contacts last year, and just barely did, with 178 and 103 multipliers. Fortunately, the Daytona 500 was rain-delayed, or I wouldn't have been able to have enough time. If I compared my logs from last year to this year, I'd guess most of my contacts were with the same stations I worked last year. Contesting in these big ones is a little weird, with many stations being essentially professional contesters and automating most everything. With N1MM you really don't have to touch your key or paddle. One button or click sends your callsign, another one sends your exchange. But it is still kind of fun, but I will probably just occasionally dabble in contests. And I heard a weak K2OID, from GA? Were you running QRP? -- Brian -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- k2as@... http://xarc.us http://k2as.us https://www.qrz.com/db/K2AS

ARRL DX CW Contest
The contest starts at 7PM. I had 175 contacts last year, let's see if I can beat it. Who else is operating this weekend? Work DX only and exchange signal rpt and state. DX stations send signal rpt and power. 160 - 80 - 40 - 20 -15 -10 meters only. Ends Sunday night at 7PM. 73, Brian K2AS -- Brian -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- k2as@... http://xarc.us http://k2as.us https://www.qrz.com/db/K2AS
