Re: fldigi freezes when trying to decode anything

Chris,

Maybe one more thing to try out.

If the green bar moves, the audio is ok, but as soon as any text should appear, it locks up, is what I read.

So could it be linked to text logging? Please check the settings under config | misc | Rx text capture. Uncheck 'Enable rx text stream'. Not much hope though, fldigi even continues when fldigi.files/text/textout.txt is write protected. There is another one of this kind under File | Text Capture | Log all Rx/Tx text. Uncheck this one for a try.

Finally, have you even consulted the Help | Event Log? Any errors / warnings reported there? If unaccessible when locked up, close FLdigi. An event log is also kept under fldigi.files/status_log.txt - any hints of an issue there?

Good Luck,Chris!

Chris,

One other thing to eliminate a fldigi issue is to rename the fldigi.files directory. Go to C:\Users\<your login name>\fldigi.files directory and rename the fldigi.prefs file to something else like fldigi1.prefs. Then start fldigi and try to decode. If that works then you should be good. If not then back in the same directory rename the fldigi_def.xml file to something else. Now start fldigi and you'll have to do a basic setup and test if it decodes correctly. If so then you'll had to do a full setup. Sometimes the configs get corrupted for some unknown reason.

Re: fldigi freezes when trying to decode anything

Cliff: I totally deleted the C:\Users\<your login name>\fldigi.files directory, then restarted Fldigi and entered all my data again.
Wouldn't that then also remove the fldigi.prefs file, and the fldigi_def.xml file?
?
Jack: This Toughbook has a new SSD with only WSJT-X, Winlink, and Fldigi installed.
All the bloatware (Edge, Onedrive, Skype, etc.) have been disabled, but that is a good suggestion.

I might try removing Fldigi with "remove programs", then make sure fldigi files directory is gone, and then reinstall.
?
This is certainly odd as it runs fine on two other PC's that I own.

Thanks all for the ideas.

Re: fldigi freezes when trying to decode anything

Dear All,

Without a clue as to the true root cause, but just to rule out any interactions with existing software installations, I'd try installing FLdigi from scratch in an empty sandbox (e.g. a free one from sandboxie-plus.com). This usually gives a behavior close to a fresh Windows installation. If it still fails there, I have no more ideas left...

Good luck!

Re: fldigi freezes when trying to decode anything

On the topic of RAM, I have ran FLDIGI for months and months at a time on a Raspberry Pi model 2 with only 1 gb of RAM and 900 mhz processor speed. So, I think those two metrics are not likely crippling FLDIGI.
?
Is Windows 10 native to that machine? I wonder if it's a problem with your operating system eating too many resources. Do any other programs suffer??

I don't think the issue is with the CAT connection. If I use no CAT at all it still freezes the instant it tries to decode something. If I set the squelch level high enough it runs no problem, but of course no decode then.
It's almost like the Toughbook doesn't have the processing power. I even tried taking my Browser channels down to the min of 5, no luck.

Chris

I use FLrig on my CF 19 portable with my IC 705 & CF 31 in my mobile using IC 7100. I also use it with Linux as my CF 19 Dual Boot. I'm wondering if it's a driver issue not?finding the proper radio settings. I use mine on Win 10 with JS8call, FT 8 and Pat Winlink as well as Linux Mint. The RAM is soldered on to the board.? I don't see your radio in the email message you posted.

I am working on it. It will take a few days...
Fldigi and also WSJT-X worked perfectly for me on Windows 11, but I switched back to 10 because of other reason (network authentication issues).

Hello David,
?
I am also using an FT-991A with Windows 10, and works nicely. I have these settings:
?
I am using RigCAT as it is much better for Fldigi than HamLib. It can read the power, SWR, etc from the radio and you can select the filter bandwidths and so on...
The name of COM port and the Baud rate most probably different in your case, as the baud rate is depending on the radio setting.
?
I have these audio settings:
?
If you don't have any special settings on the 991A, then it should be in Data USB (or maybe in Data LSB) mode, otherwise it will not accept external audio signal.
?
?
?
It is very important to switch off all enhancements!
?
?
?
?
Finally, there is a very tricky setting in Fldigi for 991A. The red marked checkbox should be active, otherwise it will not work.
?
I hope it helps! I have a very detailed tutorial with screenshots for Fldigi and with all settings of FT-991A.
I made it for a Hungarian HAM, so if you interested, then I can translate it...

Re: Yaesu 991A the tune button doesn't work

Technically that¡¯s a real question, yes. The main point is that I have to reboot the machine when I switch from Ham Radio Deluxe to FLDIGI or Vice versa. I have downloaded VARA HF. I have also downloaded Digipan and WinWarbler. I have tried those out. Sometimes the work, sometimes they don¡¯t. I would have shut them down when I rebooted. So a final yes. I did notice that the computer went into a power saving mode. I thought that I had shut off that function.

No idea why but it seems like something struggles to take full control of the CAT control function.
Best of luck.
