Re: Starting help and question...
开云体育Electrical connections can be protected with di-electric silicone ignition grease. It protects by insulating bare metal from moisture and air. A thin coat can be applied to the separate components, then assembled -or- just applied after assembly. An acid brush is an easy way to apply. I use it on old and new vehicles. Battery posts, frame grounds, and lamp bases if you have a problem with moisture getting inside of lenses. As others stated, you have to start with surfaces clean of paint and corrosion. Good luck with your project! – Joe ? |
Re: Starting help and question…..
开云体育And also can I get a checklist of areas to check for paint/corrosion removal for grounds? I know of braided wire on battery tray/engine and battery cable corrosion……but I’d bet there are several others I may have missed…..thanks, MikeOn May 18, 2021, at 9:40 PM, Ted McCann <mccannrealty@...> wrote:

Re: Starting help and question…..
Hi Phillip, Just a question regarding your suggestion to clean the metal for best electrical contact.? I am getting the lights working on my truck and have a question. For example, if you are removing paint from where say the light bracket attaches to the truck bed. Isn't the spot where the burnished pieces meet going to be more?susceptible?to corrosion? Is there a way to insure good electrical contact while guarding against corrosion? Thanks Ted On Tue, May 18, 2021 at 7:49 PM Philip Cusimano <MadDogFife@...> wrote: Make sure all metal-to-metal contact areas are clean! Any paint or primer will impede electrical flow! Good luck! -Dr.Phil |

Re: Starting help and question…..
The last time l had a no start like you describe it was the timing. Try turning the distributor a little bit. The valves are in the block. How are they going to hit the pistons? |
Re: Starting help and question…..
开云体育Thanks for all your responses!!!! I’ll start by charging battery for a couple hours then removing plugs to hand crank. Starter should be good…..after rebuild he started the engine(I believe w/quick 12 volt jump) via my starter…….will update on any progress. Thanks again…..this message board has REALLY benefitted me thru these years of restoration……. Even though our numbers of posts have slowed, it’s great to know help is a touchscreen away……thanks again,MikeOn May 17, 2021, at 10:04 AM, jay <bitrootvz@...> wrote:

Re: Starting help and question…..
Have you checked the battery with a load tester?? You could show 6 volts, but still have a low charge, if you don't have a load tester try charging it for a couple of hours and then try.? Also as others have said, pull the spark plugs and try to turn over the engine by hand, I have had cases where the mains were too tight when torqued to spec.? You could also remove the starter and test it out of the vehicle to check if it works correctly.?

Re: Starting help and question…..
开云体育You can jump it with a 12v battery, won’t hurt anything. The only gauge that is 6v should be the fuel gauge. However a good 6v system should spin that 134 over with no problem, you have a bad battery, starter or poor connections.
I swapped out my lights and coil and ran my 6v starter on 12v for years with no issues.

Re: Starting help and question…..
Be careful you have the timing correct because you may have valves hitting pistons. With the plugs out you should be able to turn it over with a socket and ratchet. Starting help and question…..
46’ CJ2A, 6 volt……. Trying to start for first time(after engine rebuild) & am not making much progress. Starter, generator, 0/1 electrical cables, cleaned up battery terminals and grounds, battery registers 6+ volts. Tried to fire it up today and just didn’t seem to have the oommmpppphhhh to fully turn over. Like a low battery but battery less than 1yr old and registering a little over 6amps. I’m trying to find a way to NOT fry my 6volt gauges and system yet give it a little more turnover juice…. HELP!!!!! Thanks,Mike

Clearly, you've had some bad luck with your transmission. Yes, I have a T90 and D18 T-case you could have but live much too far away during this pandemic to be of use. Permit me to give a little assurance... there are good people, even competent mechanics out there, but they are very old, and far between now. Herm-the-Overdrive- Guy does good work but he's in Washington State, a thousand miles from LA. I've found that I can do much of the mechanical work myself, but it takes a very long time - do the pictures indicate you have a useable transmission now? I'm sure you know that we are approaching the end of an era with these old vehicles - there's plenty of problems with the new designs of course (my son is trying to source a replacement battery for his Leaf... Nissan doesn't want to sell replacements and so one has to "scrounge"). All the best of luck. Pavel up north. |
