My problem is with worn out (crap) tools that should have been discarded 50 years ago… I can’t bring myself to throw anything away. ?There’s a psychiatric term for this mental illness…

When the younger generation gets control of the label maker, some mischief may occur, like these labels at a friend's shop.?? The dad is a retired Volvo mechanic; the son a chief engineer on container vessels.??

We all probably have some "crap files".. or "futility knives"

Rod,

The function is there, still.? On the main screen, after logging in, messages will display- if not, click on messages on the left hand side of the screen.?? On the upper right corner is a search option, with a box to enter what you want to search for.?? Sorry, been away from email for a few days.

Re: Steering gear box

Todd,

I like the way your drag link is parallel to the tie rod (no drop Pitman arm).? Mine isn't quite that parallel but close.? I used a Pitman arm from a Chevy Astrovan.? Also it looks like you installed a "support rod" that steadies the low point on the Saginaw box against the opposing frame rail... very good to distribute forces.? In my case, I simply made up gussets to support the box against the winch cross member assembly (also makes for greater strength).
One negative I read long ago about using a power Saginaw box vs the manual version is for serious off-roading.? The report said that if you do off roading on really hard surfaces (Moab?) the power steering is strong enough to distort the front of the Willys chassis.? Not a problem for our Willys that probably will always have gentle use.
Cheers, PUN.

I changed from gm manual to Saginaw power using previous mention adapter. Used aftermarket tilt column can of ham pump all for under 500dollars. Installed on 48 Willys pickup.? I still have manual gear box if interested.?

When I rebuilt my wagon, I installed a power steering Saginaw box.? I had to use Heim joint tie rod ends and now it works like a champ!? I went from 20 point turns to a good U turn. It is beefy but it works.? WFI in Auburn, CA sells the tie rods.? I know this isn’t for the purist but as my wagon was originally to be flattened, this works.? I know the Herm Tilford had an excellent steering combination for the wagons.

?

On a side note, has anyone modified their dash amp meter for a voltage meter?

Thanks!

Here's a link to my Willys wagon steering shenanigans - it was a spot of bother (as the Brits say):

Re: Steering gear box

This is a reply to the #192293 comment on the "Sealant" thread, there jeepeers85213 mentioned he used a manual Saginaw box:

As I understand it, the mounting bolt pattern for the Saginaw manual and power steering boxes is the same so you change from one type to the other if wanted.? When sourcing a Sag box, of course, it's advisable to get one with a slower ratio - the 3 bolt Cherokee box I got gave about 4-1/4 turns lock to lock - similar to the original Ross unit in our wagon.
PUN.

Re: Sealants

My 54' wagon got a manual saginaw from a 67' impala, the kit was from 4 Wheelers supply in Phx. It had the bolt on plate to be welded to the frame, two spicer u-joints, and the tie rod kit. Had to find my own steering box, and had the steering shaft turned down to fit the spicer joints. Was convinced to up-grade after the bell crank linkage failed while moving off road..

Vent's Center Bar on Willy Wagon Driver Door

Good gosh... piece by piece by piece...

My body guy told me the wing vent's metal center bar on the driver side is rusted out badly.

?
It looks by the diagram I found it's a whole triangular unit (?) Is that correct?

Any ideas a place I might find one?

AWORKOFMARC,

I gave up on the Ross steering in our '65 wagon - after all, it is a pre WWII design.? A Saginaw power steering upgrade was the answer in our case as the family females found parallel parking on pavement an ordeal.? I sourced a box, column and pump from a Cherokee.? The cost was $1000 by the time brackets were fabricated for the box and the power steering pump.? We had to use a Cherokee steering column because alteration of the stock column is not allowed in our jurisdiction. Money well wasted in our case.
Cheers, Pavel up north.

Hi.

Im wondering... 100% clueless on a 57 Wagon's steering but I know Ive never liked mine... it steers like a tractor. LOSE.

I tried having my mechanic install an after market adapter called "Tightsteer" or something I bought at Walcks but it didnt fit... even tho it was supposedly the right part.

Does a wagon use a Pitman Arm? I see those for sale at Kaisers.

Or should I try and find a whole steering gear box insides from a Willys salvage yard?
